Feeling disheartened because your IB results didn't quite meet your expectations? Don't worry – there's a process for requesting a re-evaluation of your exam papers. Welcome to our guide on the IB remark procedure, where we'll explain everything you need to know about getting a second review of your exams.

IB Remark Procedure Explained
The IB Remark Procedure, or as the IB calls it, the "Enquiry Upon Results" (EUR), is a service provided by the International Baccalaureate (IB) organization that allows students to request a review of their external or internal assessments if they believe their final grades do not accurately reflect their performance. This process involves a re-marking or re-assessment of the student's work by a senior examiner. It is important to mention, that a remark procedure can only be initiated with the permission of the school's IB Coordinator. Also, written consent of the candidate (or their legal guardian) is required. Students may request 4 different types of EuRs:

Category 1 Remark – this type of EuR is used when students wish to have the externally assessed components of a subject re-marked. It is typically conducted by senior IB examiners to identify and correct any potential errors in the initial grading. It is important to mention that in a Category 1 EuR a student's grade may increase, remain the same or even decrease. Hence we strongly advise to carefully consider your situation before requesting this remark procedure.

Category 1 Report – since a Category 1 Remark may not include specific feedback, students who want to understand how their marks were awarded and identify the previous marking errors should request a Category 1 Report.

Category 2A – this type of EuR is available to only teachers and faculty members. Category 2A EuR is used when a teacher wishes to review given externally assessed component (e.g. Paper 2).

Category 2B – this type of EuR is available to only teachers and faculty members. Category 2B EuR is used when a teacher wishes to review all of the externally assessed material in a given subject.

Category 3 – this type of EuR is used when the average of the candidates' moderated IA marks differs significantly from the teacher-awarded marks, with a difference of at least 15% of the total marks for the subject's IA component. In the Category 3 EuR, the grades may only increase or remain the same.

EuR Grade Changes

Category 1 – the student's grade may increase, decrease, or remain the same after the remark

Category 1 Report – there is no grade change in this EuR. This EuR only allows students to examine the marking.

Category 2A – since in this category no remarking takes place, there is no grade change

Category 2B – since in this category no remarking takes place, there is no grade change

Category 3 – grades may only increase or remain the same.

Remark Procedure Fees
For each of the above categories students must pay $89. If however the student's grade changes as a result of a Category 1 EuR, the IBO will refund the payment.
Remark Procedure Duration

Category 1 – up to 18 days

Category 1 Report – up to 30 days

Category 2A – up to 18 days

Category 2B – up to 18 days

Category 3 – up to 40 days

How to request an EuR?
As mentioned, in order to request an Enquiry upon Results, students need the approval of their school's IB Coordinator. Students should email their Coordinator to initiate the process, and the Coordinator will handle the subsequent steps

Is the remark procedure worth it?
Most students consider getting a Category 1 remark, which involves a re-mark of the entire external component of a given subject. The outcome of a remark can vary: grades might increase, decrease, or stay the same. Students should therefore carefully consider their situation before making the decision to request a remark. Remember to assess the importance of the potential grade increase. For instance, if the current grade is crucial for meeting university entry requirements, the benefits of a higher grade might outweigh the risks. Secondly, think about your performance on the exam. If you are only a few points from the upper grade boundary, a remark may turn out to be very helpful. However, it's essential to weigh these potential benefits against the risks and costs. There's a chance the grade could go down, and the remark process itself is expensive, costing around 89 euros. Ultimately, students should consider whether the potential advantages justify the costs and risks involved. We hope you found this post useful. IB Remark Procedure Explained

You may have noticed that the IB exams or past papers may have a zone associated with them. If you are wondering what "zone" means, this post is here to give you an in-depth guide to IB exam zones, including why they are necessary and how they work.
IB Exam Zones Explained

What are IB Exam Zones?

IB exam zones are geographical boundaries set by the IB organization in order to manage the worldwide administration of IB exams. IB exam zones are created to ensure the fairness of IB exams and prevent the possibility of students from one timezone sharing answers with students from another timezone. By creating multiple versions of question papers, the IB ensures that answers cannot be shared by students as the questions themselves will be different for different timezones, thus preventing any academic misconduct and maintaining the integrity of the IB Diploma.
How IB Exam Zones Work

Global division: IB schools globally are separated into zones based on their local time zones and proximity to each other. Zones are usually Zone A (Americas), Zone B (Europe, Africa, Middle East), and Zone C (Asia-Pacific).

Exam scheduling: Exam start times are the same within each zone. For example, a morning exam that starts at 8:00 AM in Zone A will also start at similar times in the local time of Zones B and C. Some variations may exist (eg: start time of 9:00 AM in some zones) but you will need to check this with your respective school.

Type and content of questions: While the exam content remains the same across time zones, the type and wording of questions may vary. For example, different calculations or short-answer questions may be asked in different time zones, although the overall content students need to study will be the same globally as per the IB curriculum.

CAROUSEL

Preparing for Exams in Your Zone

Follow your school's guidelines: Schools receive detailed instructions from the IBO regarding the timings of IB exams. Students should rely on their school's IB coordinators for information regarding the dates and timings of their exams.

Plan your schedule: Sometimes you may have 2 exams on one day, depending on your subject choice and zone where you are located. If this is the case for you, you should plan your studying and revision process well in advance to ensure you have enough time to study for both exams efficiently.

