Are you looking to start writing your ESS IA but need some inspiration? Clastify is here to help you get started with writing your IA! In this guide, we will give you some tips to keep in mind when writing your ESS IA, based on our history of candidates with high-scoring IAs. The following structure is just a suggestion but you should keep in mind that many students have had high-scoring IAs even with slightly modified formats.

ESS IA Format and Structure

Title page:

Write Environmental Systems and Societies as the heading.

State the research question of your investigation.

Include the word count and the session for which you will submit the IA.

A good example can be found here.

Introduction:

State the main environmental issue being studied and its importance - what is the organism/compound/concept being studied (eg: heavy metal pollution, global warming, etc.)? What are its impacts?

State the personal or global significance of the topic - what made you choose this and why is it an important topic to investigate?

Briefly introduce the method used in the experiment and state why this is the most appropriate method to use for the experiment (for example, why were plants given acidic water to simulate acid rain's effects on plants)

A good example can be found here.

Research question:

State the main research question of the experiment including the independent and dependent variables.

Make sure to include units for the independent and dependent variables (if applicable).

An example research question should look like this: "To what extent does proximity to a factory affect how much industrial waste seeps into a river?"

A good example can be found here.

Background information/context:

Describe the main topic in more depth. If studying an organism, provide background information as to why you have chosen that particular organism - what makes it suitable for the study?

If you are conducting a demographic study (eg: how age affects recycling) explain why you have chosen the respective age groups for the study. Include the sampling locations as well as why these were chosen (eg: was it more urban, suburban, rural, etc).

Explain the main scientific background behind the environmental issue (eg: why is global warming or acid rain occurring?).

All the background information included should be directly focused on the research question.

Include relevant diagrams if applicable. Don't forget to provide a figure caption and cite the source of the diagram.

Include in-text citations throughout the background information section.

A good example of a strong background section can be found here and here.

Remember that you can also merge the background and introduction into one section if you believe that this provides better flow. IB ESS Case Studies List

Are you considering choosing IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) for the IB program but need to know if it will be a good fit? If you’re looking at different options and wondering about the challenges IB ESS might pose, this guide will provide you with some information so that you can make a well-informed decision.
How Hard is IB ESS?

Difficulty
Official IB statistics show that IB ESS is a difficult subject, with only 4.8% of students achieving a grade of 7, according to data from the May 2024 exam session. ESS used to be offered only at the Standard Level (SL), however from May 2026 it will be offered at the Higher Level (HL) as well. The low percentage of 7s achieved in IB ESS could be because students taking this subject generally are not interested in pursuing science beyond IB, so they only take IB ESS to fulfil the IB science requirement as it is much easier than IB Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, for example. Most students admit that IB ESS is a mildly challenging IB subject. It requires a significant amount of memorization regarding environmental theory. However, concepts are simple and easier to understand than in other more complex IB subjects such as IB Geography, which also has a significant environmental focus.
What are some of the challenges of IB ESS?

Students must understand natural processes (e.g., climate change, tectonic activity) and human activities (e.g., urbanization, migration), as well as the interconnectedness between humans and nature.

ESS is interdisciplinary and combines environmental science, ecology, and geography with ethical and social perspectives, requiring students to think scientifically and critically.

Students must memorize how food chains, energy flows, and biogeochemical cycles work, which requires a good understanding of the functioning of an ecosystem.

Students must use the systems thinking approach and analyze the situation as a whole as well as look at individual components. Students must evaluate feedback loops and sustainability models rather than simply memorizing concepts.

Arguments need to be clearly presented in short answers and essay format on exams. This requires accurate use of terminology and clear reasoning.

Students must learn to interpret climate graphs, population pyramids, and statistical data, which requires strong analytical skills. Students must analyze datasets, statistical trends, and scientific models to support their findings.

Students must design, conduct, and analyze geographic fieldwork, which involves data collection, methodology planning, and interpretation of results as part of the Internal Assessment (IA).

Climate change policies, conservation strategies, and global environmental challenges are constantly changing, requiring students to be up to date with current events.

Students must link small-scale environmental issues to larger global environmental trends to strengthen their evaluation.

CAROUSEL

Who should consider doing IB ESS?
Students who are interested in Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Climatology, Urban Planning, International Development, or other related fields would benefit from taking IB ESS as it provides a good introduction for studying these programs at college. However, students should be mindful that ESS is currently only offered at SL and is hence not accepted by many universities as an entry requirement to competitive programs. Students wishing to take the above majors might be better off choosing a similar subject such as IB Geography. However, the HL option for ESS will be available starting in May 2026, after which universities may change their stance around accepting ESS. Students wishing to pursue majors similar to those listed above should consider taking IB ESS at the Higher Level (HL) as they will be able to gain a more in-depth study of environmental science to prepare them for higher education in related fields. Students who are interested in environmental science but do not wish to pursue majors such as those listed above are advised to take IB ESS at the Standard Level (SL) instead.
Tips for Succeeding in IB ESS

Master key concepts early – Study core topics like ecosystems, sustainability, pollution management, and biodiversity to ensure you have a solid foundation that helps you later in the course.

