Have you got your Chemistry IA topic selected but are unsure how to begin the writing process? Do not worry, as Clastify is here to help guide you step-by-step on how to write your IA. In this post, we will give you key points on what to include in each section of your IA, based on our experience with IB. Although we recommend this structure based on our successful history of helping students receive top-rated IAs, feel free to personalize the guide below in a way that suits you! This post covers the new Science IA syllabus starting from the May 2025 exam session.

Chemistry IA Format and Structure
A top-scoring IA should be easy to read, have a good flow between topics, and be well-focused. The guide below is just an example of how a good IA should be structured, however, keep in mind that many high-scoring IAs may also use other structures. For examples of some well-structured IAs, head to the Clastify website where you can read through multiple exemplar IAs! The guide will be broken up by section to help you better understand what is required in each part of the IA and will have examples linked (in blue), as follows:
Introduction:

Include a brief overview of the topic and its importance - what is the compound being studied? Where/how is it used?

State the personal or global significance of the topic - what made you choose this and why is it an important topic to investigate?

Briefly introduce the main device or reaction used in the experiment and state why this is the most appropriate method to use for the experiment (for example, burette titration, UV spectroscopy, pH meter, iodometric titration, colourimetry, etc).

The introduction should be around 0.5 - 1 page.

Example: This IA has a good introduction since it briefly introduces the topic of a catalyst's effect on activation energy, as well as the global significance of the environmental uses of chemical catalysts. It also discusses the main reaction used which is a variation of the iodine clock experiment, and the introduction is around 0.5 pages long.

Research question:

State the main research question of the experiment including the independent and dependent variables.

Make sure to include units for the independent and dependent variables.

If the independent variable doesn't have units, for example when measuring the amount of a compound in different brands (eg: caffeine in different tea brands, vitamin C in different supplement brands), make sure to state all the names of the brands alongside the independent variable.

Include how the dependent variable will be quantified and measured (instrument name or method). Explain why this instrument or method is best for the respective dependent variable.

An example research question should look like this: "To what extent does the time that spinach is cooked (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 minutes) affect its Vitamin C content (in milligrams), as measured by an iodometric titration?"

Example: This IA has a good research question as it clearly states the research question, units of the dependent variables, and names of all the types of independent variables used (types of superfood) since the independent variable doesn't have units.

CAROUSEL

Background information:

Describe the structure of the main molecule being analyzed. Talk about what properties of the molecule (polarity, functional groups, etc.) make it suitable for the method of analysis used.

If the molecule is something that is able to be consumed (eg; caffeine, vitamin C) describe the effects of this molecule on the body. What are the pros and cons of having too much or too little of this compound in the body?

Discuss the reagent being used to react with the main molecule (eg: dichloromethane used in caffeine extraction, iodine and starch used in vitamin C analysis). What aspects of its structure or reactivity make it a suitable reagent to use for your experiment?

Include any equations that are relevant to the chemical reactions that will occur during the experiment.

All the background information included should be directly focused on the research question. For example for vitamin C analysis, you can briefly mention how it is found in citrus fruits, but don't spend more than 3-4 sentences talking about fruit rather than the chemistry behind the experiment.

Include relevant diagrams if applicable. Don't forget to provide a figure caption and cite the source of the diagram.

Include in-text citations throughout the background information section.

Example: This IA has good background information since it describes the chemistry behind the main reaction (iodine clock reaction) well, and provides the relevant equations for the reactions occurring. It includes relevant diagrams such as the Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution and the Arrhenius graph. The background information section is directly focused on the research question and contains in-text citations where applicable.

Variables:

Include the independent variable and units. Describe why the range of independent variables was chosen. For example, why was the concentration of acid chosen as 0.1-32 M instead of 1-5M? You should justify why you have chosen specific values over others.

Include the dependent variable, units, instrument with which it will be measured, and the uncertainty. For example, in vitamin C analysis you could write "Dependent variable: Amount of Vitamin C in grams, measured using a weighing balance (±0.01 g)".

Add a table of control variables, including how each variable is controlled and why it is controlled.

Example: This IA has a good variables section since the independent variable is clearly stated with its units and how it will be controlled, the dependent variable is stated with its units and how it will be measured, and a table of control variables is present that stated why and how each variable will be controlled.

Equipment:

Create a list of all the apparatus and equipment used in the experiment.

Ensure to include uncertainties for all relevant instruments (eg: pipettes, burettes, weighing balances, etc).

Include the concentrations of all standard solutions used.

Include a labelled image of the experimental setup (however you could also include an image in the method section).

Example: All glassware and equipment are stated with their uncertainties, and all chemicals are stated with their concentrations or pH.

Method:

Write down each step of the method exactly as it was performed in the lab.

Use a narrative tone when writing the method and not a first-person tone. For example, you should write "Prepare a solution of ....." rather than writing "I prepared a solution of......".

Include a risk assessment table at the end of the method, outlining the safety, ethical and environmental concerns of the experiment.

Example: All steps of the method are accurately noted down in the narrative tone and no first-person voice has been used. A risk assessment section has been included at the end which accounts for safety, ethical and environmental concerns.