We hope this post was useful in explaining IB exam zones. IB Exam Zones Explained

If you're wondering about the amount of IB students that obtained a score of 45 points, you've come to the right place. In this post we will share the amount of candidates that managed to obtain a perfect IB score.
How many IB students get 45?
Although the IB ceased publishing the number of candidates who achieved a perfect score of 45 after the May 2023 session – citing a desire to celebrate the achievements of all students – data from previous exam sessions still provides a useful indication of how many students reach this top score. While the amount of students that obtain a score of 45 points varies from year to year, usually, the amount of students that manage to obtain a perfect score ranges between 0.2% – 1% of the total amount candidates. The amount of students that managed to obtain a score of 45 points over the years is as follows:

November 2022 – 0.9%

May 2022 – 0.4%

November 2021 – 1.7%

May 2021 – 0.8%

November 2020 – 0.6%

May 2020 – 0.2%

November 2019 – 0.5%

May 2019 – 0.2%

November 2018 – 0.5%

May 2018 – 0.2%

November 2017 – 0.6%

May 2017 – 0.2%

It is clear that the number of students achieving a perfect score of 45 varies from year to year. Notably, significantly more students obtained perfect scores during the period when exams were canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic – particularly between November 2020 and November 2021. Additionally, data suggests that a higher proportion of students tend to achieve a score of 45 in the November sessions. However, this does not necessarily indicate that the November session is easier; other factors, such as a greater number of re-take candidates, likely contribute to the higher percentage.

How to achieve a perfect score of 45?

Understand the assessment criteria. Familiarise yourself with the mark schemes and rubrics for each subject. Knowing exactly what examiners are looking for – whether it's in an essay, an IA, or an oral – will help you tailor your work to meet the highest standards without spending time and effort on less important parts.

Maintain a healthy balance. Taking breaks and allowing yourself time to rest is just as important as studying. Make space in your schedule for relaxation and activities you enjoy, whether it's a hobby or simply unwinding. This will help you recharge, avoid burnout, and make your study sessions far more effective.

Excel in the IB Core. Don’t underestimate the importance of the Core components – TOK and the Extended Essay. Scoring well in TOK and the EE can earn you up to 3 additional points, which can make the difference. Choose topics you're genuinely interested in, start early, and work consistently. There is also plenty of exemplars for TOK and the EE available on our website so feel free to take inspiration from them. You can also use Clastify's Review Service to get tailored feedback for your TOK coursework and the EE.

Prioritise quality over quantity. Spending hours studying doesn’t always lead to better results. Focused, active revision – such as practice papers, flashcards, and teaching concepts to others – is far more effective than passive reading or cramming.

Practice past papers under exam conditions. Get used to the format, timing, and pressure of real exams. Practice not just answering questions, but doing so within time limits. This builds confidence and exam technique, which can boost your performance on the day.

Craft strong IAs. The Internal Assessment usually accounts for around 20% of the final grade and hence it is crucial that you submit a strong piece of work if you're aiming for a perfect score. To help you structure and writer your IAs, make sure to visit Clastify for a wide range of exemplars. Also, make sure to check out Clastify's Review Service for personalised feedback on your IAs.

We hope you found this post helpful. How many IB students get 45?

If your IB results didn’t go as planned and this affects your university plans, don’t worry – there’s a retake session that gives you the chance to improve your grades and secure the future you’re aiming for.
IB Exam Retakes Explained
After exam results are released, students are allowed to retake exams to improve their scores. You can register as a retake candidate through your IB coordinator. It is very important that you speak directly with your IB Coordinator if you are considering retaking any IB examinations. While IB schools are not obligated to accept retake applications, many schools do provide students with this opportunity. Your coordinator will be the best point of contact, as they can advise you on the most appropriate course of action based on your individual situation. They can also guide you on which subjects or specific components may be most beneficial to retake, taking into account your academic goals, university requirements, and future career plans. Receiving tailored advice from your coordinator will ensure you make the most informed decision moving forward. That said, this guide will equip you with a clear overview of the process and provide comprehensive information to support you as you plan your next steps, so keep reading!

When do IB Retakes take place?
There is no specific ''retake session'' nor are there special ''retake papers''. Students retaking exams will simply sit them along other students in the future examination sessions. Students have the option to retake their IB examinations during either the May or November session. For example, if you originally sat your exams in May, you may choose to retake them in the following November session or wait until the next May session. The same applies if your original session was in November – you may resit the exams in the upcoming May session or in the next November session, depending on what works best for you.

How many times can I resit?
There is no limit for resits. You can resit exams as many times as you wish. The retakes also do not have to take place consecutively. So for example if you sat your exams in May you can retake in the November session and then again in the next November session next year.

Do I have to retake all exams at the same time?
First of all, you do not need to retake all exams. You can retake only the exams you wish. There is also no need to sit all of them in one session. So for example if you want to retake Economics and Chemistry, you can retake Economics in the upcoming session and wait with Chemistry for the session after that. The choice is fully yours. The way you organise your resits is totally up to you.

When is the best time to resit?
Deciding when to resit is ultimately a personal choice, and the best time is when you feel most prepared and confident. That said, in most cases we recommend resitting in the very next exam session. With six months between sessions, you have time to rest and recover from your initial exams, then return to revision while the material is still fresh in your mind. Resitting sooner also allows you to receive your new grades earlier, helping you meet university entry requirements without unnecessary delays.

School vs exam centre
If your school only offers examinations in one session (e.g., only May or only November), you may not be able to resit in a different session at your school. However, you can still register as a candidate at a dedicated IB exam centre. Speak to your IB Coordinator for the exact details and procedures.

Syllabus changes
Keep in mind that IB syllabi are updated every few years. If a syllabus change is approaching, it is usually best to resit in the very next session to ensure you sit the exam under the same format and content structure you originally studied. If the change cannot be avoided, don’t panic – while exam formats may shift, the overall subject knowledge remains largely the same, with only minor changes. With proper preparation, adapting to a new syllabus is very manageable.
Application deadlines
If you sat your exams in May, applied to UK universities, and missed your offer conditions, the November session is strongly recommended. This is because November results are released on January 6, just over a week before the UCAS application deadline, giving you the chance to apply with your updated grades in the same admissions cycle.

Can you retake IAs?
Yes, you can also choose to retake Internal Assessments (IAs). The IB does not require you to repeat all components of a subject when resitting. Instead, you have the flexibility to retake only the external assessments (written exams), only the internal assessment (IA), or both, depending on what will best improve your overall grade. For specific details, make sure to speak to your IB Coordinator.

