With its unseen questions, the IB Business Management Paper 2 is often a source anxiety for many students. In this post, we’ll however provide a thorough breakdown of this paper, ensuring you can approach it confidently.
IB Business Management Paper 2

Paper 2 is based on unseen stimulus material with a quantitative focus.

For SL, Paper 2 contributes 35% to the overall subject grade, while for HL, it accounts for 30%.

SL students have 1 hour 30 minutes, while HL students are given 1 hour 45 minutes to complete Paper 2.

A calculator is required for this exam.

Paper 2 is made up of two sections – Section A and Section B.

Section A

Section A is made up of medium-length questions

There is a quantitative focus in these questions. Students answer questions with reference and analysis of the provided information

Paper 2 may cover all 5 units of the syllabus

Students must be equipped with the skills of analysing and presenting information.

A typical Section A question may look like this: Florian Stones (FS) sells handmade bracelets made from natural stones. FS enjoys strong brand awareness. Table 2 shows forecasted figures for FS for the year ending 31 December 2022.

Fixed costs

$15 000

Variable costs per bracelet

$40

Price per bracelet

$70

Number of bracelets produced

800

(a) Define the term ''brand awareness'' [2] (b) Using Table 2, draw a fully labelled break-even chart, to scale, for 2022. [4] (c) Using Table 2, calculate: (i) the profit or loss in 2022 for FS if its production and sales increases to 1200. [2] (ii) the price FS would need to charge per bracelet if it sells 800 bracelets and wants to make profit of $10,000. Assume that the costs remain the same. [2]
Section B

In this section, students choose to answer one out of two questions

The questions in Section B, in structure, are very similar to those in Section A

The Section B questions however are longer and require deeper analysis.

A typical Section B question may look like this: Coco Delight (CD) produces a range of luxury chocolate bars that are sold and manufactured in New Zealand. CD has created an overseas supply chain in which all ingredients for its chocolate bars are imported to New Zealand. (a) Describe one feature of a supply chain [2] CD is aware that overseas suppliers use palm oil* in the production of chocolate bars. Palm oil production is damaging to the environment, so CD has decided to produce a new ethical chocolate bar that contains only a quarter of the palm oil used in its other chocolate bars. These new ethical chocolate bars will be considerably more expensive than the chocolate bars in CD’s current range and will be priced using a premium pricing method. Part of the profits from the sales of the new chocolate bars will be used to finance sustainable palm oil production to reduce the impact on the environment. (b) Explain one advantage and one disadvantage for CD of using a premium pricing method for the new ethical chocolate bar. [4] CD is considering exporting the ethical chocolate bars to consumers in new overseas markets. It has identified three possible target countries: X, Y and Z. CD used a random sampling method of 500 consumers in each of the three countries to carry out market research. The new ethical chocolate bar is to be launched in 2024. The results of the market research are given in Table 4. Table 4

<colgroup><col style="width:13.71%;"><col style="width:29%;"><col style="width:29.7%;"><col style="width:27.59%;"></colgroup>

Possible target country

Percentage of respondents who would try the new ethical chocolate bar

Percentage of respondents who would possibly try the new chocolate bar

Percentage of respondents who would not try the new chocolate bar

X

60%

32%

8%

Y

42%

38%

20%

Z

28%

62%

10%

(c) Comment on the market research in Table 4. [2] (d) Explain one benefit for CD of collecting market research using random sampling. [2] CD has employed an economics consultancy to review the current and future economic situation in each of the three possible target countries in which it wants to launch the new ethical chocolate bar. The chocolate bar is expected to be priced higher than the chocolate bars of CD’s competitors in all three countries. No ethical chocolate bars are currently produced by these competitors. The consultancy:

forecasted economic conditions for each possible target country for 2024 and 2028

used data from the last six years and estimated the probability of CD’s success upon entering each market based on the experiences of other confectionery manufacturers

carried out an extensive STEEPLE analysis for each possible target country.

