IB Math AI Assessment + Exam

Are you thinking about choosing IB Math AI as your math course for the IB program but unsure if it’s a good fit for you? If you’re considering different math options and wondering about the challenges IB Math AI might pose, this guide will provide you with some insights so that you can make a well-informed choice.
How Hard is IB Math AI?

Difficulty
If we take a look at IB statistics, Math AI seems to be the easier of the two math options, with 9.0% of SL and 14.6% of HL students obtaining a 7 according to data from the May 2024 exam session. However, these statistics do not mean that Math AI is easy or should not be taken as seriously as Math AA. Math AI concepts are more focused on statistics, probability, and other "soft" math skills compared to Math AA which focuses on harder concepts such as calculus and trigonometry. However, Math AI topics are covered in the same level of depth and hence should not be taken lightly as they can be quite challenging, especially for students whose strength is not maths. Math AI is a moderately challenging course and is generally considered easier than its Math AA counterpart at both the Higher Level (HL) and the Standard Level (SL) in the IB curriculum. The course is strongly focused on the applications of mathematics in the real world, requiring students to understand fundamental mathematical principles and apply them in relevant settings. Math AI emphasizes statistics, probability, modelling, and the use of technology such as spreadsheets and graphing calculators to analyze data and solve practical problems. Students develop their quantitative reasoning skills rather than focusing on pure math. Math AI will not require students to understand any proofs or theorems, as that is usually done as part of Math AA. For students taking Math AI at HL, the complexity increases as topics are explored in more depth. As a result, Math AI HL is often considered moderately challenging while Math AI SL is considered the easiest IB Math subject.
What are some of the challenges of IB Math AI?

Students must apply mathematical concepts to real-world scenarios, requiring strong interpretation skills rather than just procedural knowledge.

The course involves working with large datasets, requiring proficiency in statistical techniques, probability distributions, and regression analysis.

Students must create and interpret mathematical models such as exponential growth, financial modelling, and population dynamics which can be conceptually challenging.

Math AI requires frequent use of graphing calculators, spreadsheets, and statistical software, making technological proficiency essential.

Students are required to analyze and draw conclusions from graphs, trends, and statistical tests which requires critical thinking and pattern recognition skills.

CAROUSEL

Who should consider doing Math AI?
Math AI is a great choice for students interested in fields requiring the real-world application of math such as business, social sciences, humanities and statistics. For students planning to pursue more math-heavy fields such as engineering, physics, computer science, etc. Math AA might be a better fit as it is often a requirement for many STEM fields. For a detailed comparison of Math AA and AI, check out this post. When choosing your Math course, also be mindful of the entry requirements for each university/college you are applying to. Many universities and courses only accept students with Math AA as it is considered rigorous and prepares students for university-level math. However, many courses also accept Math AI on a case-by-case basis so it is important to check the requirements carefully before choosing which IB Math to specialize in. If you're considering taking Math AI HL, remember that there is a significant difference between SL and HL. HL topics are covered in more depth, and although Math AI HL is less rigorous than Math AA HL, you should not mistake it as being "easy". If you are not quite interested in mathematics or your university course does not require it, it might be better to take Math AI SL instead.
Tips for succeeding in Math AI

Practice regularly – Consistent practice is essential for mastering IB Math AI. Use IB question banks, past papers, and textbook problems to reinforce your understanding and improve problem-solving skills.

Do not fall behind – Don’t wait if you’re struggling with a topic. Speak to your teacher whenever an issue arises. Concepts in Maths AI build on each other, so misunderstandings can create problems down the line.

Master your GDC – Learn how to use functions like regression, probability distributions, and graphing tools efficiently, as technology is a key component of Math AI.

Break down the questions – many Math AI problems are multi-step and can feel overwhelming at first glance. By doing past papers, you will become well-versed in the types of questions that could potentially be asked on exams. This is because questions often follow a similar format across exam sessions, with slight variations. If you practice enough past papers, you will easily be able to tackle the final exams and quickly solve the problems.
Practice under exam conditions
Make sure to practice past papers under exam conditions. You should set a timer for the duration of the exam and see if you can complete the past papers within that given timeframe. Practicing past papers allows you to identify question types that you are good at answering as well as those that you struggle with. This will give you a detailed breakdown of areas in which you need to spend more time studying. Aim to do past papers dating back at least 5 years from the exam session you are planning to sit for. Older papers can also be done, however, you should be mindful that the IB changes their syllabi regularly, so older papers may not be representative of the current testable content. Nevertheless, you can still do older papers as extra practice. Ensure you show all your work clearly and write down intermediate steps for full method marks. This can even help you get partial marks in case your final answer is wrong.
Learn the IB command terms
Pay attention to words like "calculate," "construct," "deduce," and "draw" in exam questions. Each type of command term has a different meaning and requires you to answer exam questions in a certain way. A full list of IB Math command terms can be found here.