Can you retake IB Core?
Yes, you can also retake the Extended Essay (EE) and Theory of Knowledge (TOK) components. For the TOK Essay, keep in mind that the prescribed titles (prompts) change each examination session, so you will need to select a new prompt when rewriting your essay. For the Extended Essay, you may either remain in the same subject area or choose a completely different one. However, your new EE must be substantially different from any work you have previously submitted – it cannot simply be a revised version of your original essay. This ensures that your resubmission represents original work that meets IB requirements. For more information, speak to your school's IB Coordinator.

Can you retake CAS?
Yes, it is possible to retake your CAS. The requirements remain the same.

Is resitting worth it?
The answer depends on your goals and circumstances. If you need to improve your score in order to meet university entry requirements, then resitting is absolutely worthwhile. Achieving the necessary grades can open the door to your dream university and significantly shape your future opportunities. On the other hand, if you have already achieved a strong score that meets the entry requirements of your chosen universities, then retaking is usually unnecessary. Resitting in this case may only add extra stress and require considerable time and effort that could instead be invested in other valuable pursuits – such as developing new skills, gaining work experience, improving your CV, traveling, or exploring personal projects and interests. Ultimately, the decision is personal. If improving your score feels meaningful to you, you should pursue it. If not, focusing on your next steps in life may be the wiser choice.

Resit costs
The cost of resitting exams can vary depending on your school or exam centre. It is therefore important to speak directly with your IB Coordinator to get accurate information on the fees that apply to you.

Retake registration deadline
The registration deadline for retakes is usually around three weeks after results are released. This gives you some time to consider your options. However, if you are thinking about retaking, it is important to contact your IB Coordinator as soon as possible. Reaching out early allows you to discuss your options thoroughly and ensures that your coordinator has enough time to provide tailored advice and complete the registration process without unnecessary stress.
How to prepare for IB resits?
Reflect on your previous performance – Review your exam results, teacher feedback, and personal experience. Identify which areas you struggled with most, whether it was content knowledge, exam technique, time management, or nerves. This reflection will guide your revision plan and ensure you focus on the areas with the highest potential for improvement. Check for syllabus changes – Before you start revising, make sure to verify whether the syllabus for any of your subjects has changed since your last exam. If it has, focus your preparation on the updated content and exam format to ensure you are fully prepared. Set clear goals – Decide which subjects and components you are retaking and what grades you are aiming for. Keep in mind your university requirements so you know the exact score you need to achieve. Create a structured study plan – Build a realistic timetable that balances review, practice, and rest. Prioritise weaker topics while still reviewing the material you are confident in. Break tasks into small, manageable goals to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Practice with past papers – Use official IB past papers to familiarise yourself with question styles and exam timing. Mark your answers against official markschemes to see where you lose points and how to improve. Simulate exam conditions whenever possible to build exam confidence. Revise actively, not passively – Use techniques such as summarising notes, teaching concepts aloud, creating flashcards, or practicing essay plans. Focus on application of knowledge rather than just memorisation. Seek guidance and support – Work closely with your IB Coordinator and teachers for tailored advice. Consider tutoring if you need additional help in specific areas. Look after yourself – Don’t underestimate the importance of rest, exercise, and good nutrition. Manage stress by balancing revision with relaxation and hobbies. A healthy mindset will make your preparation far more effective. Learn from the past, but move forward – Avoid dwelling on mistakes from your first attempt and see them as lessons that will help you succeed this time. Approach your resits with fresh determination and motivation. We hope you found this post helpful. This post is here to offer clarity on the IB grading system so that you can plan your efforts accordingly.
What is a good IB score?
In the IB Program, you can receive a total of 45 points. The majority of them come from the 6 subjects graded on a scale from 1 to 7 (6 x 7 = 42), and the remaining 3 derive from your EE and TOK grades according to the matrix below:

EE/TOK

A

B

C

D

E

A

3

3

2

2

X

B

3

2

2

1

X

C

2

2

1

1

X

D

2

1

0

0

X

E

X

X

X

X

X

Beware! Being awarded an E from either EE or TOK is a failing condition.

IB passing conditions:

CAS requirements are met.

The candidate has achieved at least 24 total points.

A grade has been awarded in all subjects, TOK and EE.

A grade of at least a 2 has been awarded in all subjects.

There are no more than two grade 2s awarded (SL or HL).

There are no more than three grade 3s or below awarded (SL or HL).

The candidate has at least 12 points on HL subjects.

Candidates have at least 9 points on SL subjects.

How to classify your score?
38 points is probably the minimum if you aim for top universities, and 40+ for very competitive schools. In the May 2023 session, the average score was around 30 points, and the total points distribution was the following:

0-23 - fail (16,10%)

24-29 - sub-average (28,30%)

30-34 - mediocre (26,95%)

35-39 - good (19,78%)

40-45 - very good (8,87%), 42+ can be considered outstanding

We highly recommend checking the requirements of your university and the specific course that you will be applying to! Usually, you will be given a minimal score out of the 45 total and requirements for Higher Level subjects, for instance, a minimum of 38 points and 7/6/6 from HLs. When it comes to specific examples, see the table below. Keep in mind that these are only estimates, and any admissions decisions are made based on a variety of factors other than your IB score, such as extracurricular activities, personal statements, supplemental essays, and reference letters.

Top US Universities

Typical IB Score Required

Harvard

42

Princeton

42

Yale

40

Columbia

40

Brown

40

Stanford

40

Duke

40

MIT

40

UPenn

38

Cornell

38

Dartmouth

37

Northwestern

37

UC Berkeley

37

UCLA

37

NYU

37

U Chicago

36

We hope this post was helpful! What is a good IB score?

Whether you're just starting your IB journey or are already well underway, you've probably come across the term 'Predicted Scores.' In this post, we’ll break down what IB Predicted Scores are, why they matter, and everything else you need to know!
IB Predicted Scores Explained

What are IB Predicted Scores?
IB Predicted Scores are the grades your teachers expect you to achieve in your final IB exams. They are based on your performance throughout the course.