Table 5

Target country

Forecasted economic conditions in 2024

Forecasted economic conditions in 2028

Probability of success

STEEPLE analysis summary

X

Stable

Worsening

0.42

Favourable to business

Y

Improving

Stable

0.58

No clear trend but limited technology

Z

Declining

Strongly improving

0.79

Concerns, especially about political in the future

(e) Using the data provided in Table 4 and Table 5, and other information in the stimulus, recommend which target country CD should launch its new ethical chocolate bar in [10]
How to succeed in Business Management Paper 2?
To do well in Paper 2 of IB Business Management, you need a strong understanding of the syllabus and good analytical skills. Knowing the units thoroughly is important because the paper can cover virtually any topics of the syllabus. It’s however just as important to be able to think critically and analyze information. This includes reading and understanding financial statements, market data, and other business information. You must be able to effectively spot trends, problems, or opportunities. To develop these practical skills, it’s best to practice with past exam questions. This helps you get used to applying your knowledge to real-life business scenarios, explaining your ideas clearly, and backing them up with evidence. We hope you found this post helpful. Whether you are looking at corporate culture or marketing innovations, keep reading for our suggestions on how to write an extended essay that will meet the rubric in the new IB assessment criteria for first assessment in 2027.
Business and Management EE Criteria and Checklist
You can receive as many as 30 marks for your extended essay based on the following criteria:

Criterion A: Framework for the essay - 6 points

This criterion evaluates whether your research question, chosen research methods, and structural conventions provide an effective foundation for your business inquiry. In Business and Management, your framework must be clearly stated and focused, ensuring the topic is manageable within the 4,000-word limit. You need to explain the suitability of your specific research methods, the tools used to collect data, and how they connect to the overall methodology or rationale of the subject. Effective structure in Business and Management often includes the use of diagrams and graphs to illustrate organizational data, all of which must be clearly labelled and referenced within your text. For a maximum of 6 points:

Frame your research question to focus on a specific, contemporary business issue or case study rather than a broad, general industry.

Explicitly define your research methods, such as interviews, surveys, or focus groups, and explain why they are the best fit for your specific inquiry.

Include a "Methodology" section that details exactly how, when, and where you gathered your data so the research process is transparent and replicable.

Ensure every diagram or graph you include features essential elements: a clear title, appropriate labels, and a comprehensive legend or key.

Organize your essay with informative subheadings that follow a logical business argument, such as "Literature Review," "Data Analysis," and "Evaluation".

A good example can be found here.
Criterion B: Knowledge and understanding - 6 points

To score well here, you must demonstrate a deep grasp of the business subject matter and the academic context of your research. This involves the accurate and consistent application of subject-specific terminology to show you understand the underlying concepts. You are expected to use relevant research materials, which for Business and Management often includes a mix of primary data and secondary sources like academic journals or financial reports. Your understanding is also shown through how effectively you use key business concepts to frame your investigation. For a maximum of 6 points:

Consistently use technical business terms, such as "supply and demand," "corporate culture," or "stakeholder," to demonstrate professional subject knowledge.

Explain the theoretical models or business tools (like the marketing mix or motivational theories) that underpin your specific investigation.

Incorporate secondary sources like government publications, news articles, or existing case studies to provide a broader context for your findings.

Use and correctly define key business concepts such as "innovation," "strategy," or "change" as the core ideas around which your research is built.

Synthesize information from different sources into your own words, avoiding over-quoting to ensure your own understanding of the topic is evident.

A good example is seen here.
Criterion C: Analysis and line of argument - 6 points

This criterion focuses on your ability to break down business data into essential elements to reach relevant findings. You must maintain a clear, reasoned thread that logically connects your research question to your data analysis and final conclusions. In Business and Management, this involves processing your evidence through appropriate lenses, such as comparative analysis or evaluation of the impact of specific strategies. Every point of analysis must be backed by evidence from your research and lead the reader toward a convincing answer to your research question. For a maximum of 6 points:

Process your evidence using appropriate business techniques, such as SWOT analysis, financial ratio analysis, or identifying patterns in stakeholder responses.

Maintain a clear line of argument by using transitional sentences that explain how each set of data helps answer your original research question.

Apply critical analysis to determine the significance of business decisions or the influence of specific factors rather than just describing results.

Focus your analysis strictly on addressing the research question, setting aside peripheral information that does not support your central argument.

Establish mini-conclusions at the end of major sections to summarize what you have discovered so far and how it links to the next part of your essay.

A strong example can be read here.