Results:

Include a table of the processed data from the experiment. Include a number and caption for the table and ensure the data is centred in the cells.

Add a section for qualitative data if applicable (eg: colour changes, temperature changes).

Ensure all data in tables has the appropriate number of significant figures and decimal places.

Include a sample equation and calculation showing how the data is processed. Do this for each type of calculation used (eg: calculating averages, calculating molarity, etc).

Place the rest of the processed data in a new processed data table. Include a number and caption for the table and ensure the data is centred in the cells.

Include a sample calculation for the propagation of uncertainties, and place the rest of the uncertainties for the other values in a table with a caption. After calculating the uncertainties, include a description of what they mean in relation to the data. Is the uncertainty small or large? What does this mean about the error and validity of the results?

Include a graph of the processed data versus the independent variable. Include a graph title, axis titles and units, and provide a figure caption for the graph. Include a paragraph below the graph describing the trends in the data such as the correlation if linear (positive or negative) and the R^2 value.

Example: A table of qualitative data, raw data and processed data has been included. All tables have a number and figure caption. Sample calculations are shown for each type of equation used. An appropriate graph has been included as well as a percent error calculation.

Conclusion:

State the aim of the experiment to refresh the reader's memory.

Discuss the trends in the graph and how they correspond to the research question. For example, instead of just saying the rate of reaction increased with temperature, you could say the rate of reaction increased from 5.2 cm3/s to 10.8 cm3/s as temperature was increased from 20-60 degrees Celsius.

Discuss the extent to which the research question was answered - was it answered fully or only partially?

Discuss the R^2 value of the graph (if the data is linear) and how it describes the strength of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables.

Describe if there are any anomalies in the data, and give reasons as to why these may have occurred.

Compare your experimental values to literature values to strengthen your conclusion. Include in-text citations for the literature source.

Discuss the impact of uncertainties - were they a significant amount of the experimental values? (For example, 10g ± 0.01g is more acceptable than 10g ± 1g)

Example: The conclusion clearly re-states the aim of the essay, as well as a statement to which the research question has been answered (results support the hypothesis). Graphical trends and uncertainties are discussed in relation to the research question, such as the relationship between the variables. The reliability of the data was also discussed.

Evaluation:

Critically evaluate the results of the experiment and how they could be improved.

Include a list of the strengths of the experiment and the significance of each strength.

Include a table of the weaknesses of the experiment, as well as how they impacted the results and how to improve this in future.

Make sure to account for random, systematic and human errors in the experiment, how they affected the data, and how this can be corrected in future.

Finally, provide some extensions for the experiment. These should be some topics that relate to or build off the main topic. For example, for the vitamin C analysis of vegetables, you could say how in future you could measure the amount of other vitamins in that particular food, such as vitamins A, B, D, etc. You could also discuss what would happen if some of the control variables of the experiment were used as the dependent variables instead.

Example: A table of strengths and weaknesses is included, along with considerations for random and systematic error. An extension has also been provided for the experiment (eg: using higher temperatures).

References:

Include a full list of all the references used in the IA.

Ensure the bibliography is in the same citation style used in the introduction and background information section.

Example: A full reference list has been included and is in the same citation style as used in the introduction and background information sections.

We hope this guide helps guide you in properly formatting and structuring your Chemistry IA!
Chemistry IA word count and page limit [2025 updated]
Are you in the process of writing your Chemistry IA and you’re not sure about the formal requirements and recommended structure? Clastify comes to the rescue! Read this text to clear your doubts and increase your chance of scoring a 7. Chemistry IA is a scientific investigation that should take up to 3,000 words, there is no page limit. The report requires a purposeful research question and the scientific rationale for it. The basic structure includes an introduction, main body, and conclusion, which can be further subdivided.
Introduction
Start your essay with an introduction of around 500 words presenting the research question and the context of your study. State and explain your hypothesis based on the learned theory. Provide definitions and characteristics of the examined chemical components, phenomena, laws, etc. which are subject to your study. Make sure that you are using specific chemical terminology taught in the IB course. It is important to demonstrate personal engagement by for instance relating to one's area of interest or showing evidence of initiative and input in conducting the research. Check this out for inspiration.
Main body
The main body of around 2,000 words consists of the investigation and analysis. The first subsection should be the methodology. Describe what kind and how many of the apparatus and chemical components are needed to conduct the experiment. Do not forget about providing step-by-step instructions for the procedure and including the apparatus' measurement uncertainties throughout the report. Determine between the controlled and uncontrolled variables. Next, you present the obtained results and process them to find out the answer to the research question. In this part of your IA provide formulas and calculations with well-described units. Look for tendencies through the data. If anomalies occur, think of the factors that could have led to the deviations from the trend. The report should include sufficient relevant quantitative and qualitative raw data that could support a valid conclusion. For better presentation use graphs, tables, and images. See this exemplar with a well-developed main body.