Why are Predicted Scores important?
Predicted Scores are crucial because they are a key part of your university applications and play a major role in determining whether you receive offers. All UK universities, along with many European universities, consider Predicted Scores when making their decisions. Even if your chosen universities don’t factor them in, your Predicted Scores can still help you identify your strengths and highlight areas where you need to improve for your final exams.
What happens if my final score does not match my predicted score?
If your final IB score is lower than your predicted score, it may not necessarily impact your university application, provided that you still meet the minimum entry requirements stated in your offer. Many universities focus primarily on whether applicants fulfill the overall IB score and any specific subject requirements outlined in their conditional offer, rather than expecting them to exactly match their predicted scores. This means that, in subjects where no specific grade was required, a lower score might be acceptable as long as your overall IB total and any specified grades for particular subjects meet the offer conditions. As a result, even with a lower-than-predicted IB result, your offer is generally secure as long as you satisfy these requirements.

How are IB Predicted Scores determined and how to maximise them?
IB Predicted Scores are determined based on the following:

Internal Class Tests: Regular class tests help teachers assess your ongoing grasp of the material.

Mock Exams: Mock exams are often given considerable weight, as they reflect the actual IB exam conditions.

Internal Assessment (IA) Drafts: IAs contribute to your final grade and hence IA drafts are also often used by teachers to help them decide on your predicted grade.

Class Participation and Engagement: Active participation in class can positively influence your predicted score.

While there is no strict formula for calculating predicted grades, many schools give extra weight to mock exams, as these more closely resemble the official IB exams. However, it’s also important to note that ultimately predicted grades are also a somewhat subjective decision of your teachers. To maximize your predicted grades, make sure to:

Prepare Thoroughly for Mock Exams: Since these exams are often weighed heavily, we highly recommend to prepare thoroughly for them to achieve top marks.

Be an Active Participant in Class: Engaging actively in discussions, asking questions, and showing genuine interest in the subject can leave a positive impression on your teachers.

Build Strong Relationships with Your Teachers: Positive relationships with teachers can make a difference in their overall perception of your potential.

Aim for a High-Quality Internal Assessment (IA): Your IA is a significant part of your subject grade, and hence a strong draft can boost your teacher's perception of your performance. To excel in your IA, make sure to check out our wide array of IA exemplars.

Excel in Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE): Although TOK and the EE are graded separately from your individual subject assessments, high scores in these components can elevate your overall IB score and increase teachers' confidence in your academic capabilities. Make sure to check out our EE and TOK exemplars to maximise your score.

CAROUSEL

When are Predicted Scores released?
Although there’s no official deadline for releasing Predicted Scores, most schools provide them around three months into DP2, as this aligns with the period when students begin submitting their university applications.
What if my Predicted Scores do not meet my expectations?
As mentioned earlier, Predicted Scores are based on a variety of factors, including mock exams, internal tests, and more. It’s important to give your best effort in these assessments. But what if your Predicted Scores fall short of your expectations or aren’t high enough for your university choices? In that case, we recommend speaking with your subject teacher. They can explain the reasoning behind your grade, and if they believe you're capable of achieving a higher score, they may offer an additional test or for instance ask you to revise your IA. If successful, your Predicted Score could be adjusted. We hope you found this post helpful. IB Predicted Scores Explained

If your IB exams are coming up and you’re unsure about what to bring – or what’s not allowed – you’re in the right place. In this post, we’ll cover everything you should bring to your exams and what you should avoid bringing to ensure a smooth session.

What to bring for an IB Exam?

Writing tools

Pens: Always carry at least two black or blue ink-based pens. Having a backup ensures that if one stops working, you can switch seamlessly without disrupting your rhythm or causing unnecessary stress. Avoid water-based pens, as they may not scan properly.

Pencils: Bring a pencil for subjects like Biology, where you may need to make sketches. Pencils are also essential for MCQ exams, as you’ll need to transfer your answers to an answer sheet. Make sure your pencils are 2B or 2HB; other types may not be read properly by the scanning machine.

Erasers and sharpeners: A clean eraser will help you keep your work neat, and a sharpener will ensure that your pencils are always ready.

Rulers and other geometric tools: It also may be a good idea to bring a ruler or other geometric tools, especially for subjects where you may be asked to create sketches.

Highlighters: You may also wish to bring highlighters to help you highlight important information in the source materials provided. However, make sure you use them only on materials that won't be marked by the IB.

Calculator

A calculator is required in certain subjects while it is prohibited in others. Generally speaking, you'll need a calculator for Mathematics and the Sciences.

The IB also only permits the use of certain calculator brands/types.

To check the subjects in which calculators are permitted and the types of calculators accepted by the IB, click here.

Before the exam, your calculator must be cleared or, if your model allows, set to exam mode.

Your school is also obligated to clear all calculators after each exam. This will occur in the IB-mandated post-exam 2-hour quarantine that has been recently introduced to prevent any cross-timezone academic dishonesty.

To ensure that your exam runs smoothly, make sure to check whether your calculator is fully charged the night before. It may also be a good idea to bring spare batteries to the examination room with you.

Water and snacks

Make sure to bring yourself a bottle of water to keep yourself hydrated during the exam. The water must however be carried in a clear, see-through bottle, with no labels.

Snacks are not permitted in the exam hall, however, if you have a short quarantine break in between Papers, you may leave a small snack (like a protein bar) in the quarantine room.

Watches

Students are not permitted to wear smartwatches in any exam. As of 2025, you are no longer permitted to bring a wristwatch to the examination hall, even if it is merely an analogue clock.

Pencil cases

Many students prefer to keep their exam essentials – such as pencils, pens, highlighters, and other tools – organised in a pencil case. During exams, you’re welcome to bring these items in a pencil case as long as it is completely transparent.

There are no other specific requirements, so if you don’t have a clear pencil case, a simple see-through plastic pouch or zip-lock bag is perfectly acceptable.

