Biology

Is your biology IA topic selected but you are unsure how to begin the writing process? Fear not, as Clastify is here to help guide you step-by-step on how to write your IA. In this post, we will give you key tips on what to include in each section of your IA, based on our experience with IB. Although we recommend this structure based on our successful history of helping students receive top-rated IAs, feel free to personalize the guide below in whatever manner suits you! This post covers the new Science IA syllabus starting from the May 2025 exam session. A top-scoring IA should be easy to read, have a good flow between topics, and be well-focused. The guide below is just an example of how a good IA should be structured, however, keep in mind that many high-scoring IAs may also use other structures. For examples of some well-structured IAs, head to the Clastify website where you can read through multiple exemplar IAs!

Biology IA Format and Structure
The guide will be broken up by section to help you better understand what is required in each part of the IA and will have examples linked (in blue), as follows:
Introduction:

Include a brief overview of the topic and its importance - what is the organism/compound being studied? Where/how is it used? What is being used to react with the organism (if applicable)?

State the personal or global significance of the topic - what made you choose this and why is it an important topic to investigate?

Briefly introduce the reaction used in the experiment and state why this is the most appropriate method to use for the experiment (for example, why is sugar solution/ethanol/citric acid used for the respective experiment).

The introduction should be around 0.5 - 1 page.

Example: This IA has a good introduction since it briefly introduces the topic of measuring the fermentation of amakaze when different pH levels and concentrations of koji are used. This introduces the main compound being studied, how it is used, and its global significance as a health food. It also discusses the main reaction used which is fermentation over time, and the introduction is around 1 page long.

Research question:

State the main research question of the experiment including the independent and dependent variables.

Make sure to include units for the independent and dependent variables.

Include how the dependent variable will be quantified and measured (instrument name or method). Explain why this instrument or method is best for the respective dependent variable.

An example research question should look like this: "To what extent does increasing ethanol concentration (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 mol/L) affect cell membrane permeability (in milligrams), as measured using a Vernier Colorimeter?"

Example: This IA has a good research question as it clearly states the research question, units of the independent and dependent variables, and the method by which the results will be measured.

Background information:

Describe the structure of the main compound being analyzed. Talk about what properties of the molecule make it suitable for the method of analysis used.

If you are studying an organism instead, describe the features of the organism that make it suitable for analysis by the chosen method (eg: why are cell membranes susceptible to ethanol?).

If the molecule is something that is able to be consumed (eg; capsaicin, vitamin C) describe the effects of this molecule on the body. What are the pros and cons of having too much or too little of this compound in the body?

Discuss the reagent being used to react with the main molecule (eg: hydrogen peroxide used in germination). What aspects of its structure or reactivity make it a suitable reagent to use for your experiment?

Include any equations that are relevant to the chemical reactions that will occur during the experiment (if applicable).

You should justify why the respective method of analysis was chosen for this experiment, for example, why is fermentation and measuring the volume of carbon dioxide produced a suitable means of measuring the dependent variable for a reaction?

If the research is based on secondary data, you should explain the selection of the database used and the method of data sampling used in the secondary data. Explain why this particular database interests you and why it is relevant to answering the posed research question.

All the background information included should be directly focused on the research question. For example for fermentation reactions, you can briefly talk about types of sugars and where they are found, but don't spend more than a few sentences discussing that rather than the biology behind the experiment.

Include relevant diagrams if applicable. Don't forget to provide a figure caption and cite the source of the diagram.

Include in-text citations throughout the background information section.

Example: This IA has good background information since it introduces the main organism being studied as well as what makes it suitable for the study (fast growth rate). It also talks about the importance of iron to duckweed and the disadvantages of an iron deficiency or excess iron on plant growth, which is directly focused on the main idea of the essay.

CAROUSEL

Variables:

Include the independent variable and units. Describe why the range of independent variables was chosen. For example, why was the concentration chosen as 0.1-2M instead of 1-5M? You should justify why you have chosen specific values over others.

Include the dependent variable, units, instrument/method with which it will be measured, and the uncertainty. For example for fermentation, you could write "Dependent variable: Amount of Vitamin CO2 produced in cm3, measured using a gas syringe (±0.1 cm3)".

Add a table of control variables, including how each variable is controlled and why it is controlled.

Example: This IA has a good variables section since the independent variable is clearly stated along with how it will be controlled, the dependent variable is stated with its units and how it will be measured, and a table of control variables is present that states why and how each variable will be controlled.

Equipment:

Create a list of all the apparatus and equipment used in the experiment.

Ensure to include uncertainties for all relevant instruments (eg: pipettes, beakers, weighing balances, etc).

Include the concentrations of all standard solutions used (eg: 2 M ethanol).

Include a labelled image of the experimental setup (however you could also include an image in the method section).

Example: All glassware and equipment are stated with their uncertainties, and all chemicals are stated with their amounts used.

Method:

Write down each step of the method exactly as it was performed in the lab.

Use a narrative tone when writing the method and not a first-person tone. For example, you should write "Prepare a solution of ....." rather than writing "I prepared a solution of......".

Include a risk assessment table at the end of the method, outlining the safety, ethical and environmental concerns of the experiment.

Example: All steps of the method are accurately noted down in the narrative tone and no first-person voice has been used. A risk assessment section has been included at the end which accounts for safety, ethical and environmental concerns.

Results:

Include a table of the processed data from the experiment. Include a number and caption for the table and ensure the data is centred in the cells.

Add a section for qualitative data if applicable (eg: colour changes, temperature changes).

Ensure all data in tables has the appropriate number of significant figures and decimal places.

Include a sample equation and calculation showing how the data is processed. Do this for each type of calculation used (eg: calculating averages, calculating the volume of CO2 released, etc).

Place the rest of the processed data in a new processed data table. Include a number and caption for the table and ensure the data is centred in the cells.