Complete past papers – IB ESS places a strong emphasis on the application of theory. There is a lot of information that students need to be familiar with. Doing past paper questions will allow you to practice and apply these learned concepts, as well as develop your short-answer and essay-writing skills.

Use flashcards – Create flashcards for key terms and important concepts. Quiz yourself to reinforce your memory and improve recall. This will help you retain the information better.

Practice essay questions – Practice writing essay-style questions as these are a big part of the examination. You should time how long you take to complete one essay as well as the entire paper. This is because essay writing can often be time-consuming as you need to plan your thoughts and write them cohesively using a good flow within a set timeframe. It is important to practice this skill beforehand to ensure you do not run out of time during the actual exam.

Stay on track – In IB ESS, many concepts build upon previous topics. Make sure you clarify any doubts early on to ensure they do not confuse you later in the course.

Carefully plan your IA – Select a topic that you are truly interested in. Ensure your IA is well-organized, clear, and detailed as the IA is worth 20% of your overall grade. Be sure to explore our ESS IA exemplars for guidance. Choose a relevant research question, collect reliable data, and present clear graphs and evaluations in your analysis. A good format for an ESS IA is outlined here.

Practice drawing diagrams – Get experience drawing ecosystem models, food webs, nutrient cycles, and pollution flowcharts as these are frequently asked about on exams.

Understand systems thinking – ESS emphasizes interactions and feedback loops in environmental systems, so focus on cause-and-effect relationships and systems thinking rather than picking out isolated facts.

We hope you found this post helpful. Understand how hard IB ESS is. Explore what makes the course challenging, who it is suitable for, the difference between SL and HL, and tips on succeeding in IB ESS.

How Hard is IB ESS?

Whether you're trying to decide between IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) and IB Biology, or simply want to understand how the two subjects differ, you've come to the right place. In this post, we'll compare the content, difficulty, and skills required for each course so you can make an informed decision about which subject best suits your interests and future goals.
IB ESS vs IB Biology

Difficulty
IB ESS and IB Biology are both Group 4 science subjects, but they are often regarded very differently in terms of difficulty. While both courses require students to develop scientific thinking and analytical skills, IB Biology is generally considered the more demanding of the two, particularly at Higher Level. Official IB examination statistics support this perception. In the May 2024 examination session, 26.0% of HL ESS students and 16.8% of SL ESS students achieved a grade 7, compared with 13.8% of HL Biology students and 5.6% of SL Biology students. While these figures suggest that students typically achieve higher grades in ESS, they should not be interpreted as meaning that the subject is "easy." Success in ESS still requires strong analytical skills, careful data interpretation, and a solid understanding of environmental concepts. That said, IB Biology is generally viewed as the more challenging course. The syllabus contains a significantly greater amount of detailed scientific content and requires students to memorize numerous biological processes, structures, and terminology. ESS focuses more on applying environmental concepts to real-world issues and interpreting case studies. Ultimately, the better choice depends on your interests and strengths. Students who enjoy memorizing scientific details often prefer Biology, while those interested in sustainability, environmental issues, and interdisciplinary learning may find ESS more engaging.
Content
Although both subjects explore the natural world, they approach it from very different perspectives. IB Biology focuses on the science of living organisms. Throughout the course, students study topics including cell biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, human physiology, and biotechnology. The emphasis is on understanding biological processes, explaining scientific mechanisms, interpreting experimental data, and applying knowledge to unfamiliar situations. Many questions require detailed written explanations supported by accurate biological terminology and diagrams. IB Environmental Systems and Societies takes a much broader approach by combining biology, chemistry, geography, environmental science, economics, and social sciences. Students investigate ecosystems, biodiversity, climate change, pollution, resource management, conservation, food production, energy systems, and sustainability. Rather than focusing solely on scientific theory, ESS encourages students to consider environmental issues from multiple perspectives and evaluate the interactions between human societies and natural systems. Both subjects place considerable emphasis on practical investigations, data analysis, and scientific inquiry. Students complete an Internal Assessment that involves independent fieldwork or experimentation, analyses of environmental or biological data, evaluation of evidence, and development of conclusions based on their findings.