Comfort items

In order to promote student wellbeing, the IB also permits candidates to bring a comfort item, such as a small plushie or a small gift from relative.

What NOT to bring into an IB exam
The IB prohibits students from bringing the following into the exam hall:

Electronics (phone, tablet, laptop, etc.) other than an IB-approved calculator

Food

Drinks other than water

Loose papers or study notes

You are not permitted to bring your own formula booklets or other materials. All materials needed for the exam will be provided to you by the IB

Backpacks/purses

Books/guides

Correction tape

We hope you found this post helpful. As the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme intensifies, mock exams become a pivotal component of the preparation process. While some students may view mock exams as additional unnecessary stress, IB Mock Exams provide critical benefits and serve a crucial role. In this post we will explore the importance of IB Mock Exams and provide you with everything need to know about them.
IB Mock Exams
IB mock exams are practice tests administered to students to simulate the conditions and format of the final IB exams. These practice tests not only serve as a dry run for the final IB exams but also provide invaluable insights into one's readiness and areas for improvement.

IB Mocks - Importance
IB Mocks are extremely valuable as they offer a realistic preview of the final exams, helping students identify strengths and weaknesses, refine their exam strategies, and build confidence. Embracing mock exams as a valuable tool rather than a hurdle can significantly enhance exam readiness and contribute to overall success in the IB Diploma Programme. IB mocks serve not only as practice for the official exams but also provide teachers with a detailed insight into a student’s abilities. This information is crucial for determining predicted grades, which many universities use when considering applicants for admission. Hence, scoring well in IB Mock exams is crucial for a competitive university application.

How many mock sessions are there?
Typically, schools organize three mock exam sessions: one in the middle of DP1, one at the end of DP1, and one in the middle of DP2, typically 2-3 months before the official IB exams. The second and third mocks are arguably the most important. The second mock is crucial because teachers heavily consider these results when assigning predicted grades at the beginning of DP2. The third mock holds great significance as it provides students with a final opportunity to test their knowledge under exam conditions and identify areas for improvement before the final exams.

Mock Study Tips
As for the preparation for mock exams, schools will generally test students on only the material that has already been covered and hence the amount of time required to study for mocks will lengthen. For the first mock session, approximately two weeks of study should be sufficient to perform well. For the later mock exams, students are advised to begin preparing about a month in advance to ensure the best possible results. But what if I do poorly in my mocks? While mock exams are important, doing badly in a mock session isn't the end of the world! Mocks should be seen as learning opportunities to identify areas for improvement. There will also be plenty of other opportunities to demonstrate your capabilities to your teacher, such as class participation and in-class tests, allowing you to earn the predicted grades you truly deserve. Remember to always stay focused, keep a positive attitude, and use feedback constructively to improve your performance. With dedication and hard work, the sky is the limit! We hope you found this post helpful. IB Mock Exams

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is known for its rigour and high standards. While the program is designed to ensure students succeed at university, not everyone may achieve the results they hope for in all their chosen subjects. This post is here to outline what happens if you fail an IB subject and what you can do moving forward.
What Happens if You Fail an IB Subject?
IB subjects are graded on a scale of 1-7, with 7 being the highest. A subject is considered failed if the student receives a score lower than 3. To pass and earn the IB Diploma, students should meet the below requirements:

At least 24 points have been obtained.

Complete all the CAS requirements.

A grade from A-D has been obtained for both the TOK and the EE. A grade of E is considered a failing grade.

A grade of at least a 2 has been awarded in all subjects.

There are no more than two grade 2s awarded (SL or HL).

There are no more than three grade 3s or below awarded (SL or HL).

A total of at least 12 across HL subjects. If 4 subjects are taken at HL, the highest 3 grades will count towards this requirement.

A total of at least 9 across SL subjects. If 2 subjects are taken at SL, a total of at least 5 across both subjects must be obtained.

Scenarios of Failing a Subject

Single subject failure with 24 points or above: If your total score is above 24 but you have failed only 1 subject, you may still be eligible to receive the IB Diploma. This is reviewed on a case-by-case basis so you will need to discuss this with your school's IB coordinator.

Failing multiple subjects: If you score below 3 on more than 2 subjects or your overall score is below 24 points, the IB Diploma will not be awarded.

Failing the DP core: A grade of E on either the TOK or EE (or both) results in failing the DP core and the IBDP as a result. The IB Diploma will not be awarded even if your total score is above 24 points.

CAROUSEL

What to Do After Failing

Reassessment: The most viable option is to retake the IBDP in a subsequent session to see if you can improve your score and pass the IBDP. The IB holds sessions every 6 months (May and November), so you could either retake the IB within 6 months if you feel ready or within a year if you need more time to prepare.

Requesting a remark: If you have missed the passing grade only by a few points, you could request a remark to see if a different examiner scores you higher. However, you should be mindful that remark requests could lead to your grade going up, down, or staying the same.

We hope this guide has provided you with some useful information on what happens if you fail an IB subject. Are you looking for a detailed overview of the IB results from the November 2025 exam session? This post will provide an overview of the general trends, as well as more specific details for Math and Science subjects.
IB Results November 2025

