How to study for Math AI
Don't Waste Time Memorizing Formulas – While it’s important to be familiar with the formulas, there's no need to waste time memorizing every single one. In the IB Math AI exam, you'll be provided with a formula booklet, so focus on understanding how and when to use the formulas instead.
Solve a lot of questions – Math is all about applying what you've learned to different problems, so the more questions you solve, the better you'll get at it. It’s not enough to just understand the concepts; you need to see how they work in different situations. Hence, when preparing for assessments solve question after question until you master each concept and are able to approach it from various perspectives. Work on time management – Time management is crucial during the exam. Practice solving problems within a time limit to ensure you’re able to complete the exam on time without rushing through questions.
Revisit your class notes – If you’re studying for an in-class test you should focus on the topics covered in class. Teachers often place more emphasis on certain topics during lessons, so it’s likely those areas will carry more weight in the test. Reviewing your notes will help you focus on what’s most important and ensure you're prepared for the material your teacher considers crucial.
Work on weak areas – Use your time wisely by focusing on the topics you find most challenging. Strengthening your weak areas will have a greater impact on your overall understanding than spending too much time on what you already know.
Break down complex problems – When practicing past paper questions, tackle high-mark questions by breaking them down. These questions often involve multiple concepts, sometimes even from different units. Hence, it is best to first identify the key concepts and laws you must apply and then tackle the question step by step. You may even find it useful to write down a plan on how you will tackle a question, this way, if you get stuck while solving it, you can quickly refer back to your plan and regain focus.
Check for recurring errors – Review your past assignments or tests to spot common mistakes, such as forgetting the constant when integrating, and make a note to avoid them during the exam.