CAROUSEL

Craft a strong IA
The IA is worth 20% of your overall grade in IB Math AI, which is a significant amount. Conducting a Math IA can be challenging as you need to understand and discuss the math behind your chosen topic, which is quite different from other IB subjects where you may be asked to write essays or conduct experiments. You should choose a topic that deeply interests you, and structure your Math IA as discussed in this post. Ask your teacher for feedback on how to improve your IA. For further guidance, check out our collection of Math AI IAs, or submit your IA for an in-depth review by our team here.
Practice, don't memorize
Math is a unique subject because students need to understand the concepts to do well. You cannot simply memorize formulae or equations, as everything depends on the exact question you are being asked. Instead, to succeed in Math AI, you should make sure you thoroughly understand the concepts so you can apply them effectively during exams. With practice, you will be able to recognize patterns quickly and know which strategy is required to answer a certain question.
Master your GDC
Math AI students are allowed to use their GDCs on all three exam papers. As such, it is important to be familiar with how to use your GDC so that you can make full use of it during your exam. You should learn how to use all the key functions on your GDC such as regression, matrices, and statistical analysis.
Study consistently
IB Math AI requires constant reviewing of the material to ensure you remember how to tackle various aspects of math. Ensuring consistent study habits is crucial to achieving a 7. Create a dedicated study schedule to do practice questions at a fixed date and time weekly. Ensure your study space is free from any distractions and allows you to focus thoroughly on the material. We hope this post helped you identify how to get a 7 in IB Math AI. How to get a 7 in IB Math AI

Paper 3 is the final exam for IB Mathematics Applications and Interpretation (AI) HL students, marking the last challenge in your IB Math AI assessment. In this post, we’ll provide a thorough breakdown of IB Math AI Paper 3, ensuring you are familiarised with the structure of the exam and know what type of questions to expect.
Math AI Paper 3

Accounts for 20% of the student's subject grade.

Students have 1 hour to complete Paper 3.

Students can score up to 55 marks.

Paper 3 is made up of 2 questions. Students must answer both questions.

A GDC calculator is required for this paper.

Paper 3 focuses on the HL content of the Math AI syllabus.

A typical Math AI Paper 3 question may look the following way: Alessia is an ecologist working for Mediterranean fishing authorities. She is interested in whether the mackerel population density is likely to fall below 5000 mackerel per km3, as this is the minimum value required for sustainable fishing. She believes that the primary factor affecting the mackerel population is the interaction of mackerel with sharks, their main predator. The population densities of mackerel (M thousands per km3) and sharks (S per km3) in the Mediterranean Sea are modelled by the coupled differential equations: dM/dt = αM − βMS dS/dt = γMS − δS where t is measured in years, and α, β, γ and δ are parameters. This model assumes that no other factors affect the mackerel or shark population densities. The term αM models the population growth rate of the mackerel in the absence of sharks. The term βMS models the death rate of the mackerel due to being eaten by sharks. a) Suggest similar interpretations for the following terms:(i) γMS [1](ii) δS [1] b) An equilibrium point is a set of values of M and S, such that dM/dt = 0 and dS/dt = 0. Given that both species are present at the equilibrium point, (i) show that, at the equilibrium point, the value of the mackerel population density is δ/y. [3] (ii) find the value of the shark population density at the equilibrium point. [2] c) The equilibrium point found in part (b) gives the average values of M and S over time. Use the model to predict how the following events would affect the average value of M. Justify your answers. (i) Toxic sewage is added to the Mediterranean Sea. Alessia claims this reduces the shark population growth rate and hence the value of γ is halved. No other parameter changes. [2] (ii) Global warming increases the temperature of the Mediterranean Sea. Alessia claims that this promotes the mackerel population growth rate and hence the value of α is doubled. No other parameter changes. [2] d) To estimate the value of α, Alessia considers a situation where there are no sharks and the initial mackerel population density is M0. (i) Write down the differential equation for M that models this situation. [1] (ii) Show that the expression for the mackerel population density after t years is M = M0eαt. [4] (iii) Alessia estimates that the mackerel population density increases by a factor of three every two years. Show that α = 0.549 to three significant figures. [3] Based on additional observations, it is believed that α = 0.549, β = 0.236, γ = 0.244, δ = 1.39. Alessia decides to use Euler’s method to estimate future mackerel and shark population densities. The initial population densities are estimated to be M0 = 5.7 and S0 = 2. She uses a step length of 0.1 years. e) (i) Write down expressions for Mn+1 and Sn+1 in terms of Mn and Sn. [3] (ii) Use Euler’s method to find an estimate for the mackerel population density after one year. [2] f) Alessia will use her model to estimate whether the mackerel population density is likely to fall below the minimum value required for sustainable fishing, 5000 per km3, during the first nine years. (i) Use Euler’s method to sketch the trajectory of the phase portrait, for 4 ≤ M ≤ 7 and 1.5 ≤ S ≤ 3, over the first nine years. [3] (ii) Using your phase portrait, or otherwise, determine whether the mackerel population density would be sufficient to support sustainable fishing during the first nine years. [2] (iii) State two reasons why Alessia’s conclusion, found in part (f)(ii), might not be valid. [2]

How to succeed in Math AI Paper 3?

One of the best ways to prepare for IB Math AI Paper 3 is by practicing lots of past papers. This helps you get familiar with the question style and improves your ability to apply mathematical techniques effectively. It’s also important to do this under exam conditions so you can manage your time well and get comfortable with the format. Another key skill is using your GDC efficiently. It can save you time on tricky calculations, graphing, and statistics while reducing mistakes. But since it’s not always easy to use, you should spend plenty of time practicing with it. The more comfortable you are with its functions, the more confident you’ll be during the exam. We hope you found this post helpful.
