My primary goal for this CAS experience is to enhance my chess skills, with a specific focus on improving my tactical play and strategic understanding - I plan to learn key opening such as the King's Gambit or the Sicilian Defence. To achieve this, I plan to join the school's chess club, where I can participate in regular practice sessions and benefit from the experience and guidance of more skilled players. Additionally, I will be using Chess.com to monitor my progress, tracking my rating and analyzing my games to identify areas for further improvement.&nbsp;This Description of Goals is effective as the student has identified their interests, skills and areas for growth as well as has created a plan for the CAS Experience, thus fulfilling the Investigation and Preparation stages of the 5 Stages of CAS framework. Also, through stating that the student would like to improve in tactical play the student has fulfilled the 1st Learning Outcome (''Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth''). The student has also fulfilled the 3rd Learning Outcome (''Demonstrate How to Plan and Initiate a CAS Experience'') by detailing a structured plan involving the school's chess club and Chess.com for tracking progress.&nbsp;&nbsp;First Reflection&nbsp;&nbsp;A few days into my CAS experience of mastering chess, I am filled with enthusiasm and a strong sense of motivation. Although I haven't made significant progress yet, I am excited about the journey ahead. Joining the school's chess club has already proven to be a great decision; I've met several experienced players who are eager to help me improve.&nbsp;&nbsp;I've been using Chess.com to track my games and monitor my rating, which gives me a clear view of my current skill level and highlights areas for improvement. Although my rating has recently dropped from 725 to 698, this decline can be attributed to my experimentation with the King's Gambit opening, a strategy I'm still mastering. Despite this setback, I am confident that with continued practice and refinement, I will see improvements in my performance.&nbsp;&nbsp;Second Reflection&nbsp;&nbsp;As I reach the midpoint of my CAS experience, I am pleased to see tangible improvements in my chess skills. My recent efforts to master the King's Gambit opening are starting to pay off, and I am becoming more comfortable and strategic with this approach. This progress is reflected in my Chess.com rating, which has risen to 867, a significant boost from my previous rating.&nbsp;&nbsp;The increase in my rating and my enhanced performance with the King's Gambit have greatly motivated me to continue my training. The student also strives to engage in an experience that aims to help those in need, thus fulfilling the 7th Learning Outcome (''Recognize and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions'').&nbsp;&nbsp;First Reflection&nbsp;&nbsp;As I embark on my CAS experience of walking my neighbor’s dog, I am filled with a sense of purpose and eagerness. My neighbor, who has difficulty walking due to her leg issues, relies on me to ensure her dog gets the exercise it needs. In the first few days, I have focused on establishing a regular walking routine, paying attention to the dog’s preferences. In the mornings I walk around the alleys and in the evenings usually take the dog to a nearby park where I let him off the leash so he can have some play time.&nbsp;Second Reflection &nbsp;&nbsp;My neighbor is grateful for the help, and it feels rewarding to know that my efforts are making a difference. Walking the dog in the mornings and evenings has sometimes been tough. I have to wake up earlier to get ready for school and have less time for studying and hobbies in the evenings. Despite these challenges, I have consistently ensured the dog gets its walks. This experience has taught me patience and the importance of consistency. I am more motivated than ever to continue this journey, knowing that I am helping both my neighbor and her dog. CAS Reflections Examples

For many students, understanding the requirements of the CAS component of the IB Programme can be a challenge. With so many differing opinions and pieces of advice floating around, it can be difficult to know what’s accurate and what’s not. Worry no more &nbsp;– &nbsp;Clastify is here to provide clear guidance and settle the confusion once and for all.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">IB CAS Requirements</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>CAS Experiences</h3>&nbsp;&nbsp;<h4>How many CAS Experiences do I need to complete?</h4>&nbsp;The IB requires students to complete experiences in all three CAS Strands (creativity, activity, and service). The IB however does not specify the amount of CAS Experiences one must engage in. The amount of CAS Experiences that is sufficient will vary depending on their duration and the level of involvement they require. Nevertheless, it is generally advised to complete at least 4 different experiences for each strand.