CAROUSEL

The Challenges of IB ESS and IB Biology
IB ESS

Students must understand concepts from several different disciplines, including ecology, geography, economics, and environmental science.

Many examination questions require students to apply knowledge to unfamiliar environmental issues and contemporary case studies.

ESS places significant emphasis on interpreting graphs, maps, data tables, and environmental trends.

Students must evaluate environmental management strategies by considering both ecological and socioeconomic perspectives.

The subject requires balancing scientific knowledge with critical thinking and well-supported evaluation.

IB Biology

The syllabus is extensive, requiring students to learn and retain a large amount of detailed biological knowledge.

Students must memorise complex biological processes, terminology, and structures throughout the course.

Many exam questions assess conceptual understanding rather than simple recall, requiring students to apply knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.

Drawing and interpreting biological diagrams accurately is an essential examination skill.

Success in Biology often depends on consistent revision due to the volume of content covered.

Who should consider doing IB ESS and/or IB Biology?
IB Biology is an excellent choice for students interested in medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, biomedical sciences, pharmacy, and many other life science degrees. It provides a strong scientific foundation and is frequently required or recommended by universities for these programs. IB ESS is ideal for students interested in environmental science, sustainability, conservation, geography, environmental policy, climate science, international development, or resource management. It is also an excellent option for students who enjoy understanding the connections between science, society, and global environmental challenges. If you're deciding between the two, think carefully about your interests and learning style. Students who enjoy detailed scientific content, memorisation, and understanding biological mechanisms are likely to enjoy IB Biology. Students who prefer studying real-world environmental issues, analyzing data, discussing sustainability, and considering multiple perspectives will often find IB ESS to be a better fit. We hope you found this comparison helpful. Learn about how IB ESS and Biology vary. Learn about which subject is more difficult, the challenges of you may face in each, what you'll cover during the courses, and which to choose.

IB ESS vs IB Biology

If you're an ESS student aiming to obtain a 7, you've come to the right place. In this post, we will provide you with the necessary tips for achieving a perfect score.
How to get a 7 in ESS?

Revisit your notes frequently
While not as content-heavy as IB Biology or Chemistry, ESS still requires a great deal of memorisation. The best way to succeed is to regularly review your notes and revisit topics to keep them fresh in your mind. With so much to cover, it’s easy to forget older material as you move on to new concepts, so consistent revision is key. You don’t need to memorize every little detail – just focus on understanding the main ideas. This makes exam prep much easier since building on what you already know is way less stressful than starting from scratch. Regular reviews help reinforce your learning, save time, and keep you from feeling overwhelmed.

Make use of case studies
ESS heavily emphasizes real-world applications. You need to support your answers with relevant case studies for ecology, biodiversity, atmospheric systems, and other topics. Make sure you select case studies that are both relevant and easy to recall.

Study smart
Simply spending hours reading textbooks isn’t the most effective way to retain information. Instead, optimise your study techniques by using methods like active recall and spaced repetition. Active recall involves actively retrieving information from memory rather than just passively reviewing it. This can be done by testing yourself with questions or summarizing concepts without looking at your notes. Spaced repetition, on the other hand, involves revisiting information at increasing intervals to reinforce retention. You can also incorporate flashcards into your study routine. Creating flashcards yourself is also beneficial because the process of making them forces you to engage with the material, reinforcing your understanding. Make sure to design your cards with clear questions and answers, and avoid cramming too much information into one card.

Practice with past paper questions
A lot of people think ESS is just about memorizing facts, but it’s just as important to know how to apply what you’ve learned. ESS exams don’t just test your ability to recall information – they require you to use your knowledge in real-world situations. You’ll need to interpret data, analyze case studies, and back up your answers with evidence. That’s why practicing past paper and questionbanks is so important. It helps you get comfortable applying concepts in context.

Practice under exam conditions
Remember to practice past papers in a setting that feels like the real exam. This means timing yourself and working without distractions, just as you would during the actual test. Doing this will help you get used to managing your time and answering questions under pressure.

CAROUSEL

Craft a strong IA
The IA makes up 25% (20% for HL) of your final ESS grade, so doing well here is crucial. A strong IA should have a clear research question and hypothesis, use appropriate data collection methods, include graphs, tables, and statistical analysis where relevant, and discuss limitations and improvements to show critical thinking. You can also look at our sample ESS IAs for ideas and guidance. If you're looking for specific, personalised feedback, make sure to submit your work for Clastify's review service.

Stay healthy and manage stress
ESS, just like any other IB subject, requires consistent effort over the entire course. To stay on track and avoid burnout, take care of your health by getting enough sleep, taking breaks when needed, and focusing on your well-being. We hope you found this post helpful.