CAROUSEL

Criterion D: Discussion and evaluation - 8 points

This criterion requires a balanced review of your findings in a wider business context. You must discuss the significance of your results, weighing them against established business theories or diverse perspectives. Evaluation is crucial; you need to honestly appraise your methodology and sources, identifying specific strengths and limitations, such as potential bias or sample size. Finally, you should summarize your findings into a final conclusion that considers broader implications and notes any unresolved questions. For a maximum of 8 points:

Compare your research findings with established literature to discuss how typical or unusual your results are within the business world.

Critically evaluate your research methodology by identifying specific sources of error, such as respondent bias or data limitations, and their impact on your results.

Discuss your findings from multiple perspectives, considering how different stakeholders (e.g., employees, managers, or shareholders) might interpret the same issue.

Provide a summative conclusion that directly answers your research question based only on the evidence you have presented in the essay.

Propose specific, realistic improvements or extensions to your research that could address the limitations you identified during your evaluation.

A good example can be seen here.
Criterion E: Reflection - 4 points

This criterion assesses your personal growth and the research process based on a 500-word reflective statement on the Reflection and Progress Form (RPF). Supporting documents play a crucial role in the IB Business Management Internal Assessment. They provide real-world evidence that supports your research question and ensures your analysis is grounded in actual business data rather than in theory alone. This post will provide a detailed overview of the IB Business Management IA supporting documents, so you can check if you meet the requirements successfully.
IB Business Management IA Supporting Documents

What are supporting documents?
Supporting documents are authentic materials (e.g. documents, interviews, surveys, etc.) obtained from the real-world organization you are studying for your IA. Supporting documents confirm that your research question is based on a genuine business issue and that your analysis reflects real decision-making. These documents are submitted as an appendix alongside your IA but are not included in the word count. The supporting documents are where most of the information for the Business Management IA comes from. The supporting documents you choose should allow you to analyze a minimum of 3-4 business tools (e.g. SWOT analysis, Ansoff matrix, STEEPLE analysis, etc). Your Business Management IA should be accompanied by 3-5 supporting documents, other than your textbooks or class notes/slides. The supporting documents must also not be more than 3 years old and should be 5 pages or less. For documents that are longer than 5 pages, you should pick only the most relevant sections to include.
Examples of supporting documents

Primary sources
Primary sources are original data collected directly from the chosen organisation or stakeholders, providing first-hand, authentic evidence specific to the IA. Primary supporting documents can include:

Interviews – These could cover a wide range of topics, such as management decisions, budget constraints, influence of competitors, etc. You should include a list of the interview questions asked as well as a summary of the interview results.

Surveys/questionnaires – These could cover topics such as employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction, and more. Include a copy of the survey questions as well as a summary of the survey results.

Focus groups – These can be used to obtain business information from a specific group of stakeholders. Include a copy of the questions asked in the focus group as well as a summary of the results.

Cash flow forecasts – These show forward-looking financial data, including expected inflows and outflows, which can be relevant to planning and decision-making.

Secondary sources
Secondary sources are existing information collected by others, used to provide background, context, or comparative data supporting the IA analysis. Secondary sources can include:

Published company annual reports – These are public financial and strategic information that can be used to understand the overall business performance and corporate objectives.

Industry market research reports – This can help you understand market size, growth trends, and competitive conditions relevant to the business. It can also highlight consumer behaviour, risks, and opportunities within the industry.

Competitor financial statements – If available, you can show comparative data from competitors to benchmark the business's performance and assess its relative competitiveness in the market.