CAROUSEL

Conclusion
In the final section, under 500 words clearly state the answer to the research question. Evaluate your investigation and the obtained results with regard to the focus of the research. It is good to show awareness of environmental issues such as the waste of resources used for the experiment. You should also point out the strengths and weaknesses of your methodology and suggest how the investigation could have been improved. At the end provide the possible ways of extending your research. See this text for an example of a good conclusion. If you need more chemistry exemplars to look up to while writing your report head to the Clastify website. Is it finally time to start working on your Chemistry extended essay? We are here to help you throughout the process. Begin your preparations by getting to know the assessment criteria for the new syllabus from 2027 onwards. Keep reading for our suggestions based on the official IB EE rubric!
Chemistry EE Criteria and Checklist
The Chemistry extended essay is graded out of a total of 30 points based on the following criteria:

Criterion A: Framework for the essay - 6 points

This criterion checks if you have built a solid foundation for your chemistry research. It focuses on whether your research question is clear and if your chosen experimental or data-based methods actually make sense for answering it. In Chemistry, this means your methodology must involve things like controlled variables and a standardized approach that someone else could follow to get the same results. You also need to follow the right format for a science paper, using clear headings and making sure all your chemistry tables and charts are labelled correctly so the reader can easily follow your work. For a maximum of 6 points:

Make sure your research question is phrased as an actual question and includes specific chemical names, concentrations, and temperatures.

When writing your method, include every single step, piece of glassware, and chemical used so that a student in another school could exactly replicate your lab work.

Explicitly list and explain your independent, dependent, and controlled variables in a clear table to show you understand the experimental design.

Ensure every table and graph has a unique figure number and a descriptive title that explains exactly what the data represents.

Organize your essay with standard scientific sections like "Introduction," "Methodology," "Results," and "Discussion" in your Table of Contents and main body of the essay.

A good example can be seen here.
Criterion B: Knowledge and understanding - 6 points

To do well here, you need to show that you really know your chemistry. It’s not just about doing an experiment; it’s about explaining the science behind it using the right terminology. You should show how your specific experiment fits into the larger world of chemistry by referencing textbooks or scientific journals. Everything in your essay - from the symbols you use for elements to the way you write units (like using SI units) - should be consistent and accurate. For a maximum of 6 points:

Always define technical terms or chemical theories the first time you mention them.

Apply the International System of Units (SI) correctly and consistently for all measurements and data points.

Integrate high-quality sources, like peer-reviewed journals or chemistry databases, to explain the theoretical background of your reaction.

Double-check that all chemical formulas use proper subscripts and superscripts throughout the entire document.

Explain the chemistry of why a certain reagent was chosen, rather than just stating that you used it.

Click here for a good example of the above.
Criterion C: Analysis and line of argument - 6 points

This is where you show off your data-crunching skills. You need to take your raw numbers and turn them into something meaningful, like a graph or a calculated value. The IB wants to see a "reasoned thread" throughout your essay. This means every piece of data you analyze should lead the reader closer to answering your main research question. It’s important to stay focused; if a piece of data doesn’t help answer your question, it shouldn't be in the main body of your essay. For a maximum of 6 points:

Process your raw data using appropriate chemical calculations, such as finding the mean, standard deviation, or other calculations that are relevant to your research question.

Include a sample calculation for every type of math you do so the examiner can see exactly how you reached your final values.

Explain how your data helps answer your overall research question.

When plotting graphs, ensure you include error bars and a line of best fit to show the reliability and trends in your chemical data.

Present your raw data in the appendix if it is very long, but keep the processed summary tables in the main text where the argument is happening.

This EE effectively meets the above.

CAROUSEL

Criterion D: Discussion and evaluation - 8 points

This criterion focuses on critical thinking. You need to look at your results and explain what they actually mean in a scientific context. This is also the place to be honest about what went wrong. You should discuss the limitations of your equipment or method and suggest real ways to make the experiment better. Even if your experiment didn't work the way you expected, a strong scientific evaluation of those negative results can still earn high marks. For a maximum of 8 points:

Compare your experimental results with literature values from reliable chemistry journal articles and calculate the percentage error.

Specifically identify if errors in your data were systematic (like an uncalibrated balance) or random (like judging a colour change).

Suggest specific, high-level improvements. Chemistry EE Criteria and Checklist

The change in the IB Chemistry syllabus (2025) may leave many students confused about the new format of Paper 1. In this post, however, we’ll break down everything you need to know, so you can approach the exam with clarity and confidence.
IB Chemistry Paper 1

Accounts for 36% of the student's subject grade (SL & HL).

SL students have 1 hour 30 minutes, while HL students are given 2 hours to complete Paper 1.

Calculators are permitted.

Paper 1 is made up of two separate booklets – Paper 1A and Paper 1B. Both papers are however completed in one sitting.

Paper 1A

Solely made up of multiple-choice questions – students must select one answer from the four provided.

Each question is worth 1 mark.

The SL Paper 1A consists of 30 multiple choice-questions (30 marks total), while the HL Paper 1A consists of 40 multiple-choice questions (40 marks).

Points are not deducted for incorrect answers.

While multiple-choice questions may seem simple, many students find them unexpectedly difficult. The options are crafted to make more than one choice appear correct, even though only one is. Furthermore, with only 50 minutes for SL and 1 hour for HL (assuming equal time is allotted between Paper 1A and 1B), you have about a minute and a half per question, which adds to the pressure. However, you can master Paper 1A by regularly practicing sample questions and timing yourself.

