IB English A Lang & Lit vs English A Literature

The course also explores various literary theories, encouraging students to engage critically with the texts and understand their cultural and historical contexts.
Similarities and differences
- In Lang & Lit, Paper 1 assesses the language component – students analyse an unseen text and break down how the use of text, graphics, visuals, and other components shape the meaning of the text. In Lang & Lit Paper 1 students may expect to analyse texts such as advertisements, blogs, articles, or even comics.
- In Lit, Paper 1 on the other hand requires students to analyse an unseen literary passage – usually poetry or prose.
- Paper 2 is where the two courses overlap. Both Lang & Lit and Lit students write a comparative essay based on the works studied during the course.
- At HL, in both Lang & Lit and Lit, students are required to complete the HL Essay (coursework). Lang & Lit students are free to choose a literary or non-literary work. Lit students must focus on a literary work.
- Both courses require students to complete the Internal Oral (IO). At Lang & Lit, students must analyze a literary text and a non-literary body of work whereas for Lit students must analyze two literary works.
Difficulty
The difficulty of IB Language and Literature versus IB Literature largely depends on the individual student's strengths and skills. While both courses require literary analysis, IB Literature places a heavier emphasis on this, especially in Paper 1, where students must analyze unseen literary texts on the spot. This requires the ability to quickly interpret themes, language, and literary devices without prior preparation. In contrast, IB Language and Literature also involves literary analysis but is more balanced with language-focused components. Students can prepare in advance for Paper 2, where they can anticipate the works they will discuss and have analysis points ready. Thus, students who struggle with quick interpretation or don’t enjoy reading poetry and complex texts may find Lang & Lit a better fit. On the other hand, students who are strong at literary analysis, enjoy interpreting texts, and appreciate studying poetry may find IB Literature more rewarding.