Include a sample calculation for the propagation of uncertainties, and place the rest of the uncertainties for the other values in a table with a caption. After calculating the uncertainties, include a description of what they mean in relation to the data. Is the uncertainty small or large? What does this mean about the error and validity of the results?

Include a graph of the processed data versus the independent variable. Include a graph title, axis titles and units, and provide a figure caption for the graph. Include a paragraph below the graph describing the trends in the data such as the correlation if linear (positive or negative) and the R^2 value.

Example: A table of qualitative data, raw data and processed data has been included. All tables have a number and figure caption. Sample calculations are shown for each type of equation used. An appropriate graph has been included as well as appropriate statistical analyses.

Conclusion:

State the aim of the experiment to refresh the reader's memory.

Discuss the trends in the graph and how they correspond to the research question.

Use experimental values from the analysis section in the conclusion. For example, instead of just saying the volume of CO2 produced increased with temperature, you could say the volume of CO2 increased from 10.3 cm3 at 20 degrees Celcius to 50.7 cm3 at 60 degrees Celcius.

Discuss the extent to which the research question was answered - was it answered fully or only partially?

Discuss the R^2 value of the graph (if the data is linear) and how it describes the strength of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.

Describe if there are any anomalies in the data, and give reasons as to why these may have occurred.

Compare your experimental values to literature values (if applicable) to strengthen your conclusion. Include in-text citations for the literature source.

Discuss the impact of uncertainties - were they a significant amount of the experimental values? (For example, 10g ± 0.01g is more acceptable than 10g ± 1g)

Example: The conclusion clearly re-states the aim of the essay, as well as a statement to which the research question has been answered (results support the hypothesis). Graphical trends and uncertainties are discussed in relation to the research question, such as the relationship between the variables. The reliability of the data was also discussed.

Evaluation:

Critically evaluate the results of the experiment and how they could be improved.

Include a list of the strengths of the experiment and the significance of each strength.

Include a table of the weaknesses of the experiment, as well as how they impacted the results and how to improve this in future.

Make sure to account for random, systematic and human errors in the experiment, how they affected the data, and how this can be corrected in future.

Finally, provide some extensions for the experiment. These should be some topics that relate to or build off the main topic. For example, for the analysis of the effects of ethanol on cell membranes, you could say how in future you could measure how other alcohols such as methanol, propanol, etc. could affect cell membranes. You could also discuss what would happen if some of the control variables of the experiment were used as the dependent variables instead.

Example: A comprehensive list of strengths and weaknesses is included, along with considerations for random, systematic and human error. Multiple extensions have also been provided for the experiment.

References:

Include a full list of all the references used in the IA.

Ensure the bibliography is in the same citation style used in the introduction and background information section.

Example: A full reference list has been included and is in the same citation style as used in the introduction and background information sections.

We hope this guide helps guide you in properly formatting and structuring your Biology IA! Biology EE Format and Structure

Are you currently writing your Biology EE? Don't worry, we are here to help you write an Extended Essay that will meet the new IB assessment criteria for first assessment in 2027. Keep reading for our suggestions based on the official IB EE rubric!
Biology EE Criteria and Checklist

You can receive as many as 30 points for your extended essay based on the following criteria:
Criterion A: Framework for the essay - 6 points

This criterion evaluates whether your research question, chosen research methods, and structural conventions create an effective foundation for your biology investigation. Your framework must be grounded in scientific methodology, typically involving the development of relevant hypotheses and replicable data collection. You must explain the suitability of your specific tools and procedures, ensuring they allow for a controlled investigation where independent and dependent variables are clearly defined. The structure should follow standard scientific conventions, including appropriately labelled tables and figures that facilitate the clear communication of your research findings. For a maximum of 6 points:

Formulate your research question as a precise, focused question rather than a statement.

Explicitly define and justify all investigated biological variables, including units and specific concentrations or time periods.

Provide a methodology detailed enough to allow another researcher to replicate your entire experimental process exactly.

Use a table of contents and clear, informative headings to organize your essay into logical sections.

Ensure all diagrams and graphs are numbered, captioned, and appropriately referenced within the body of your text.

A good example can be seen here.
Criterion B: Knowledge and understanding - 6 points

To score well here, you must demonstrate a deep grasp of the biological subject matter and the wider academic context of your research. This involves the accurate and consistent application of subject-specific terminology to show you understand the underlying processes. You are expected to use relevant research materials, which include peer-reviewed scientific publications and established databases. Your understanding is also shown through the effective use of key concepts to frame your investigation. For a maximum of 6 points:

Integrate relevant biological terminology consistently throughout your writing.

Explain the underlying biological processes and theories that govern your topic.

Reference current, peer-reviewed scientific literature to establish the wider disciplinary context of your specific research question.

Apply the International System of Units (SI) correctly and consistently for all measurements and data points.

Avoid over-quoting; instead, synthesize information from sources into your own academic voice to demonstrate personal understanding.

Click here to read an EE that does this well.
Criterion C: Analysis and line of argument - 6 points

This criterion focuses on your ability to break down biological data into essential elements to reach relevant findings. Your essay must maintain a clear, sustained line of argument that logically connects your research question to your data analysis and conclusions. If so this guide is just for you! Check it out to get familiar with the topic of this internal assessment and boost your chances of writing a great report. Biology IA is a scientific investigation that should take up to 3,000 words. There is no page limit. It is recommended to use a 12-point font with double spacing. The basic structure includes an introduction, main body, and conclusion, which can be further subdivided. The report requires a purposeful research question based on which students conduct the investigation.
Introduction
Start your essay by presenting the research question and the context of your study. Present and justify your hypothesis based on the theory you’ve learned. Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the topic by providing definitions and characteristics of the species, reactions, phenomena, etc. which are subject to your study. Make sure that you are using specific biological terminology in an appropriate context and that you demonstrate personal engagement. You need to show evidence of initiative and input in conducting the research, it is also good to underline the report's association with one’s areas of interest. The introduction should be around 500 words. See this exemplar with a well-developed introduction.
Main body
The main body covers your investigation and analysis. Biology IA Topic Ideas + Examples