General Trends
Overall performance was strongly in the middle achievement bands, with most candidates receiving grades between 4 and 6. Across all subjects combined, the overall mean subject grade was 4.6, confirming that results remained centred slightly above the passing threshold rather than being concentrated at the highest grade levels. At a subject-group level, clear performance differences were observed between disciplines. The sciences recorded a mean grade of 4.4 across 21,477 students, while mathematics recorded a lower mean grade of 4.1 across 17,295 students. By comparison, language acquisition and language and literature subjects showed higher average scores, reinforcing the recurring pattern that mathematically intensive and analytical subjects produced lower average grades and a wider range of results. A further trend observed in the data was the relatively small proportion of top grades in quantitative subjects. In both mathematics and the sciences, grades 6 and 7 accounted for a noticeably smaller share of results than grades 4 and 5, indicating that high-level mastery remained difficult to achieve.
Trends in Mathematics
In Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA), results were more widely dispersed and overall performance was lower than in the applied pathway. At Higher Level, 3,384 candidates achieved a mean grade of 5.1, while at Standard Level, 7,871 candidates achieved a considerably lower mean grade of 3.9. The distribution in both levels was strongly centred on grades 4 and 5, with comparatively fewer students achieving grades 6 and 7. In contrast, Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI) showed a more favourable and stable profile. At Higher Level, 642 students achieved a mean grade of 4.1, and at Standard Level, 5,398 students achieved a mean grade of 3.6. Although both AI levels still showed clustering in the middle bands, the proportion of students achieving grades 5 and above was slightly higher than in the AA pathway. Overall, the data confirmed that Mathematics AA remained the more academically demanding route, particularly at Standard Level, where the mean grade fell below 4.0. The applied and modelling-based structure of AI appeared to support more consistent performance for a broader range of candidates.
Trends in the Sciences
Across all science subjects combined, 21,477 students produced a mean grade of 4.4, placing the sciences below languages and close to mathematics in overall difficulty. Clear differences were observed between individual science disciplines and between Standard and Higher Level courses. Biology showed the strongest overall outcomes within the sciences. At Higher Level, 3,354 students achieved a mean grade of 4.6, while at Standard Level, 5,117 students achieved a lower mean grade of 3.8. This gap indicated that the additional content and analytical requirements at Higher Level were associated with a noticeable reduction in overall performance. Chemistry produced a more polarized profile. At Higher Level, 2,906 candidates achieved a comparatively high mean grade of 5.4, while at Standard Level, 3,098 candidates recorded a mean grade of only 4.1. This represented one of the largest HL–SL performance gaps in the sciences. Physics continued to be one of the most demanding science subjects. At Higher Level, 2,353 students achieved a mean grade of 5.0, whereas 2,317 Standard Level candidates achieved a mean grade of 4.0. In both levels, a large proportion of students were concentrated in grades 4 and 5, with a noticeably smaller share reaching grades 6 and 7. We hope this post has helped you learn more about the IB November 2025 results. Whether you're a student aiming for top scores or a parent trying to support your child's academic journey, having a clear grasp of how IB grades are determined is essential. This comprehensive guide will break down the IB grading system, equipping you with all the essential information you need to embark on your academic journey with confidence.
IB Grading System
The IB Diploma is a two-year course of study. All IB students take six subjects from different academic areas, with three subjects studied at the higher level (HL) and three at the standard level (SL). The IB Diploma is assessed on a scale with a maximum score of 45 points. In order to pass, students must achieve at least 24 points, with at least 12 points from HL subjects. It is important to mention that out of the 45 points, 42 points are attainable from subject grades, with the additional 3 points attainable from the IB Core Components.
Subject Grades
Each of the 6 IB subjects is graded on a scale from 1 to 7, with 7 being the highest possible score. The grades reflect the student's performance in both External and Internal Assessment.
External Assessment
The External Assessments are, as the name suggests, marked externally (i.e. not by the student's school) by examiners appointed by the IBO. External Assessments primarily consist of written exams, taken at the end of the course in DP2. Typically, subjects have 2-3 exam papers, with an additional paper for those taking the subject at the HL level. It is important to mention that some subjects, such as Music, may also include coursework in addition to written exams, with both components marked externally.
Internal Assessment
The Internal Assessment is an investigation into a topic chosen by the student that contributes to their final subject grade and is evaluated internally by the school. The Internal Assessment has a smaller weighting than the External Assessment, typically accounting for around 20%-30% of the overall subject grade. For more detailed information on the Internal Assessment and its weighting, grading and writing process, make sure to check out our blog post.

CAROUSEL

IB Core
In addition to subject grades, students may obtain up to 3 points from the IB Core Components. The IB Core consists of the Extended Essay, TOK, and CAS.
Extended Essay and TOK

The Extended Essay (EE) is a 4000 word-long research paper in which students investigate virtually any topic of their choice that relates to one of the 6 IB DP subject groups. In the Extended Essay, students produce an academic paper individually while being guided by a supervisor. The EE is then marked externally by examiners appointed by the IBO. To learn more about the EE, make sure to check out our blog post dedicated to it.

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is an additional subject which revolves around the exploration of knowledge questions, which are a key tool in the learning process. The grade from TOK is determined by the student's performance in the TOK Essay and TOK Exhibition. To learn more about TOK, make sure to check out our other blog post!

The Extended Essay and TOK are both graded from A to E, A being the best grade. The grades received from the EE and TOK determine the amount of points a student obtains out of the 3 available Core Points. The number of points is calculated using the table below:

EE/TOK Grade

A

B

C

D

E

A

3

3

2

2

Fail

B

3

2

2

1

Fail

C

2

2

1

0

Fail

D

2

1

0

0

Fail

E

Fail

Fail

Fail

Fail

Fail

CAS
CAS is a core component of the IB DP aimed at personal and interpersonal development, where students engage in creative projects, physical activities, and community service over two years, documenting their progress in a CAS portfolio. Although CAS does not contribute directly to the points total, the completion of CAS is a requirement for earning the IB Diploma.
How are grade boundaries determined?
Grade boundaries are the minimum marks needed to achieve a specific grade. IB grade boundaries aren't fixed. To ensure fairness across sessions, the IBO carefully examines the difficulty level of the exam as well as student performance and adjusts the boundaries accordingly. We hope you found this post helpful! IB Grading System

Just starting out your IB journey and heard the term 'predicted grades'? Unsure what they really are and how they differ from actual IB grades? Worry no more! In this post we'll explain these two types of grades IB students receive and explain the differences between them.