A typical Section A SL question may look the following way: Which statement(s) is(are) correct for chromium? [1] I. The electron configuration for its divalent cation is [Ar]3d5 II. It belongs to the d-blockIII. Its condensed electronic configuration is [Ar]4s23d4 (a) I and II only (b) II only (c) II and III only (d) III only

A typical Section A HL question may look the following way: A cyclist rides up a hill of vertical height 100m in 500s at a constant speed. The combined mass of the cyclist and the cyclist is 80kg. The power developed by the cyclist is 200 W. What is the efficiency of the energy transfer in this system?A. 8%B. 20% C. 60%D. 80%
Paper 1B

Made up of data-based questions.

Questions relate to experimental work.

The SL Paper 1B consists of 25 marks while the HL paper is marked out of 35.

Points are not deducted for incorrect answers.

The key to excelling in Paper 1B is your ability to critically assess the experiments and data presented, while integrating relevant syllabus knowledge. The Chemistry Paper 1B requires not just an understanding of theoretical concepts but also the ability to interpret experimental work accurately. A thorough understanding of experimental work and analytical skills are therefore essential for this section. In Section B, students are presented with data-based questions. These may look the following way: Based on the graph provided: (a) State the values of the coefficients x, y, and z. [2] (b) Deduce the average rate of reaction in reference to the rate of formation of NO2. [1] (c) A small amount of NO2 remains dissolved in the nitric acid. State why this effect produces a systematic error in the measured gas volume. [1] (d) Calculate the value of S. [1] (e) The calculated yield after 1 min was 0.084 +/- 0.03 mol dm-3. Calculate the percentage uncertainty in the calculated yield. [2] We hope you found this post helpful. Chemistry IA Topic Ideas + Examples

A strong conclusion to your IB Chemistry IA shows that you can interpret data and think critically about your results. In this section, you should summarize your main findings, connect them to relevant chemical principles, and assess the reliability of your experiment. This post will explain how to structure your conclusion effectively and will highlight important elements to include in your Chemistry IA conclusion.
IB Chemistry IA Conclusion

Restate the aim
Begin your conclusion by briefly restating the aim of your experiment. This reminds the reader of the focus and purpose of your investigation. Keep it concise but specific, mentioning the independent and dependent variables. This sets the context for interpreting your findings and evaluating how effectively your investigation addressed its main objective. For a good example of this, click here.
Discuss graphical trends
Summarize the key trends or patterns observed in your graphs and explain how these relate to your research question. Describe whether the relationship was linear, exponential, or inverse, and link this trend to the theoretical expectations. Showing how your graphical data supports or challenges the expected chemistry principle strengthens your analytical depth and shows that you can critically analyze the results of your experiment. A good example can be seen here.
Discuss the R2 value
If your data is linear, mention the R² value from your graph and interpret what it indicates about the strength of the correlation between variables. A value close to 1 suggests a good linear fit and strong correlation between variables, while a lower value indicates a weak correlation. Explaining the R2 value shows how well your experimental data supports theoretical expectations. For example, if linear results are expected and you get a high R2 value, you can explain that your data is reliable. However, if there is a weak correlation due to a low R2 value, you can explain what may have caused it. A good explanation of the R2 value can be read here and here.
Use experimental values
Refer directly to numerical data or calculated results to make your conclusion evidence-based. For example, instead of general statements (e.g. solubility increases with temperature), use specific values to demonstrate your findings (e.g. solubility of potassium nitrate increased from 32 g/100 g H₂O at 20°C to 63 g/100 g H₂O at 50°C). This adds precision and specificity to your interpretation and demonstrates that your claims are supported by data rather than vague observations or assumptions. This also shows that you can critically evaluate which numerical values are important and should be highlighted against the rest. A good example can be found here.
Discuss the extent to which the research question was answered
Evaluate whether your investigation fully or only partially addressed the research question. Reflect on how well your data supports your conclusion and whether any limitations prevented complete resolutions to your investigations. If the research question was only partially answered, explain why and discuss what could have been done to result in a fully answered research question.
Describe and explain anomalies or deviations from expected results
Describe whether your results follow the expected trends or not. If your results deviate from the expected trends, propose reasonable explanations for the deviation, such as incomplete reactions, impurities in the chemicals, measurement inaccuracies, or limitations of the laboratory equipment. Note that these limitations may be briefly stated in the conclusion, but should be thoroughly explained later in the evaluation. A good discussion of a deviation from expected results can be found here.
Compare experimental and literature values
Compare your measured or calculated values with accepted theoretical or literature values to assess the accuracy of your results. Discuss how closely your results align (i.e. if the values are in a similar range) and provide explanations for any discrepancies. This comparison of experimental and literature values will help validate your findings and provide an accredited scientific benchmark for evaluating your experiment's results. A good example of this is present here.
Discuss the impact of uncertainties
Evaluate how measurement uncertainties affected your results. Determine whether they were relatively small or large compared to the measured values. For example, in a Chemistry IA measuring the concentration of a solution, a value of 0.100 mol·L⁻¹ ± 0.001 mol·L⁻¹ indicates high precision and reliable results, whereas 0.100 mol·L⁻¹ ± 0.010 mol·L⁻¹ suggests lower precision and greater uncertainty. Analyzing the significance of uncertainties shows your understanding of the reliability of your experimental results. A good example of an uncertainty discussion can be seen here and here. We hope this post has helped you learn more about how to write an IB Chemistry IA conclusion. Present your process comprehensively, including calculations, processed data tables, and preferably, results of statistical analysis. To see how it should look like, check this example.