Please keep in mind that the primary and secondary sources mentioned above are only examples. Feel free to use other primary and secondary sources as you see fit for your IA! We hope this post has helped you learn more about the supporting documents for the IB Business Management IA. Both of these subjects are more challenging at the Higher Level (HL), where students will be taught some topics in more depth than at the Standard Level (SL), as well as being taught some HL-specific topics. Official IB exam statistics show that IB Economics is the easier of both subjects. As per the May 2024 examination data, 15.0% of HL and 14.1% of SL Economics students achieve a grade 7, compared to just 7.7% of HL and 10.7% of SL Business Management students. These statistics can however be very misleading. Just because a relatively high proportion of students achieve a perfect score does not necessarily mean that the subject is easier. It is important to keep in mind that IB Economics is more theoretical and requires a sound knowledge of economic theory, while IB Business Management focuses more on case studies and real-world applications of the studied theory. As such, IB Economics may be "easier" as the theory can be memorized, while the real-world applications in Business Management cannot. The decision on which subject is more difficult is subjective and depends on the strengths of each student. Some students say that IB Economics is more difficult while others say it is IB Business Management. If you are good at memorization then Economics might be a better fit for you, while if you prefer application-based assessments then Business management might be a better fit for you.
Content
IB Business Management focuses on the internal operations of businesses, covering areas such as business organization, human resource management, finance, marketing, and operations. The course emphasizes practical knowledge that is often strengthened through case studies, providing insights into real-world business scenarios. Students develop analytical and decision-making skills, learning to apply business theories to practical situations. This prepares them for further studies in management, marketing, entrepreneurship, etc. IB Economics focuses on economic theories and models, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, international economics, and development economics. The course emphasizes understanding theoretical concepts and interpreting graphical data. Students develop critical thinking, quantitative analysis, and the ability to evaluate economic issues and policies. This prepares them for further studies in economic research, finance, and policy-making and develops their understanding of economic systems and their impact at global and local levels. Both IB Business Management and IB Economics develop analytical and critical thinking skills. They require students to evaluate complex scenarios and apply theoretical concepts to real-world situations.

CAROUSEL

The Challenges of IB Business Management and IB Economics

IB Business Management

Students must understand detailed business concepts and frameworks, which may be difficult to relate to practical scenarios without thorough analysis.

Interpreting and evaluating case studies requires an understanding of business operations and the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical settings.

Students must excel in both numerical analysis and qualitative evaluations. Students must ensure they are comfortable with performing calculations as well as writing essay-style answers.

IB Economics

Economic theories can be highly abstract, making it challenging for students to visualize and understand their real-world applications. Students need to find a way to apply the relevant economic theory to real-world applications, as it is not as clear-cut as in Business Management.

Strong graphical analysis skills are required as students need to both create and interpret graphs to support their analyses.

Students need to understand both broad economic policies (macroeconomics) and individual market behaviours (microeconomics), which can be challenging. Students need to know which theories are applicable in each scenario.

Who should consider doing IB Business Management and/or IB Economics?
Students who are interested in learning more challenging theories and pursuing more rigorous careers should take IB Economics as this subject provides a solid foundation for higher studies in related fields such as economics, law, policy, etc. Economics is also preferable for students looking to work in federal or legal environments. Students who are interested in real-world applications rather than theory should take IB Business Management. This can lead to careers in various fields such as marketing, finance, human resources, etc. IB Business Management is preferable for students who are looking to work in corporate industries rather than in the government or in legal environments. We hope you found this post helpful. Learn about how IB Business Management and Economics vary. Learn about which subject is more difficult, the challenges you may face in each, what you'll cover during the courses, and which one to choose.

IB Business Management vs Economics

Studying for IB Business Management does not have to be overwhelming. With the right approach, you can tackle the content confidently and stay ahead. In this post, we’ll share practical study tips to help you succeed while keeping stress to a minimum.
How to study for IB Business Management
Prioritise understanding – While it’s important to know key concepts, IB Business exams focus heavily on applying those concepts. Instead of spending too much time memorizing every small detail, focus on truly understanding how the concepts function in real-world scenarios. This will save you valuable time when preparing for assessments and help you use the acquired knowledge practically. Moreover, truly understanding how a concept works helps it stick in your mind for much longer. Create flashcards – Flashcards are an excellent way to study for IB Business Management as they allow you to quickly revisit topics you’ve studied and reinforce your understanding. The process of creating flashcards itself helps deepen your knowledge, as you’ll need to break down complex concepts into concise, easy-to-grasp points. Flashcards are also very useful for last-minute revision. We recommend using Anki, a free flashcard software that lets you create customized flashcards for your study needs. Alternatively, you can make flashcards on paper – the choice is yours. For the best results, design each flashcard to focus on a single concept. When studying, try answering the question on the flashcard out loud before flipping it over to check the answer. Use spaced repetition – When studying for IB Business Management, we recommend using spaced repetition, a learning technique that involves reviewing material at strategically spaced intervals. The idea is to revisit information just before you're likely to forget it, which strengthens your memory and reinforces long-term understanding. Initially, you review the content more frequently, and as you become more familiar with it, the intervals between reviews increase. Memorise key definitions – We recommend focusing on memorizing key definitions, as exam questions often require you to provide them. Spaced repetition can be an effective strategy to retain these definitions over time, ensuring you're well-prepared for final exams. Understand case studies – Case studies are a key component of the syllabus. When preparing for assessments, focus on truly understanding the case study rather than just memorizing it. Take the time to see how the concepts apply and how they manifest in the context of the case study. Familiarise yourself with IB Business Command terms – Understand the different command terms in IB Business. Knowing what the question is asking helps you structure your response effectively and ensures you hit all the necessary points. Make sure to check out our post on IB Business Management Command Terms.