IB Predicted Grades vs Actual Grades

IB Predicted Grades

What are IB predicted grades?
IB predicted grades are the grades your teachers expect you to achieve in your final IB exams. They are based on your performance throughout the course.
Why are predicted grades important?
Predicted grades are crucial because they are a key part of your university applications and play a major role in determining whether you receive offers. All UK universities, along with many European universities, consider predicted scores when making their decisions. Even if your chosen universities don’t factor them in, your predicted scores can still help you identify your strengths and highlight areas where you need to improve for your final exams.
When are predicted grades released?
Although there’s no official deadline for releasing predicted grades, most schools provide them around three months into DP2, as this aligns with the period when students begin submitting their university applications.
How are IB predicted grades determined?
IB predicted grades are determined based on the following:

Internal Class Tests: Regular class tests help teachers assess your ongoing grasp of the material.

Mock Exams: Mock exams are often given considerable weight, as they reflect the actual IB exam conditions.

Internal Assessment (IA) Drafts: IAs contribute to your final grade and hence IA drafts are also often used by teachers to help them decide on your predicted grade. If you want to ensure you submit a very strong draft that will leave a strong impression on your teacher, make sure to submit it to Clastify's review service where you'll obtain actionable feedback from official IB Examiners.

IB Actual Grades

What are IB actual grades?
IB actual grades are the final, official results you receive on your diploma – a true reflection of your performance. Unlike predicted grades, which are primarily used for university applications, actual grades represent your true academic performance and are what ultimately matter. Once the official grades are released, predicted grades no longer hold any significance whatsoever, apart from being used by the IB in the process of verifying the accurcay of the actual grades.
Why are actual grades important?
Actual grades are very important because they’re the official results that appear on your IB diploma. They show your real academic performance and can be needed when applying for jobs, internships, or further studies. Universities may use them to check if you’ve met the conditions of your offers, and employers might ask for them during background checks or to understand your academic abilities. Unlike predicted grades, which are only used during the application process and when verifying final grades, actual grades matter in the long run and stay relevant throughout your academic and professional life.
When are actual grades released?
IB actual grades are officially released each year on July 5th, but students gain access to them on the following day, July 6th, around 2 p.m. UK Time. When it comes to the November session, from 2024 and onwards, the results will be released on the 16th of December.
How are IB actual grades determined?
The following make up your actual IB grades:

End-of-year exams: these usually account for around 70% – 80% of your final grade

Coursework (Internal Assessments, the EE, TOK): IAs usually account for 20% – 30% of your final grade. The EE and TOK determine your IB Core Points. To maximise your final grade, it’s essential to submit a strong, high-scoring IA. You can have your IA reviewed by an official IB Examiner, who will assess it against the official IB criteria and provide you with personalised, targeted feedback.

We hope you found this post helpful! If you're wondering about how many students fail the IB, you've come to the right place. In this post we will breakdown the IB fail rate for both the May and November sessions.

IB Diploma Fail Rate

Session

Fail Rate

May 2025

18.7%

November 2024

26.9%

May 2024

19.5%

November 2023

27.6%

May 2023

19.99%

November 2022

18%

May 2022

18.61%

November 2021

12.84%

May 2021

11.05%

November 2020

24.23%

May 2020

14.82%

November 2019

30.07%

May 2019

22.19%

November 2018

31.02%

May 2018

21.82%

At first glance, the statistics above might suggest that the November session is significantly more difficult, given its consistently higher fail rate – typically around 10 percentage points above that of the May session. However, this disparity can largely be attributed to the profile of students who sit the November exams. Many are from highly competitive, top-performing schools in the Southern Hemisphere, such as those in Singapore and Australia, where academic standards tend to be exceptionally high which drives grade boundaries up. We hope you found this post helpful. For students around the globe, the IB Results day marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and countless hours of study. Keep reading to find out when IB Results are released, how to access them and everything else you need to know!
IB Results Day
IB results are officially released each year on July 5th, but students gain access to them on the following day, July 6th, around 2 p.m. UK Time. When it comes to the November session, from 2024 and onwards, the results will be released on the 16th of December.

How do I access my results?
Once results become accessible to students, you can access them using this link. To view your grades you must login using your student personal code and a PIN provided by your IB Coordinator. Most schools will provide this information a few hours before the results are available. If your school hasn't done so, it's best to email your IB Coordinator for assistance.

What type of information will be available?
After logging into the results portal, the following information will be available:

the IB score

the grades achieved in individual subjects

the amount of marks scored in each subject along with the upper and lower grade boundaries

the grades obtained for the Extended Essay and TOK

How do I send my IB results to my chosen universities?
In some cases, such as for example UK universities, your IB results will be sent automatically to your university choices within a week. Other universities may however require you to provide them with your score in a different way. It is therefore best to check with your specific universities for their preferred method and ensure that you follow their instructions promptly. Keep in mind that with the huge amounts of candidate scores to process, universities may take several days or even weeks to confirm your place. If you have been waiting for an extended period of time and you're starting to get worried, it is best to contact your university.

What should I do if my IB results are lower than expected?
First and foremost, do not panic! There's a few options available that might help improve your situation. Firstly, if you missed your offer by a few marks, you may consider requesting an IB Category 1 remark. IB examiners often make minor mistakes when marking exams and if you're just a few points under the upper grade boundary there's a chance your grade may increase. For more detailed information on the IB Remark Procedure, make sure to check out our blog post. If your IB score is significantly lower than you expected, you may consider resitting the exams in the next session (in 6 months) or the session after that (in 12 months). Fortunately, you don't have to retake all your exams. You can choose which subjects to resit, allowing you to focus on improving specific scores without risking the grades in subjects you've already done well in. Additionally, some universities may go into clearing. Clearing allows students to apply for courses with available spots at universities, even if they didn't meet the conditions of their initial offers.
When will I receive my IB Diploma?
The physical IB Diploma is issued in Geneva, Switzerland, and typically arrives at schools about a month after the results are released. Once the diplomas arrive, students can collect them from their school. We hope you found this post helpful. Curious about when your school will release your predicted grades? You’re in the right place. In this post, we’ll break down the key deadlines and explain when predicted grades are typically made available.
IB Predicted Grades Deadline
IB Predicted Grades are the grades your teachers expect you to achieve in your final IB exams. There is no specific external deadline by which schools must issue predicted grades; however, most schools provide students with these grades around the third month of DP2 (typically in November or December for the May session, and in May or June for the November session). This timing aligns with university application deadlines. In countries such as the UK, predicted grades play a key role in the admissions process. The UCAS application deadline usually falls at the end of January, so predicted grades are communicated earlier to give students a clear sense of their standing and time to improve their performance if needed. If you are applying to universities with earlier deadlines, such as Oxford or Cambridge, where the application deadline is 15th October each year, you should inform your school as early as possible so they can issue your predicted grades in time. If you'd like to learn more about predicted grades, how to maximise them, how are they determined, and more, click here. We hope you found this post helpful. Whether you're wrapping up your IB journey or eagerly awaiting your final results, one crucial step remains – sending your IB scores to universities. In this post, we’ll walk you through how to send your IB results to universities in the UK , US, Netherlands, and more!
How to send IB results to universities?