Poor Communication: Criterion E, Communication, focuses on work presentation. Before submission, ensure consistent page numbering, text justification, and labeling of figures and tables—maintain a uniform format: a number and a brief description of contents. Properly executed Communication can be found here.

Incomplete evaluation: A comprehensive evaluation should discuss study strengths, weaknesses, and analyze potential impacts of different error sources. Categorize errors accordingly—Chemistry recognizes systematic and random errors. To see this in details, check this one.

Not including enough trials: Regardless of your experiment's design, repetition is essential. Averaging results from multiple trials enhances reliability and minimizes the impact of random errors or outliers. While some suggest at least 3 trials, in most cases, 5 trials are ideal. To see what we're talking about, see this exemplar.

Too large (or too small) background info section: Background information should enhance understanding of investigation elements—design, results, and discussion. Ensure the introduction covers all research question elements while omitting irrelevant information. Short yet perfectly written background information here.

CAROUSEL

Neglecting uncertainty consideration: Every data collection process carries method uncertainty, often linked to equipment uncertainty. Analyze its impact by calculating percentage uncertainty relative to results and address its impact on reliability. And a perfect example of a proper way to do it in this IA.

Not including qualitative data: Criterion C, Analysis, requires the inclusion of both quantitative and qualitative data. Describe changes in color, temperature, or smell of experimental solutions for maximum marks. Check good data presentation here.

Unfocused research question: Many students include a research question, often incomplete. A correct one specifies independent and dependent variables, measurement method, unit, and literature name of the studied reaction. Great RQ is formulated in this exemplar.

Lack of reference to the results in the conclusion: A relevant conclusion directly follows from results. Demonstrate the link by quoting specific figures from tables or addressing observed trends on graphs. To see what this is all about, check this IA.

Not labeling the sources of error: Including errors isn't enough - classify them properly. In Chemistry IA, categorize errors into systematic (equipment and experiment design limitations) and random errors (observer perception defects, like incorrect titration meniscus reading). And lastly, this one shows it well.

We hope you found this post helpful. A comprehensive guide on the top 10 mistakes in Chemistry Internal Investigation

Top 10 mistakes in Chemistry IA

The Evaluation section of your IB Chemistry IA demonstrates your ability to think critically about your experiment. In this section, you should assess the quality of your results, identify limitations, consider sources of error, and propose meaningful improvements. This post will outline some key things to keep in mind when writing the evaluation of your IB Chemistry IA.
IB Chemistry IA Evaluation

Highlight the strengths
A strengths section in the evaluation allows you to demonstrate aspects of the investigation that worked well. This may include effective control of variables, consistent measurement techniques, or appropriate use of equipment with sufficient resolution. For example, an IA about using titrations to measure the vitamin C concentration in orange juice could say, “Using a 25.00 mL burette with a 0.05 mL resolution significantly increased the accuracy of the titration readings.” Highlighting the strengths of your investigation shows awareness of what gave your results credibility and why your experimental method was scientifically sound. For a good example of how to highlight strengths, see this IA.
Explain the weaknesses and suggest improvements
Your evaluation should also address experimental limitations that reduced reliability or accuracy, and offer improvements to address them. You should avoid using vague statements like “human error affected the results” and should instead identify specific procedural or equipment-related issues. For example, an IA discussing the effect of temperature on ester hydrolysis could say, “A major weakness was the fluctuating temperature of the water bath, which altered reaction rate measurements; using a thermostatically controlled bath instead would help maintain a constant temperature.” Each weakness must identify a targeted improvement that would increase the precision or accuracy if the experiment were to be repeated in future. A good example can be seen here.
Discuss all types of errors
The discussion about experimental limitations should reflect random, systematic, and human errors wherever possible. You should explain how each type of error influenced your results. Random errors may arise from minor measurement fluctuations, while systematic errors could stem from impure reagents or miscalibrated instruments. For example, the evaluation for an IA about measuring the percentage of calcium in chalk could say, “A systematic error occurred because the analytical balance consistently read 0.003 g higher, shifting all mass-dependent calculations.” A thorough error discussion shows understanding of where uncertainty entered your experiment and how it affected your final results. A good example of when a student discussed various types of errors can be found here and here.
Provide some extensions to the experiment
Provide some extensions that demonstrate higher-level thinking by proposing broader applications related to your IA topic. These should build on your findings and explore related variables or improved methodologies. For example, an IA about a colourimetric titration could say, “An extension could involve using UV-Vis spectroscopy to measure reaction progress continuously and compare its precision to the manual sampling method used in this experiment.” Including thoughtful extensions shows that you understand the larger scientific context and can provide relevant ideas on how the research could be further explored. A good example of extensions can be found here and here. We hope this post has helped you learn more about how to write an IB Chemistry IA evaluation. Best IB Chemistry textbooks