Crafting a clear and thoughtful conclusion for your IB Biology IA is crucial for achieving a high score. In this section, you should summarize your main findings, interpret the results using relevant biological concepts, and discuss any uncertainties in your investigation. Essentially, the conclusion condenses and communicates your experimental outcomes effectively to the examiner. This post will highlight important tips to consider when writing your Biology IA conclusion.
IB Biology IA Conclusion

Restate the aim
Begin your conclusion by briefly restating the aim of your experiment. This reminds the reader of the focus and purpose of your investigation. Keep it concise but specific, mentioning the independent and dependent variables. This sets the context for interpreting your findings and evaluating how effectively your investigation addressed its main objective. For a good example of this, click here.
Discuss graphical trends
Summarize the key trends or patterns observed in your graphs and explain how these relate to your research question. Describe whether the relationship was linear, exponential, or inverse, and link this trend to the theoretical expectations. Showing how your graphical data supports or challenges the expected biology principle strengthens your analytical depth and shows that you can critically analyze the results of your experiment. A good example can be seen here.
Discuss the R2 value
If your data is linear, mention the R² value from your graph and interpret what it indicates about the strength of the correlation between variables. A value close to 1 suggests a good linear fit and strong correlation between variables, while a lower value indicates a weak correlation. Explaining the R2 value shows how well your experimental data supports theoretical expectations. For example, if linear results are expected and you get a high R2 value, you can explain that your data is reliable. However, if there is a weak correlation due to a low R2 value, you can explain what may have caused it. A good explanation of the R2 value can be read here.
Discuss statistical test results
<article class="text-token-text-primary w-full focus:outline-none [--shadow-height:45px] has-data-writing-block:pointer-events-none has-data-writing-block:-mt-(--shadow-height) has-data-writing-block:pt-(--shadow-height) [&:has([data-writing-block])>*]:pointer-events-auto [content-visibility:auto] supports-[content-visibility:auto]:[contain-intrinsic-size:auto_100lvh] scroll-mt-[calc(var(--header-height)+min(200px,max(70px,20svh)))]" tabindex="-1" dir="auto" data-turn-id="request-WEB:393d8260-427e-44b1-a4df-d364206d1e1e-12" data-testid="conversation-turn-26" data-scroll-anchor="true" data-turn="assistant">

In your conclusion, you should interpret statistical results (e.g. ANOVA, p-values, t-values, f-values) to evaluate whether the differences between groups or relationships between variables are statistically significant. Explain what these results reveal about the reliability of your data and whether they support or reject your hypothesis. For example, a p-value below 0.05 usually indicates significant results with a low probability of having occurred by chance. A good example of this can be seen here and here.

Use experimental values
Refer directly to numerical data or calculated results to make your conclusion evidence-based. For example, instead of general statements (e.g. The volume of CO2 produced increased with temperature), use specific values to demonstrate your findings (e.g. The volume of CO2 increased from 10.3 cm³ at 20 ºC to 50.7 cm³ at 60 ºC). This adds precision and specificity to your interpretation and demonstrates that your claims are supported by data rather than vague observations or assumptions. This also shows that you can critically evaluate which numerical values are important and should be highlighted against the rest. A good example can be found here.
Discuss the extent to which the research question was answered
Evaluate whether your investigation fully or only partially addressed the research question. Reflect on how well your data supports your conclusion and whether any limitations prevented complete resolutions to your investigations. If the research question was only partially answered, explain why and discuss what could have been done to result in a fully answered research question.
Describe and explain anomalies or deviations from expected results
Describe whether your results follow the expected trends or not. If your results differ from the expected trends, suggest reasonable explanations for these deviations, such as measurement inaccuracies, uncontrolled environmental conditions, variation in biological samples, or limitations in experimental equipment. Note that these issues may be briefly stated in the conclusion, but should be thoroughly explained later in the evaluation. A good discussion of a deviation from expected results can be found here.
Compare experimental and literature values
Compare your measured or calculated values with accepted theoretical or literature values to assess the accuracy of your results. Discuss how closely your results align (i.e. if the values are in a similar range) and provide explanations for any discrepancies. This comparison of experimental and literature values will help validate your findings and provide an accredited scientific benchmark for evaluating your experiment's results. A good example of this is present here.
Discuss the impact of uncertainties
Evaluate how measurement uncertainties affected your results. Determine whether they were relatively small or large compared to the measured values. For example, in a Biology IA investigating enzyme activity, a reaction rate of 12.5 μmol/min ± 0.1 μmol/min indicates high precision and consistent results, whereas 12.5 μmol/min ± 2.0 μmol/min suggests lower precision and greater uncertainty in the data. Analyzing the significance of uncertainties shows your understanding of the reliability of your experimental results. A good example of an uncertainty discussion can be seen in this exemplar. We hope this post has helped you learn more about how to write an IB Biology IA conclusion. IB Biology IA Conclusion

The process of writing the Biology Internal Assessment can be challenging, especially when trying to fit into the official grading criteria. There is room for making a broad range of mistakes, fortunately, most of them can be avoided either in the design, writing, or review stage of creating your IA. From refining research questions and hypotheses to improving data analysis, this guide aims to help you navigate these pitfalls, ensuring that you score top marks for your Internal Assessment
Top 10 mistakes in Biology IA

Poor data analysis: Data analysis is a necessary element of identifying significant relationships from your results. This involves conducting calculations, which should always be included (even if they involve relatively simple operations like obtaining the mean), as well as presenting the processed data tables and graphs. In the case of Biology IA, it is also necessary to run a statistical test, which should be chosen according to the type of data that you collected. Here you may find an excellent example of complete data analysis.