CAROUSEL

Practice past papers – Working through past papers is one of the most effective ways to prepare for your IB Business Management exam. Not only does it familiarize you with the format and types of questions, but it also helps you identify common themes and areas that are frequently tested. By practicing under timed conditions, you can also improve your exam technique and manage your time more effectively on the day. Make sure to verify your answers with the mark scheme and learn from your mistakes. Revisit your class notes – While practicing past papers is important, don’t forget to regularly review your textbook and class notes. These resources contain all the foundational knowledge you need, and revisiting them will help reinforce your understanding of complex concepts. Create revision notes – Summarize each topic into concise revision notes or bullet points. This will make you understand the topics and ensure you have a clear view of the entire syllabus. Study with friends – Form a study group to chat through key concepts and case studies – explaining things to others is a great way to reinforce your own understanding. Just make sure you stay on track and don’t get too carried away with the social side of things! We hope you found this post helpful! Best IB Business Management Textbooks

Whether you’re just starting your IB Business Management journey or already deep into it, aiming for that perfect 7, this post is here to help. No matter where you are, we've got some useful tips and insights to guide you towards reaching that goal.
How to get a 7 in IB Business Management?

Make use of real-world case studies
IB Business Management heavily emphasises the application of concepts to real-world scenarios. Examiners love to see students integrating case studies into their answers, so make sure you have a few strong examples ready. These should be businesses that are well-documented and easy to recall under exam conditions. Whether it’s Apple’s innovation strategies, McDonald’s franchising model, or Tesla’s sustainability approach, being able to reference real businesses will make your response more substantiated.
Practice with past paper questions
Understanding the content is one thing, but applying it effectively in exams is another. IB Business Management exams require you to analyse case studies, apply business concepts, and justify your answers with logical reasoning. Practicing past paper questions will help you develop a strong exam technique.
Practice under exam conditions
Time management is crucial in IB Business Management exams. Students often struggle to complete all the questions within the given time. To avoid this, make sure to simulate exam conditions when practicing past papers. Set a timer, eliminate distractions, and attempt questions as if you were in the real exam. This will help you get accustomed to working under pressure and improve your ability to allocate time effectively for different question types.

Review your notes frequently
The best way to stay on top of the material is by regularly reviewing your notes. With multiple units covering everything from finance to human resource management, it’s easy to forget older topics as you move forward. Instead of cramming, schedule short, consistent review sessions to reinforce your understanding. You don’t need to memorize every detail, but you should aim to grasp the fundamental theories and how they interconnect.

CAROUSEL

Craft a strong IA
Your Internal Assessment (IA) accounts for 25% of your final grade, so doing well here can significantly boost your overall score. A strong IA should have a clear research question, a well-structured analysis, and relevant business tools (such as SWOT or force-field analysis). Be sure to justify your recommendations with evidence and mention any potential limitations. To get a good idea of what a successful IA looks like, make sure to check out our wide variety of high-scoring Business Management IA exemplars. If you're looking for specific, personalised feedback, make sure to submit your work to Clastify's review service.

Stay healthy and manage stress
Business Management requires consistent effort throughout the course. To avoid burnout, take care of your physical and mental health. Get enough sleep, take regular breaks, and stay active.