Choosing between IB Chemistry and AP Chemistry is a major decision for high school students interested in science, engineering, medicine, or related fields. While both courses are rigorous and widely respected by universities, they differ significantly in structure, assessment, workload, and learning approach. This post will outline the differences between the two Chemistry courses to help you decide which one best suits your academic goals.
IB Chemistry vs AP Chemistry

Curriculum and structure
IB Chemistry is offered at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) as part of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). The course emphasizes conceptual understanding and practical investigation. Students can choose to pursue HL Chemistry if they want a more in-depth overview, or SL Chemistry if they are interested in the course but do not wish to pursue higher education in the field. AP Chemistry, on the other hand, is a single-level, college-introductory course designed by the College Board. It follows a more linear structure, with a strong focus on problem-solving and quantitative analysis. Topics covered in both courses include stoichiometry, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, organic chemistry, etc.
Assessment style
One of the biggest differences lies in how students are assessed. IB Chemistry uses a combination of external exams and internal coursework. Students complete an Internal Assessment (IA), which is a self-designed laboratory investigation that tests experimental design, data processing, and evaluation skills. IB Chemistry final exams include multiple-choice, calculations, short-answer, and extended-response questions. AP Chemistry assessment is more exam-focused, culminating in a single final exam with multiple-choice and free-response sections. The AP Chemistry course does not have an equivalent report-style laboratory investigation like the IB Chemistry IA.
Practical and investigative skills
IB Chemistry places heavy emphasis on experimental work. Students are expected to design experiments, manage uncertainties, and critically evaluate results. This approach develops strong scientific inquiry skills as students as expected to produce a 3000-word final lab report worth 20% of the course grade. AP Chemistry includes laboratory work as well, but labs are more structured and primarily support exam content rather than independent investigation.
Workload and time commitment
IB Chemistry, especially at HL, is often considered quite intensive as students need to balance completing the IA and laboratory practicals alongside studying for exams. AP Chemistry’s workload is concentrated on mastering content and exam practice, which may feel more manageable as students can focus their attention on studying for tests rather than on completing exams and lab reports alongside exam prep.
University recognition
Both Chemistry courses are well recognized by universities worldwide. IB Chemistry HL is frequently viewed as particularly rigorous and may lead to advanced standing or high school transfer credit. AP Chemistry can also earn college credit, depending on the institution and exam score. Overall, the IB program holds more weight globally, while AP is more recognized in North America.
Which one should you choose?
IB Chemistry is ideal for students who enjoy research, lab work, and holistic assessment. AP Chemistry suits students who prefer exam-focused learning and intensive problem-solving. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your learning style and university goals. We hope this post has helped you learn more about the differences between IB Chemistry and AP Chemistry. IB Chemistry vs AP Chemistry

Choosing between IB Chemistry and A-level Chemistry is an important decision for students interested in medicine, engineering, environmental science, or other related fields. While both qualifications are academically demanding and highly respected by universities, they differ in their course structures, assessment styles, and learning approaches. This post outlines the key differences between the two Chemistry pathways to help you decide which one best fits your goals.
IB Chemistry vs A-level Chemistry

Curriculum and structure
IB Chemistry is offered at Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL) as part of the IB Diploma Programme. The course is designed to develop both conceptual understanding and scientific inquiry, with strong links between theory and experimental work. Students who choose HL Chemistry study additional content and explore topics in greater depth compared with SL students. A-level Chemistry is typically studied over two years in the UK and other international school systems and is awarded through exam boards such as AQA, OCR, Pearson Edexcel, and Cambridge (CIE). Unlike IB, there is no SL or HL pathway, and all students follow a single, fixed syllabus. Both IB and A-level Chemistry cover core topics such as atomic structure, energetics, kinetics, equilibrium, acids and bases, organic chemistry, and analytical techniques.
Assessment style
One of the most significant differences between IB Chemistry and A-level Chemistry is how student performance is assessed. In IB Chemistry, students are evaluated through a combination of external written examinations and internal coursework. A major component of this coursework is the Internal Assessment (IA), a student-designed laboratory investigation that assesses experimental design, data processing, and scientific evaluation skills. The IA contributes 20% of the final grade. IB Chemistry final exams include multiple-choice, calculations, short-answer, and extended-response questions. A-level Chemistry is primarily assessed through final written examinations at the end of the course. While there is a practical component, students do not submit a large independent laboratory investigation similar to the IB IA. Instead, practical skills are assessed indirectly through exam questions and, in many cases, through a separate lab exam or practical endorsement that confirms whether required laboratory competencies have been demonstrated. The requirement for the lab exam depends on which exam board the student is taking the A-level Chemistry course with (e.g. CIE, AQA, etc.).
Practical and investigative skills
IB Chemistry places strong emphasis on scientific investigation and inquiry. Students are expected to design experiments, manage uncertainties, justify methods, and critically evaluate their results. This approach helps students develop research skills that are closely aligned with first-year university laboratory expectations. In A-level Chemistry, practical work is also an important part of learning, but it is generally more teacher-led and structured. Experiments are often designed to reinforce theoretical concepts and prepare students for exam questions, rather than to develop independent research and experimental design skills to the same extent as IB students do.
Workload and time commitment
IB Chemistry, especially at HL, can feel demanding because students must balance continuous practical work, the Internal Assessment, and preparation for multiple examination papers. Time management is essential, as coursework and exam revision occur alongside other IB subjects. A-level Chemistry typically involves a more exam-focused workload. Students spend most of their time learning content, practising calculations, and preparing for structured exam questions. Many students find this style more straightforward, as there is less extended written coursework to manage.
University recognition
Both IB Chemistry and A-level Chemistry are widely recognised by universities. IB Chemistry HL is often viewed as particularly rigorous and is commonly preferred for competitive science and health-related programs. A-level Chemistry is also highly respected, especially in the UK and Commonwealth systems, and is a standard entry requirement for many science and medical degrees.
Which one should you choose?
IB Chemistry is well-suited to students who enjoy research, experimental design, and a balanced assessment approach that values both practical and theoretical skills. A-level Chemistry is better for students who prefer a more traditional, exam-driven structure with a strong emphasis on content mastery and problem-solving. Ultimately, the best choice depends on your learning style, academic strengths, and university plans. We hope this post has helped clarify the differences between IB Chemistry and A-level Chemistry. IB Chemistry vs A-level Chemistry