Poor Communication: The criterion E, Communication, is mostly concerned with the presentation of the work. Although it might seem like a collection of insignificant details, it still represents about ⅙ of the mark scheme. Before submitting your work, check if your pages are numbered, the table content is centred, and the text is justified. This is an excellent example of a well-presented IA.

Incomplete evaluation: Most students include some kind of evaluation of their work; however, it is often incomplete. Always remember that a comprehensive evaluation section includes a discussion of both the weaknesses and strengths of the study, as well as an analysis of how different sources of error could have impacted the final results. Sometimes, structuring this section in a table form will improve the clarity of the presentation. Check this one to see a good evaluation section.

Not including enough trials: Repetitions of the experiment are crucial to ensure that the results are significant and the study is replicable (in other words, your findings are not coincidental and represent a valid relationship between your independent and dependent variables). Although some teachers advise conducting at least 3 trials, in most cases 5 trials will be ideal. Take a look on this IA to get a more detailed information.

Too large (or too small) background info section: Background information cannot be either limited or irrelevant. Make sure that the introduction addresses all of the elements of your research question, like independent and dependent variables, as well as the studied organism and process. At the same time, omit the information that does not improve the understanding of your experiment, for example, an extensive description of the brewing industry when writing an IA on yeast fermentation. Here you have a perfect example of properly done Background Information.

CAROUSEL

Lack of uncertainty consideration: The correct analysis of the work involves not only the identification of major methodological and human errors, but also the consideration of an unavoidable limitation - the uncertainty of the measuring equipment. To ensure that the criterion is fully satisfied, calculate the total percentage uncertainty of the results and evaluate its impact on the reliability of the findings (it might be helpful to compare the obtained value to the percentage error if literature values for the investigated reactions are available). This is uncertainty consideration you should be looking for.

Stating only the alternative hypothesis: In the case of Biology IA, it is necessary to state both null and alternative hypotheses. The null hypothesis will claim that your independent variable does not impact the dependent variable, whereas the alternative hypothesis is the one that states that there exists a relationship between them. This is necessary, as the statistical tests work by disproving the null hypothesis. Proper hypothesis in this example.

Unfocused research question: Most students will include a research question in their work, however, it is often incomplete. A correct research question will involve the specification of the independent and dependent variables together with the method and unit of measuring, as well as the name of the species on which the investigation is conducted. Perfectly executed RQ to be seen here.

Lack of reference to the results in the conclusion: The conclusion must always directly follow from the results of the experiment, hence it needs to directly refer to them. This is best achieved by quoting specific data points, like percentage change, smallest and highest values from the graphs, or results of the statistical analysis. In this exemplar you can see a well structued conclusion with references.

Not labeling the sources of error: It is not enough to include errors from the study, they must also be properly classified. In the case of Biology IA, the sources of error should be divided into methodological, which are connected with the limitations of the equipment and the design of the experiment, and human error, reflecting the defects of the observer’s perception (like incorrect reading of the measuring equipment). See how errors are presented in this IA.

We hope you found this post helpful. A comprehensive guide on the top 10 mistakes in Biology Internal Investigation

Top 10 mistakes in Biology IA

Considering IB Biology for your science course but unsure if it's the right fit? If you're weighing your options and wondering whether IB Biology might be challenging, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know to make an informed decision.
How hard is IB Biology?

How hard is IB Biology?
IB Biology often appears challenging when looking at statistics. The mean grade for SL Biology students is around 3.7, while HL students average 4.6—scores that fall slightly below those in other sciences like Physics, where SL students average 3.8 and HL students 5.1. At a glance, this might suggest that IB Biology is particularly tough, even more so than Physics. However, it’s essential to interpret these numbers carefully, as they don’t always tell the whole story. In terms of difficulty, overall, IB Biology is a moderately challenging course. While it’s not as intense as Physics, which is often considered one of the hardest science options, it’s more challenging than subjects like ESS (Environmental Systems and Societies) or Sports Science. There is also a noteworthy difference between SL and HL Biology. The HL syllabus covers significantly more material, with greater depth and detail required, making it a more rigorous commitment. SL Biology, by comparison, is generally manageable and approachable, while HL Biology is regarded as a genuinely challenging course due to its extensive content.

What are some of the challenges of IB Biology?

The syllabus is very broad, requiring students to familiarise themselves with a very broad range of concepts.

Students are required to memorise and retain a very large amount of information.

IB Biology doesn’t just test memorization; students need a deep conceptual understanding of complex processes and the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations.

The course involves a large amount of scientific vocabulary and terminology, which can be difficult to remember.

With the vast amount of information to absorb, students often need to revisit topics regularly to retain what they've learned.

Who should consider doing IB Biology?
We believe that SL Biology is accessible to most students. While it does require commitment and dedication to master the content, it’s a manageable and approachable course. For students not planning to pursue a university degree in biology, medicine or other related course, SL Biology is a solid choice. However, if biology isn’t your area of interest and you’re seeking a less intensive science option, you might consider courses like Sports Science. It’s worth noting, though, that many universities view IB Biology as a more academically rigorous choice. For students with a strong interest in biology, or those considering a biology-related field at university, HL Biology is highly recommended. Many universities require HL Biology for programs in fields like biotechnology or medicine. This higher level of study not only meets entry requirements but also provides a solid foundation, giving you a head start in your university studies.

CAROUSEL

Tips for succeeding in IB Biology

Use flashcards – create flashcards for key terms, processes, and definitions to then be able to quickly revisit past topics. This will help you retain the vast amount of information through the entire course.

Draw the concepts out – Visual aids help in understanding complex biological processes. Practice drawing and labeling key diagrams, as these are often tested in exams.

Practice with past papers – familiarize yourself with the exam format and question styles by practicing past papers.

Practice data questions – practice analyzing graphs, charts, and data tables as these are a big part of the examination.