Study smart
Simply reading textbooks for hours isn’t the most efficient way to retain information. Instead, use active recall and spaced repetition to maximize your learning. Active recall involves testing yourself by summarising concepts from memory or answering practice questions without looking at your notes. Spaced repetition means revisiting information at increasing intervals to prevent forgetting. Flashcards can also be helpful for memorizing key business terms, formulas, and case study facts. The process of creating flashcards itself reinforces your learning, so it is better to make your own flashcards instead of relying on pre-made ones. We hope you found this post helpful. A comprehensive guide to obtaining a 7 in IB Business Management. Explore our top tips on how to achieve a perfect score.

How to get a 7 in IB Business Management?

Are you thinking about choosing IB Business and Management as your Group 3 subject for the IB program, but are unsure if it will be a good choice for you? If you’re considering different options and wondering about the challenges IB Business and Management might pose, this guide will provide you with some insights so that you can make a well-informed decision.
How hard is IB Business and Management?
Official IB statistics show that IB Business Management is a highly popular but rigorously assessed course, with around 12% to 14% of HL students and 8% to 10% of SL students achieving a grade 7 in recent exam sessions. While these success rates are slightly higher than some other Group 3 subjects, this statistic can be quite misleading. Just because a decent proportion of students achieve a top score does not mean the subject is a "soft option." It is important to keep in mind that IB Business Management is assessed through a mix of qualitative case studies, real-world business tools, and quantitative financial calculations. Grading requires a balance of precise data analysis and subjective evaluation, meaning there is rarely a single "correct" answer in the higher-mark essay questions. Most students admit that IB Business Management is a moderately challenging but highly practical IB subject. It is often considered more accessible and less abstract than IB Economics because its concepts, e.g. marketing, human resources, and business strategy, are easily visible in the everyday world. That being said, comparison between these subjects is subjective and depends heavily on an individual student's strengths. While IB Economics focuses heavily on theoretical models and macro/micro-level graphs, IB Business Management requires you to actively apply management theories directly to real, operating corporations.
What are some of the challenges of IB Business Management?

Mastering Business Tools and Frameworks – Students must comprehend and apply a wide array of analytical tools, such as SWOT analysis, Ansoff’s Matrix, STEEPLE analysis, and Boston Consulting Group (BCG) matrixes. Students must demonstrate that they can effectively choose the right tool for the right business scenario.

The Quantitative Component – The course is not just about writing essays; it involves a significant amount of financial math. Students must apply formulas for final accounts, ratio analysis (e.g., profitability, liquidity, efficiency ratios), investment appraisal, and break-even analysis.

Contextual Application to Case Studies – Memorizing definitions is not enough. Students must analyze unseen stimulus material or a pre-released case study and tie their theoretical knowledge directly to the specific problems facing that business.

Critical Evaluation and Strategy – Higher-level questions require students to discuss, evaluate, and recommend business strategies. This means weighing the pros and cons of a decision (such as an external growth strategy or a change in leadership style) and justifying a final recommendation.

The Internal Assessment (IA) – Students must conduct a research project on a real business issue or decision facing an organization. This can be challenging as it requires gathering primary or secondary data, applying appropriate business tools, and maintaining a strictly objective, analytical tone.

CAROUSEL

Who should consider doing IB Business Management?
Students who wish to pursue Business Administration, Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management, Entrepreneurship, or International Relations would benefit from taking IB Business Management. It provides an exceptional foundation for studying these programs at university and gives students a head start on using corporate terminology. Students wishing to pursue business majors in college should consider taking IB Business Management at the Higher Level (HL), as they will dive deeper into advanced topics like accounting, operations management, and strategic decision-making. Students who are interested in gaining general commercial awareness or want a practical Group 3 subject to balance a science-heavy workload are advised to take IB Business Management at the Standard Level (SL) instead.
Tips for Succeeding in IB Business Management

Solve Past Papers and Case Studies – IB Business Management places a great emphasis on context. Doing past paper questions allows you to practice analyzing data quickly and teaches you how to structure your answers using the specific command terms (e.g., Analyze, Evaluate, Discuss).

Learn the Financial Formulas – Do not lose easy marks on the quantitative questions. Practice calculating cash flows, balance sheets, and ratios until they become second nature. Understanding what the numbers actually mean for the business is just as important as calculating them correctly.

Keep Up with Real-World Business News – Follow global business stories (e.g., tech mergers, supply chain issues, branding crises). Being able to weave real-world corporate examples into your exam answers will instantly improve the quality of your essays.