Starting to write can be the hardest part of any assignment. Planning your Biology IA might seem a bit overwhelming, especially if it's your first time with a longer project. But no worries – we've got you covered with five simple steps to help you begin writing your Biology IA quickly.
5 steps to jumpstart writing your Chemistry IA

Think about the topic of your investigation: The topic of your investigation will impact every part of your writing process. However, choosing it might be difficult, as there are numerous factors to take into consideration. Here are the most important ones:

Manageability: In this big category, consider your knowledge, skills, ethics, resources, and time constraints. For instance, if you're interested in hydrocarbon synthesis, but it requires expensive equipment and resources mainly found in industrial plants, it might not be manageable. Choose an experiment with a methodology you're somewhat familiar with and explore reactions feasible for your school laboratory.

Personal interest (and global significance): Ideally, pick a topic personally meaningful to you to boost motivation. However, balance it with potential challenges and resource demands. A great approach is selecting a manageable topic aligned with your interests. For instance, if you love organic chemistry, explore the enthalpy of reaction, ensuring proper isolation of the apparatus.

Initiative in designing the study: While it might seem like everything has been done, you can enhance your work by adding innovation. For example, conduct a preliminary trial to fine-tune your independent variable range or use a less obvious measurement method. In titration experiments, set the end point as a change in pH, color change, or something unique to add a creative touch. And great example of perfectly structured topic is to be found here.

Consider your resources: Despite our best efforts, high school investigations are often limited by the varying access to different resources. Before confirming your choice of topic, you should evaluate:

Time: In chemistry, some experiments take only hours or days, but others involve preparation or waiting for reactants to arrive. Even theoretical studies require extensive research. Start early to avoid limitations. If your chosen topic can't be completed within your remaining time frame, consider switching to a more manageable investigation.

Place: Decide where to conduct your investigation—home, school lab, or an external institution. This choice significantly affects the experiments you can perform. Theoretical studies can be done at home, while precise weighing scales or reaction rate investigations may require school lab equipment. Advanced machines like spectrophotometers often need access to professional or university labs.

Equipment: This is closely tied to the previous point. If you opt for the school lab, check available equipment. For a chemistry investigation, you might need weighing scales, titration apparatus, etc. Consult upper-grade students for advice on equipment and potential systematic errors due to faulty equipment. While you might need to buy some materials, focus on what's already accessible to limit costs, as reagents and electronic devices can be expensive. Check our example of all of the above in this place.

CAROUSEL

Do extensive background research: Before finalizing your investigation idea, conduct thorough background research using tools like Google Scholar. Search relevant keywords, create a list of 10-20 publications, and use them for referencing later. A comprehensive guide on how to start writing Chemistry IA.

How to start writing Chemistry IA

Thinking about choosing IB Chemistry as your science course but unsure if it’s the right match? If you’re evaluating your science options and wondering about the challenges IB Chemistry might bring, this guide will provide all the insights you need to make a well-informed choice.
How hard is IB Chemistry?

How hard is IB Chemistry?
When looking at the official IB statistics it may seem that IB Chemistry is one of the easier science options, with as much as 29.5% at HL and 10.2% of SL students achieving grade 7. This statistic can however be quite misleading. Just because a relatively high proportion of students achieve a perfect score does not necessarily mean that the subject is easier. It is important to keep in mind that subjects such as Chemistry are often chosen by highly dedicated students who aim to pursue related fields at university level. IB Chemistry is considered a challenging course. It is often ranked slightly above IB Biology in terms of difficulty, however comparison is subjective and depends heavily on individual strengths. IB Chemistry involves mastering more complex concepts, whereas IB Biology demands a greater emphasis on memorization due to its extensive content. Ultimately, however, most students admit that IB Chemistry is the tougher subject.
What are some of the challenges of IB Chemistry?