Think through your IA – choose a topic that interests you and ensure that your IA is well-structured, clear, and thorough. IB Biology Exam + Assessment

IB Biology is one of the most content-heavy subjects in the IB curriculum, which can make it quite challenging. In this post, we’ll however share some valuable tips to make studying easier and more effective for you.
How to study for IB Biology?

Engage in analytical studying
Don't just memorize everything mindlessly – focus on understanding how each concept or biological process actually works. Try to visualise it, follow the progression through different stages, and look for patterns, cause-and-effect relationships. This way, you'll retain the information much more easily, rather than just trying to memorise it without real understanding.

Use flashcards for revision
Flashcards are an excellent tool for revising IB Biology, as they allow you to quickly review key terms and concepts. The process of creating flashcards itself helps reinforce your learning, as it requires you to break down complex topics into simpler, more concise points. When reviewing them, try answering the question on the flashcard before flipping it over to check the answer. For the best results, each flashcard should focus on a single concept. You can create physical flashcards using just paper or use an online tool such as Anki which allows you to create virtual flashcards.

Use spaced repetition
Since IB Biology is an extremely content-heavy subject, it is crucial you employ study techniques that allow you to study more effectively and actually retain the information. Spaced repetition is one of the most effective methods for long-term retention. This technique involves reviewing material at gradually increasing intervals, which strengthens your memory and ensures that the information sticks in the long run. Initially, you'll review topics more frequently, but as you become more familiar with the content, the time between each review increases.
Prioritise understanding
In IB Biology, many exam questions do not simply require you to recall facts but instead ask you to approach concepts from different angles or apply them in new contexts. By focusing on understanding rather than pure memorisation, you will be better equipped to analyze and solve these types of questions. Developing a deep understanding of biological concepts allows you to make connections between topics and adapt your knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios.
Master the IB Biology command terms
IB Biology questions use specific command terms such as ''describe'', ''explain'', and ''evaluate''. Understanding what these terms mean and how to structure your responses accordingly is crucial for maximizing marks. Make sure to check out our IB Biology Command Terms post.

Make use of diagrams
Many biological concepts are best understood visually. Draw your own diagrams to represent processes such as photosynthesis, cellular respiration, and mitosis. Label them thoroughly and practice redrawing them from memory. Visual learning helps reinforce information and makes it easier to recall during exams.

CAROUSEL

Practice past papers
Solving past IB Biology papers is one of the most effective ways to prepare for exams. It helps you become familiar with the question format and the level of detail expected in responses. Practicing under timed conditions will also improve your time management skills. After completing past papers, compare your answers with the mark scheme to identify areas for improvement.

Review you class notes regularly
While practicing past papers is crucial, don’t neglect your class notes and textbooks. Regularly review these materials ensures that you have a strong grasp of the key concepts. You may also find our collection of IB Biology notes particularly useful.

Create concise revision notes
Summarizing topics into concise revision notes or bullet points can help you retain information more effectively. Organizing information in a clear, structured way makes it easier to review closer to exams. We hope you found this post helpful! A comprehensive guide to studying for IB Biology.

How to study for IB Biology?

The Evaluation section of your IB Biology IA showcases how effectively you can analyze and reflect on your investigation. In this part, you should assess the reliability of your findings, identify experimental strengths, pinpoint weaknesses, and suggest realistic improvements to the experiment. This post highlights some essential elements to consider when crafting an evaluation for your IB Biology IA.
IB Biology IA Evaluation

Highlight the strengths
A strengths section in the evaluation allows you to demonstrate aspects of the investigation that worked well. This may include well-controlled environmental conditions, reliable measurement tools, or an appropriate sample size. For example, an IA about enzymatic degradation could say, “Maintaining all test samples at a constant 25°C ensured that temperature did not influence enzyme activity, therefore increasing the reliability of the results.” Highlighting the strengths of your investigation shows awareness of what gave your results credibility and why your experimental method was scientifically sound. For a good example of how to highlight strengths, see this IA.
Explain the weaknesses and suggest improvements
Your evaluation should also address experimental limitations that reduced reliability or accuracy, and offer improvements to address them. You should avoid using vague statements like “human error affected the results” and should instead identify specific procedural or equipment-related issues. For example, an IA discussing how light intensity affects leaf transpiration could say, “A key weakness was variation in leaf thickness, which affected transpiration rates; using leaf discs of standardized mass would reduce this inconsistency.” Each weakness must identify a targeted improvement that would increase the precision or accuracy if the experiment were to be repeated in future. A good example can be seen here and here.
Discuss all types of errors
The discussion about experimental limitations should reflect random, systematic, and human errors wherever possible. You should explain how each type of error influenced your results. Random errors might arise from natural biological variability, while systematic errors may stem from instrument calibration issues or biased sample selection. For example, the evaluation for an IA about how pH affects bacterial growth could say, “A systematic error occurred because the pH probe had not been calibrated recently, consistently reading 0.1 units lower than actual values.” A thorough error discussion shows understanding of where uncertainty entered your experiment and how it affected your final results. A good example of when a student discussed various types of errors can be found here.
Provide some extensions to the experiment
Provide some extensions that demonstrate higher-level thinking by proposing broader applications related to your IA topic. These should build on your findings and explore related variables or improved methodologies. For example, an IA about exploring the effect of various alcohols on bacterial growth inhibition could say, “An extension could be to repeat the investigation with genetically distinct bacterial strains to determine whether the response pattern is conserved across populations.” Including thoughtful extensions shows that you understand the larger scientific context and can provide relevant ideas on how the research could be further explored. IB Biology IA Evaluation

Choosing between IB Biology and AP Biology is an important decision for students interested in medicine, nursing, life sciences, ecology, or health-related fields. While both courses are rigorous and widely recognized by universities, they differ in curriculum focus, assessment methods, and learning approach. This post will outline the differences between the two Biology courses to help you decide which one best suits your needs.
IB Biology vs AP Biology