Structure Your Essays (CUEGIS/Strategic Frameworks) – Ensure your long-form answers are cohesive. Use clear introductions, separate paragraphs for different business tools or perspectives, and always conclude with a balanced, justified recommendation based on your analysis. Watch your time closely during mock exams so you don't run out of time on the heavily weighted final questions.

Stay Organized with Key Terminology – Create flashcards for business terms and definitions. The IB marking criteria strictly reward the accurate use of business terminology throughout your papers.

Carefully Plan Your IA – Select a company and a forward-looking question or problem that truly interests you (e.g., "Should Company X expand into market Y?"). Ensure your IA applies a robust mix of business tools and maintains a clear, analytical focus. Keep reading for tips on how to format and structure your work.
CUEGIS Essay format and structure
CUEGIS Essay is an extended response question waiting for Business and Management students in section C of their Paper 2. It is graded for 20 points which accounts for 10% of their grade. Students are expected to answer it using two of the concepts:

Change involves the ongoing adaptation of business strategies, goals, and processes in response to internal dynamics or external influences. The forces driving change represent the advantages it brings while restraining forces are the reasons for resistance. Due to these opposing forces, businesses need to manage change to stay competitive.

Culture covers the collective attitudes, values, goals, and practices of individuals within a business or country. It shapes the working relationships among internal stakeholders and the ways of interacting with external stakeholders.

Ethics are the moral principles guiding a firm's decision-making and strategies. It relates to what is deemed right or wrong from the perspective of the society. An ethical business applies these moral principles in all interactions with stakeholders.

Globalization refers to the increasing integration and interdependence of world economies, leading to consumers worldwide developing similar habits and tastes. It results from various economic, social, technological, cultural, and political changes. Globalization offers opportunities for business growth but also poses threats to their operations.

Innovation is the process of turning new ideas and research into commercial products and processes. It is crucial for businesses to innovate to keep up with competitive, technologically advanced markets and increasingly sophisticated customers.

Strategy is an action plan that a business uses to achieve its objectives, essentially the long-term plans for the business.

After understanding the key CUEGIS concepts you can proceed to write the essay. Below you will find Clastify's recommended structure, which is based on our extensive experience with the IB assessments. Tailor it to your preferences keeping in mind the assessment criteria.
Introduction

Present the organization under study - its name, type of business, scope of operations, industry, etc.

Define the key terms relevant in the context of the research question.

Introduce the 2 concepts that will be applied in the analysis.

Formulate a thesis statement that will guide your essay.

Briefly describe your approach to answering the research question.

The Body
Divide the body into 2-3 paragraphs describing relevant information about the company in the context of the title, and devoted to the analysis of the separate concepts.

Describe the organization's experience in reference to the essay's topic.

Explain how this event relates to one of the CUEGIS concepts.

Highlight the impact of the experience on stakeholder groups.

In your analysis apply business and management tools and theories.

After having presented the company's past actions, describe how it could address the topic in the future.

Remember to maintain a logical structure: introduce reasoned arguments backed by concrete examples and supported by appropriate justifications.

Ensure that the discussion is balanced, and takes into account different viewpoints (advantages and disadvantages)

For instance: Globalization has allowed IKEA to leverage mass production due to the increasing convergence of habits and tastes worldwide. By focusing on standardization, customization, and functionality, IKEA's "one design suits all" strategy has become more effective, offering suitable products globally. This strategy includes providing products in flat-packed form, which reduces shipping, storage, and assembly costs while enhancing supply chain efficiency. Mass production enables IKEA to maintain low prices and high quality due to economies of scale, further benefiting from globalization. Impact on stakeholders - examples:

Customers: customers worldwide benefit from lower prices due to economies of scale and mass production. The standardization of products ensures consistent quality and availability across different markets. The flat-packed design makes transportation easier and reduces shipping costs.

Employees: IKEA’s global expansion can create job opportunities in different regions, from manufacturing to retail. The company’s focus on efficiency and innovation can also foster a dynamic working environment.

Shareholders: shareholders benefit from IKEA’s global strategy through increased market share, revenue growth, and enhanced profitability due to economies of scale and efficient supply chain management.

Suppliers: suppliers can gain from long-term contracts with a global company like IKEA, which can provide stable demand for their products and opportunities for growth.