US universities
In your final year of the IB Diploma Programme, with the assistance of your DP Coordinator, you can select up to six choices to receive your results automatically once they’re released. Be sure to include your U.S. college choices in these slots, as the IB sends the results directly to the selected universities, usually in early July for the May exam session. Most U.S. universities receive them electronically, but if a university doesn’t accept electronic delivery, you can request the IB to send the results via post. If you didn’t choose a university before the results were released or need to send them to additional institutions, you can request this through the IB portal for a fee.

UK universities
If you’ve applied to UK universities through UCAS, you don’t need to worry about sending your IB results yourself. You have six slots available before your exams to specify where your results will be sent, and it’s essential to include UCAS as one of these options. Once you do, UCAS will automatically distribute your scores to the universities you’ve chosen as your firm and insurance choices. Be sure to check with your IB Coordinator to confirm that UCAS is listed among your selections.
Dutch universities
To send your IB results to Dutch universities, start by checking the specific requirements of the universities you're interested in, as some may have particular procedures for international applicants. Generally, for most institutions, all you need to do is include them in the available slots in the IB student portal. The IB will then automatically send your results to the universities listed in the portal.
Irish universities
Sending your IB results to Irish universities is quite similar to the process for UK universities. Simply ensure that the CAO (Central Applications Office) is included in one of the six designated slots. CAO will then forward your results to the universities you’ve selected in your application.
Other universities
When applying to other universities, it’s important to check their specific requirements for sending IB results. In most cases, you will need to include them in the designated slots. Be sure to verify whether they accept electronic versions of your results; if not, notify your IB Diploma Programme Coordinator to arrange for the IB to send a physical copy. Remember, you can also request to send your results after results day through the IB portal, but be aware that this will incur an additional fee. We hope you found this post helpful! We’ve put together a comprehensive checklist to help you feel prepared, confident, and in control.
IB Exam Checklist

Before the exam season

Know the structure of each paper – understanding exactly what to expect will significantly enhance your preparation. Knowing the format and types of questions you'll encounter in each paper will allow you to focus your study more effectively, approach problems with greater confidence, and perform at your best.

Gather your study materials – collect your syllabus, notes, past papers, textbooks, and official IB documents so you don’t waste time searching when you should be studying.

Create a study schedule – a solid study plan helps you balance revision across all subjects and prevents last-minute cramming. Plan early, set realistic goals, and leave time for review.

Use effective study techniques – studying smarter, not harder, is key. Use methods like active recall, flashcards, timed past papers, or spaced repetition to improve retention and practice real exam skills.

One week before the exams

Finalize revision – focus on polishing your understanding and filling in any last-minute gaps. Use this time to refine weak areas, clarify doubts, and practice under exam conditions.

Prepare exam materials – avoid unnecessary stress on exam day by organizing your tools in advance. Make sure you have, a clear pencil case, a working calculator (if required), and a transparent water bottle with no labels.

Know your exam timetable – Double-check dates, times, subjects, and locations. This will give you peace of mind and allow you to avoid mistakes which can be incredibly costly.

Take care of yourself – good sleep, nutrition, and hydration are non-negotiable. IB mock exams offer an excellent opportunity to assess your skills and gain experience in exam conditions before the official assessments. In this post, we’ll share effective study tips to help you make the most of your IB mock exams and excel in them.
How to prepare for IB Mocks exams?

Study with the syllabus
Go over the syllabus for each subject to make sure you're clear on all the key concepts and learning objectives. Sometimes teachers may skip certain parts, not emphasize certain elements, or leave out important details, so it’s important to review the syllabus yourself to ensure you’ve covered everything required by the IB.

Focus on your weakest areas
Focus on the topics or subjects where you feel less confident, as you may not have time to study everything thoroughly, especially during your second and third mock exams. Prioritizing your weakest areas will give you a clearer understanding of where you stand and allow you to make the most progress before the official exams.

Practice with past papers
Use past IB exam papers and mark schemes to practice. This will help you become familiar with the format of the questions and verify your answers using the markschemes.
Simulate exam conditions
When practicing, try to replicate real exam conditions by timing yourself and working in a quiet, distraction-free environment. This will help you get used to the format and pressure of the exam, making you feel more confident and comfortable on the actual day. The more you practice under these conditions, the better you'll be at managing your time and staying focused during the real exam.

Create a schedule
Create a study plan that gives time to each subject and topic, breaking your sessions into smaller, manageable chunks. Stick to the schedule to cover everything you need, and remember to take regular breaks to prevent burnout and help the material sink in.

CAROUSEL

Stay organized
Keep all your study materials organized, including notes, textbooks, and practice papers. Use folders or digital tools to easily access and review your resources. An organized workspace and clear system will save you time when revisiting topics and prevent last-minute stress.
Start with the most challenging
Start your study sessions with the most challenging topics or subjects. Tackling difficult material when you're most focused and alert will make it easier to grasp complex concepts.
Prioritize well-being
Prioritize your well-being by making sure you get enough sleep, exercise, and rest. These are essential for boosting your brain’s ability to retain and understand new information. We hope you found this post helpful.