Curriculum and structure
IB Biology is offered at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) within the IB Diploma Programme. The curriculum emphasizes conceptual understanding, systems thinking, and links between topics such as cell biology, genetics, metabolism, and ecology. AP Biology is a single, college-level course organized around major biological themes such as evolution, energy transfer, information storage, and interactions between systems, with strong emphasis on statistical tests and data analysis.
Assessment style
IB Biology assessment includes external exams and internal coursework. Students complete an Internal Assessment (IA), where they design and carry out an independent biological investigation, testing experimental skills, data processing, and evaluation. IB final exams include multiple-choice, data-based questions, short-answer and extended-response questions. AP Biology assessment relies primarily on a single final exam with multiple-choice and free-response questions. The AP Biology course does not have an equivalent report-style laboratory investigation like the IB Biology IA.
Practical and investigative skills
IB Biology places strong emphasis on hands-on experimental work, experimental design, and evaluation of methodology, uncertainties, and results. This approach develops strong scientific inquiry skills as students as expected to produce a 3000-word final lab report worth 20% of the course grade. AP Biology includes required labs, but they are generally structured and focused on reinforcing core concepts rather than independent research design.
Workload and time commitment
IB Biology, especially at HL, is often considered quite intensive as students need to balance completing the IA and laboratory practicals alongside studying for exams. AP Biology’s workload is concentrated on mastering content and exam practice, which may feel more manageable as students can focus their attention on studying for tests rather than on completing exams and lab reports alongside exam prep.
University recognition and credit
Both IB and AP Biology are widely accepted by universities. IB Biology HL is often viewed as particularly rigorous and may qualify for advanced standing or credit at many institutions worldwide. AP Biology can earn college credit in many North American universities, depending on the exam score, though credit policies vary by institution and program. Overall, the IB program holds more weight globally, while AP is more recognized in North America.
Which one should you choose?
IB Biology is ideal for students who enjoy research, lab work, and holistic learning. AP Biology may be better for students who prefer structured learning and intensive exam preparation. Your choice should depend on your learning style, future study plans, and overall academic workload manageability. We hope this post has helped you learn more about the differences between IB Biology and AP Biology. Whether you're unsure about which to choose or simply want to learn about how IB Biology and Chemistry vary, you've come to the right place. In this post we will provide you with a thorough comparison of the two to help you understand what to expect in each of the subjects.
IB Biology vs IB Chemistry

Difficulty
IB Biology and Chemistry are often regarded as some of the more challenging IB subjects, particularly at the Higher Level, where the difficulty increases significantly. Official IB exam statistics may suggest that IB Chemistry is the easier of the two. According to the May 2024 examination data, 29.5% of HL and 10.2% of SL Chemistry students achieve a grade 7, compared to just 13.8% of HL and 5.6% of SL Biology students. These statistics can however be very misleading. Just because a relatively high proportion of students achieve a perfect score does not necessarily mean that the subject is easier. It is important to keep in mind that IB Chemistry is often chosen by highly dedicated students who aim to pursue related fields at university level. In contrast, Biology is often chosen by students who may not wish to pursue science at the university level but need to fulfill the Group 4 science requirement. That said, IB Chemistry is generally perceived as slightly more difficult than IB Biology. This comparison, however, is subjective and heavily dependent on individual strengths. Some students declare IB Chemistry to be the tougher subject while other believe it is IB Biology. IB Chemistry involves mastering more complex concepts, whereas IB Biology demands a greater emphasis on memorization due to its extensive content. Ultimately, however, more students admit that IB Chemistry is the tougher subject.

Content
The content of IB Biology focuses on the study of living organisms, their structures, functions, and interactions with the environment. You'll cover topics such as cell biology, genetics, evolution, human anatomy, and ecosystems. The emphasis is on understanding biological processes and being able to explain phenomena through diagrams, extended responses, and data analysis. In contrast, IB Chemistry is centered around understanding the properties and interactions of matter at an atomic and molecular level. You'll explore subjects like stoichiometry, energetics, and organic chemistry. The course requires a solid grasp of equations, periodic trends, and chemical reactions. While Biology leans more toward descriptive learning and memorization, Chemistry demands a stronger foundation in mathematics and problem-solving. Both subjects however place significant importance on experimental skills and understanding as well as data analysis. During both courses you will conduct experiments, analyze results, write lab reports, and evaluate scientific methodologies.

The challenges of IB Biology and IB Chemistry
IB Biology

The syllabus is very broad, requiring students to familiarise themselves with a very broad range of concepts.

Students are required to memorise and retain a very large amount of information.

IB Biology doesn’t just test memorization; students need a deep conceptual understanding of complex processes and the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar situations.

The course involves a large amount of scientific vocabulary and terminology, which can be difficult to remember.

With the vast amount of information to absorb, students often need to revisit topics regularly to retain what they've learned.

IB Chemistry

The subject, especially at HL, requires proficient mathematical skills.

Students must memorise various chemical concepts and be able to then apply them in unfamiliar contexts.

In IB Chemistry many topics build upon each other, so gaps in understanding earlier concepts can create difficulties later in the course.

Many concepts are abstract and require imaginative thinking to understand. This strong emphasis on theory can make it difficult for students to visualise the required concepts.

Juggling a mix of memorization, practical work, and conceptual understanding can be challenging for many students.