Conclusion
Summarize your analysis, highlighting the key aspects:

Address the company's two different stakeholder groups (conflict or agreement)

Present the end result.

Evaluate the thesis stated in the introduction.

Did the firm experience a success or a failure?

We are hoping that you found this guide useful and that you are now ready to ace your Business and Management Paper! CUEGIS Essay Format and Structure

Case studies are a crucial aspect of IB Business and Management, where students analyze real or fictitious corporate scenarios and evaluate complex organizational challenges. This method develops critical decision-making skills, preparing students for both external examinations and the global marketplace. This post will provide you with an in-depth overview of what IB Business and Management case studies contain and where you might encounter them.
IB Business and Management Case Studies Explained

Paper 1 – The Pre-Released Context (SL and HL)
Paper 1 evaluates a student's mastery of the business management syllabus through a single, previously unseen 800- to 1,000-word case study, with an identical structure for both SL and HL students. Approximately 3-6 months before the examination, the IB publishes a preparatory statement consisting of two key parts:

Contextual Research Topics – The first component introduces a select group of contemporary business topics designed to expand upon the core syllabus. Students are expected to dedicate roughly five hours to researching these external trends, enabling the IB to assess their understanding of real-world business developments that emerged after the course guide was published.

Case Study Preview – The second component provides a preview of roughly the first 200 words of the actual exam case study, giving students context of what's to come and minimizing the overall new reading volume during the exam itself. During the actual exam, students are given an unseen continuation of the case study with new data (like economic or financial updates) and are required to act as business consultants to answer questions and solve critical management problems.

Paper 2 – Unseen Stimulus Material (SL and HL)
Paper 2 presents students with fully unseen stimulus material using a combination of written text, charts, and infographics. The stimulus material is presented in parts. You must read a section, answer its corresponding question, and then move to the next part. Section A of Paper 2 consists of short case studies related to topics such as marketing, human resources, etc. For SL students, Section B may feature a social enterprise case study, whereas HL students are evaluated on that separately in Paper 3.
Paper 3 – The Social Enterprise Focus (HL Only)
Paper 3 is an HL-only requirement with a longer case study based on a social enterprise. Students are provided with a short introduction to a business, a visual product representation, and five or six document excerpts, such as emails or media feeds. Students will use the case study to identify and describe a human need, explain the organizational challenges facing the business, and write a formal decision-making document containing a strategic business recommendation.
The Student-Led Case Study - The Internal Assessment
The most extensive application of case studies occurs within the Internal Assessment (IA). In this component, the student conducts a unique business research project by identifying a real, contemporary issue facing a business. The IA essentially acts as an extended case study where students focus their investigation through a single conceptual lens and select three to five supporting documents, such as press articles, financial reports, or interview transcripts, published within the past three years. The resulting 1,800-word analytical paper requires the student to integrate this data, run it through the business toolkit, and write an evaluation that directly answers their chosen research question.
How to Analyze a Case Study Effectively
To secure the highest grade, your analysis must focus on the four-step evaluation method aligned with the IB Assessment Objectives (AOs):

Deploy the Toolkit (AO4 Skills) – Never analyze a case using vague concepts. Integrate tools from the business management toolkit, such as a SWOT analysis, STEEPLE analysis, Ansoff matrix, or decision trees, to explicitly support your research and evaluate the syllabus content.

Balance Your Arguments (AO3 Evaluation) – The IB heavily rewards synthesis and evaluation. For the extended response questions, you must provide balanced arguments that explain the limitations of the stimulus material or consider the trade-offs between different business functions.

Effectively Use Evidence (AO2 Application) – Ground your arguments directly in the data from the case studies. You must select and use appropriate information from the provided text to effectively support your statements, rather than superficially repeating the names of characters or organizations.

Use a Conceptual Lens – For your Internal Assessment project, you must take real-world corporate data and filter your entire case analysis through one of the four key concepts: Change, Creativity, Ethics, or Sustainability.

Ultimately, IB Business and Management case studies are not looking for a single "correct" answer. Instead, the examiners want to see a logical, evidence-backed evaluation proving you can navigate challenges and confidently plot a path forward for the business. We hope you found this post helpful in learning about IB Business and Management case studies.