The subject, especially at HL, requires proficient mathematical skills.

Students must memorise various chemical concepts and be able to then apply them in unfamiliar contexts.

In IB Chemistry many topics build upon each other, so gaps in understanding earlier concepts can create difficulties later in the course.

Many concepts are abstract and require imaginative thinking to understand. This strong emphasis on theory can make it difficult for students to visualise the required concepts.

Juggling a mix of memorization, practical work, and conceptual understanding can be challenging for many students.

Who should consider doing IB Chemistry?
Students who wish to pursue medicine, biotechnology, or other related courses at university are advised to choose IB Chemistry at HL as it not only will provide them with a solid foundation for university studies but is also a requirement for many courses. Students which do not wish to pursue any related courses at university may consider choosing Chemistry at SL. Chemistry SL covers a more smaller range of topics and requires a less in-depth understanding compared to Higher Level, making it more manageable. However, if a student has minimal interest in chemistry and needs to fulfill their science requirement, they might find IB Biology at SL to be a better fit. Biology is generally perceived as slightly easier, though, as mentioned, this depends on individual strengths. For students who struggle with or dislike memorization, IB Chemistry might be the preferable choice as it places more emphasis on application of concepts and analytical skills.
Tips for succeeding in IB Chemistry

Solve past papers – IB Chemistry places strong emphasis on the application of concepts. Doing past paper questions will allow you to practice and apply the learned concepts.

Master the key concepts – While the main challenge in IB Chemistry is the ability to apply chemical concepts in different contexts, it is essential to master all concepts and thoroughly understand their details

Use Flashcards – Create flashcards for key terms, chemical formulas, and important concepts. Quiz yourself to reinforce your memory and improve recall.

Practice data questions – practice analyzing graphs, charts, and data tables as these are a big part of the examination.

Stay on track – In IB Chemistry, many concepts build upon previous topics. If you're unsure about anything, don't hesitate. Reach out to your teacher to clarify any doubts before they become obstacles.

Carefully plan your IA – select a topic that genuinely interests you and ensure your IA is well-organized, clear, and detailed. A strong IA can greatly enhance your overall score. Understand how hard IB Chemistry is. Explore what makes the course challenging, who is it suitable for, the difference between SL and HL, as well as tips on succeeding in IB Chemistry.

How hard is IB Chemistry?

IB Chemistry is undoubtedly a challenging course, but we know that every one of you aspires to achieve that perfect 7. In this post, we’ll share expert tips and strategies to help you turn that goal into reality.
How to get a 7 in IB Chemistry
Master the key concepts – Chemistry builds on fundamental principles, so it's essential to thoroughly understand the basics, such as atomic structure, bonding, and stoichiometry. Don't overlook your mathematical skills – While Chemistry isn’t a Math course, being confident with calculations will save you time and help you avoid unnecessary mistakes during exams. IB Chemistry, especially at HL, relies on mathematical calculations, and hence strong math skills are essential for success. Many topics, such as mole calculations, titration calculations, and more, require mathematical reasoning. Make sure you’re comfortable with concepts like rearranging formulas, working with significant figures, and using scientific notation. Solve past paper questions – Working through past paper questions is an excellent way to prepare for IB Chemistry exams. It allows you to understand how key concepts are assessed and familiarize yourself with the structure and style of exam questions. The more past papers you tackle, the more confident you'll become, as you'll uncover recurring themes and question patterns that can help you master the material effectively. Create a strong IA – The IA is worth 20% of your final grade, so choose a topic that interests you and has a clear connection to chemistry. Good IA topics often involve electrolysis or titration investigations, but you may focus on other areas that interest you so long as they allow for precise data collection and analysis. In your IA, make sure to follow a logical structure, with clear research questions, detailed methodologies, and thorough evaluations. For inspiration and guidance on the IB Chemistry IA, make sure to check out Clastify's wide array of IB Chemistry IAs.

CAROUSEL

Practice data questions – A significant portion of the IB Chemistry examination focuses on data-based questions. These require you to interpret experimental results, analyze graphs, identify trends, and perform calculations based on provided information. By practicing data questions regularly, you’ll develop the critical skills needed to tackle these types of problems with confidence. This includes extracting relevant details from tables, understanding how variables interact, and applying theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios. Stay consistent – IB Chemistry is demanding, so it’s important to stay consistent with your studies. Break down the syllabus into manageable sections, and review regularly rather than cramming before exams. Also, make sure to take care of your mental health by getting enough rest and finding time to relax. We believe this is absolutely essential for success. Understand, don't just memorise – A deep understanding of chemistry is crucial for exams because they often require applying knowledge from different perspectives. Memorization alone isn’t enough; you need to understand the "why" to approach questions effectively. Questions often challenge you to manipulate the concepts you studied and hence this ability to view concepts flexibly allows you to solve complex questions. We hope you found this post helpful.