CAROUSEL

Who should consider doing IB Biology and/or IB Chemistry?
Students who wish to pursue medicine or other related courses at university are advised to choose both IB Biology and Chemistry at HL as it not only will provide them with a solid foundation for university studies but is also a requirement at many universities. If you however want to choose only one of the two, we advise considering your own strengths. If you don't mind memorising large amounts of information and enjoy detailed content IB Biology may be the better fit. On the other hand, if you prefer problem-solving and applying concepts in unseen contexts, IB Chemistry is likely the better choice. We hope you found this post helpful. IB Biology vs IB Chemistry

The most difficult part of every writing process? Starting. Planning your Internal Assessment in Biology can quickly become daunting, especially if it’s your first time writing a longer investigation. But don’t worry - we’ve got you covered with a list of the first steps of designing your IA. Here are the 5 of them to quickly start writing your Biology IA.
5 steps to jumpstart writing your Biology IA

Think about the topic of your investigation: The topic of your investigation will impact every part of your writing process. However, choosing it might be difficult, as there are numerous factors to take into consideration. Here are the most important ones:

Manageability: This broad category encompasses the knowledge and skills you possess, ethical considerations, as well as resources you possess and time restraints. For example, although you might be very interested in neurobiology, studying the expression of genes in brain tissue would involve using fluorescence microscopy, available only in select biotechnological laboratories. Additionally, it would raise ethical issues, as conducting an investigation on animals requires advanced training and often obtaining special permits. The last two elements are described below. To sum it up, try to design an experiment with which you are at least to a certain degree familiar and carefully examine what kind of organism you can conduct your study on.

Personal interest (and global significance): It is best if you choose a topic that actually interests you, as this maximizes your motivation for designing and conducting the study. However, it is crucial to find balance, as even the most engaging topic can become daunting if it is too challenging in terms of difficulty or the engagement of your resources. One of the most effective combinations is choosing a manageable investigation topic that involves design choices that are in line with your interests and hold personal significance. For example, you can investigate the rate of yeast fermentation, however using a specific strain that is used only in local breweries. It is also advisable to present the global significance of your topic, for example, how physiological drought impacts the farming industry on saline soils.

Initiative in designing the study: When browsing through exemplars of IAs, you may come under the impression that “everything has already been done”. While it is true that numerous topics are repeated by students from year to year, you can improve your work by including an element of innovation in the design of your investigation. For example, try conducting a preliminary trial to finetune the range of your independent variable or use a slightly unobvious measurement method, for example measuring the dry mass of the root instead of the length of the seedling in germination experiments.

And you can see a perfect example of a well-structured topic here.

CAROUSEL

Consider your resources: Despite our best efforts, high school investigations are often limited by the varying access to different resources. Before confirming your choice of topic, you should evaluate:

Time: This is particularly within biology, as investigations on living organisms can take days, weeks, or even months. For example, most seeds will germinate within a few days, but the study of flowering or fruit development would involve months to even reach that stage of the life cycle of a plant. Even theoretical investigations involve an extensive research process and finding the most reliable data sources. This is why it is crucial to start your investigation early to prevent you from being left with restricted options. If your chosen topic cannot be realized within a certain timeframe that is left to your deadline, consider pivoting to a more manageable investigation.

Place: Consider where you will conduct your investigation - at home, in a school laboratory, or at an external institution. Your choice will heavily impact what kinds of experiments you can conduct. For example, theoretical investigations or the study of the germination of the plants can be done exclusively at home, application of precise weighing scales and most investigations of the rate of reactions will necessitate using school lab equipment, whereas professional machines like spectrophotometers in most cases require contact with professional or university laboratories.

Equipment: This ties in closely with the previous point. If you choose to use the school laboratory, do an inventory of the equipment that is available (and working). For biology investigation, you might be interested in weighing scales, precise calipers, data loggers, and others. You may also ask upper-grade students what they used for their investigation, which might also help you prevent any systematic errors in case of faulty equipment. There is a high chance that you may need to purchase additional materials, however, to limit costs (reagents and electronic devices can be quite expensive), focus on what is already available to you.

A great example of a well-proceeded experiment is to be seen in this IA.

Do extensive background research: Even the best ideas for investigations may need revision when confronted with the scientific literature. Firstly, use search engines like Google Scholar to search for keywords relevant for your investigation, for example, “antibiotics growth inhibition zone” or “drought germination”. Try to make a list of 10-20 relevant publications and save it for later, it will come in handy when doing the referencing. Your background research will help you in many ways, from applying a realistic range of the independent variables (like concentrations of experimental solutions) to finding if there is any rationale behind the independent variable potentially impacting the dependent.

And again, to see well-described Background Information, head over to Clastify to see this exemplar.

Formulate your research question, hypotheses, and methodology: You’ve got an interesting yet manageable topic. Great, now it’s time to design your research question. It should involve both the independent and dependent variables, the units as well as the method by which they will be measured, and the organism on which the investigation will be conducted. The hypotheses should be formulated as null (implying a lack of any connection between the independent and dependent variables) and alternative (stating that there is a relationship between the variables. Finally, write out a step-by-step guide for yourself that includes all steps of the experiment together with the variables that you will need to control.

A great example of all of the above is here.

Make a schedule for your investigation… and start working: With the topic, research question, and methodology all ready, you can start your investigation! It’s best to make a plan on what parts of the experiment you will tackle each day or week, as well as plan on what times you will record your data, if the study requires continuous monitoring (for example, study of the growth of plants). The final deadlines will probably be imposed on you by your teachers, nevertheless, it is prudent to set your own schedule that will leave room for potential mistakes and delays (which inevitably happen). And now, it’s time to start!

Considering these 5 elements of the design of your IA will prevent many methodological errors during the practical stage of conducting your investigation, as well as prevent your topic from being unfocused, unmanageable, or completely uninteresting. A comprehensive guide on how to start writing a Biology Internal Assessment

How to start writing the Biology IA

Choosing between IB Biology and A-level Biology is an important decision for students interested in medicine, nursing, biomedical science or other life science-related fields. While both qualifications are academically demanding and widely recognized by universities, they differ in their course structures, assessment styles, and approaches to practical and investigative learning. This post outlines the key differences between the two Biology pathways to help you decide which option best fits your goals.
IB Biology vs A-level Biology

Curriculum and structure
IB Biology is offered at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) as part of the IB Diploma Programme. The course is designed to develop conceptual understanding of biological systems alongside scientific inquiry and data analysis. Students who choose HL Biology study additional topics and explore biological processes in greater depth compared with SL students. A-level Biology is typically studied over two years in the UK and many international school systems. It is awarded through examination boards such as AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel, and Cambridge Assessment International Education (CIE). Unlike IB, there is no SL or HL pathway, and all students follow a single syllabus. Both IB and A-level Biology cover core topics such as cell biology, enzymes, genetics, metabolism, ecology, evolution, and human physiology.
Assessment style
One of the main differences between IB Biology and A-level Biology is how students are assessed. In IB Biology, students are evaluated through a combination of external written examinations and internal coursework. A key component of this coursework is the Internal Assessment (IA), which is an individual experimental investigation designed by the student. The IA assesses experimental design, data processing, and evaluation skills and contributes 20% of the final grade. IB Biology examinations include multiple-choice questions, short-answer and data-based questions, and extended-response questions that assess both conceptual understanding and scientific reasoning. A-level Biology is primarily assessed through final written examinations at the end of the course. While students complete a range of required practical activities during the programme, they do not submit an extended independent investigation like the IB IA. Instead, practical skills are assessed through exam questions and, in many cases, through a separate practical endorsement confirming that students have demonstrated specific laboratory competencies. The requirement for the lab exam depends on which exam board the student is taking the A-level Biology course with (e.g. CIE, AQA, etc.).
Practical and investigative skills
IB Biology places strong emphasis on scientific investigation and inquiry. Students are expected to design experiments, control variables, analyse uncertainty, and evaluate the reliability and limitations of their results. This approach helps students develop independent research and critical-thinking skills that closely resemble first-year university laboratory expectations. In A-level Biology, practical work is also an essential part of the course, but it is generally more structured and teacher-led. Experiments are mainly used to support theoretical understanding and prepare students for exam-style questions, rather than to develop independent experimental design skills to the same extent as in IB Biology.
Workload and time commitment
IB Biology, particularly at HL, can feel demanding because students must balance regular laboratory work, completion of the IA, and preparation for multiple examination papers. Students also need to manage this workload alongside their other IB subjects, making time management especially important. A-level Biology typically involves a more exam-focused workload. Students spend most of their time learning content, practising data-handling and application questions, and preparing for structured assessments. Many students find this style more straightforward, as there is less extended written coursework to manage.
University recognition
Both IB Biology and A-level Biology are widely recognized by universities. IB Biology HL is often viewed as particularly rigorous and is commonly recommended for competitive programmes in medicine, nursing, and life sciences. A-level Biology is also highly respected, especially in the UK and Commonwealth systems, and is a standard entry requirement for many biology- and health-related degrees.
Which one should you choose?
IB Biology is well-suited to students who enjoy experimentation, independent investigation, and a balanced assessment approach that values both practical and theoretical understanding. A-level Biology is better suited to students who prefer a more traditional, exam-driven structure with a strong focus on content mastery and data-based problem solving. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your learning style, academic strengths, and future university plans. We hope this post has helped clarify the differences between IB Biology and A-level Biology. IB Biology Grade Boundaries

Are you an IB Biology student who wants to secure that perfect 7? You're in the right place! In this post we will provide you with a list of insightful tips that will enable you to achieve this ambitious goal.
How to get a 7 in IB Biology
Revisit your notes – IB Biology is a highly content-heavy subject, and one of the best ways to succeed is to consistently review your notes and revisit topics to ensure you don’t forget what you’ve learned. With so much material to cover, it’s easy to lose track of older topics as you move on to new ones, so regular revision is essential to keep everything fresh in your mind. You don’t need to focus on every small detail during these reviews, instead, prioritize understanding the main concepts. This will help you prepare well for your final exams because it’s much easier to revise when you already have a baseline understanding of the material than it is to start from nothing. Regularly revisiting your notes allows you to build on what you already know, saving time and reducing stress. Solve exam questions – Many people think that IB Biology is purely about memorization, and while it’s true that memorizing key facts and concepts is an essential part of the subject, it’s equally important to develop strong application skills. The IB Biology exams don’t just test your ability to recall information but also the ability to apply what you’ve learned in unfamiliar contexts. This means interpreting data, analyzing graphs, and answering scenario-based questions that require critical thinking. To succeed, you need to practice solving past paper questions regularly. Practice under exam conditions – Remember to practice past papers in a setting that feels like the real exam. This means timing yourself and working without distractions, just as you would during the actual test. Doing this will help you get used to managing your time and answering questions under pressure. Plan your study sessions effectively – The IB Biology syllabus is extensive and covers a vast amount of material, so it’s crucial to spread your study sessions out evenly over time. Trying to cram all that information at the last minute can quickly become overwhelming and ineffective. Craft a strong IA – The IA makes up 20% of your final grade in IB Biology, so it’s an important part of the course. To do well, take the time to create a solid IA. Choose a topic that you find interesting and has room for insightful analysis. Make sure to follow a logical structure (introduction, methodology, data presentation, analysis, evaluation, and conclusion). Ask your teacher for feedback as you work so you can improve and fix any problems. You can also look at our sample Biology IAs for ideas and guidance.

CAROUSEL

Stick to the syllabus – The IB Biology syllabus is incredibly content-heavy, making it essential to focus on learning only what’s necessary for the exams. While IB Biology textbooks are valuable resources, they often include more information than the syllabus requires. Trying to memorize everything from the textbook will not only take up unnecessary time but also overload your brain with details that won’t be tested. To study effectively, always refer back to the syllabus while using the textbook, ensuring that you’re learning only the material outlined for the exam. Stay healthy and manage stress – IB Biology s a tough course that requires consistent effort over the entire program. To stay on track and avoid burnout, it’s important to look after your health. Get enough sleep, take time to relax, and focus on your well-being. We hope you found this post helpful.