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>What do I include in my CAS Portfolio?</h4>&nbsp;In the CAS Portfolio, students must document all of their CAS Experiences. When documenting CAS Experiences students should include a Description of Goals of the experience, evidence of the experience (for instance a photo, video etc.) as well as reflections which must demonstrate how the student has met the 7 Learning Outcomes:&nbsp;&nbsp;<ol><li>Identify Own Strengths and Develop Areas for Growth</li><li>Demonstrate That Challenges Have Been Undertaken, Developing New Skills in the Process</li><li>Demonstrate How to Plan and Initiate a CAS Experience</li><li>Show Commitment to and Perseverance in CAS Experiences</li><li>Demonstrate the Skills and Recognize the Benefits of Working Collaboratively</li><li>Demonstrate Engagement With Issues of Global Significance</li><li>Recognise and Consider the Ethics of Choices and Actions</li></ol>&nbsp;Note that each CAS Experience does not have to fulfill every Learning Outcome. Students must however achieve each Learning Outcome at least once throughout their CAS journey.&nbsp;&nbsp;When documenting experiences in the CAS Portfolio, students are advised to follow the 5 Stages of CAS framework:<ul><li>Investigation &nbsp;– &nbsp;In this initial stage, students identify their interests, skills, and areas for growth. Students participate actively in their chosen activities, applying their skills and knowledge while engaging with others. The action stage is where students put their plans into practice and work towards their goals.</li><li>Reflection &nbsp;– &nbsp;Reflection is a crucial part of the CAS framework, occurring throughout the CAS experiences. Students reflect on their activities, considering their achievements, challenges, and the impact of their actions. Reflection helps students gain insights, learn from their experiences, and make connections between their CAS activities and the CAS learning outcomes.&nbsp;</li><li>Demonstration &nbsp;– &nbsp;In the final stage, students showcase their CAS experiences and the learning outcomes they have achieved. This can take various forms, such as presentations, portfolios, or reports. Demonstration allows students to share their accomplishments, reflect on their personal growth, and highlight the value of their CAS journey</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;To get a better understanding of documenting CAS Experiences, make sure to check out our CAS Reflections Examples.<h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>How many Reflections do I need?</h4>&nbsp;For CAS Experiences which last for a longer period of time a minimum of three reflections and pieces of evidence is advised (one at the beginning, one mid-point, and a final one at the end). For CAS experiences that are brief, single events, one reflection and one piece of evidence are sufficient.&nbsp;&nbsp;<pre><code class="language-plaintext">CAROUSEL</code></pre><h3>&nbsp;</h3><h3>&nbsp;</h3><h3>CAS Duration&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;<ul><li>The IB does not specify for how long do students must engage in CAS experiences - it is up to the school's CAS Coordinator to decide upon that matter. Some schools may require students to fulfill a certain amount of hours dedicated to CAS experiences while other may require a certain amount of months during which students are engaged in CAS experiences&nbsp;</li><li>Whichever method of your school uses, remember that there should be no gaps in your CAS timeline - at any given point of the duration of CAS there should always be at least one ongoing experience&nbsp;</li><li>There is no official deadline for CAS. It is the school's CAS Coordinator decides on the internal deadline by which CAS must be completed (usually around 1-2 months before the exam session). If you’ve already been introduced to CAS, you’ve likely heard the term CAS Project. In this post, we will explain what a CAS Project is, helping you navigate your IB journey smoothly and confidently.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">IB CAS Project Explained</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;The CAS Project is an obligatory element of the IB CAS component - students must complete a CAS Project to pass CAS and obtain the IB Diploma.&nbsp;&nbsp;The CAS Project is a collaborative project undertaken by students which can address any single strand of CAS (Creativity, Activity or Service), or combine any two or all three strands. In the CAS Project, students undertake a meaningful initiative that culminates in a significant outcome. CAS Projects may often also address a community need - students may, for instance, provide help for those in need, raise money for charity or spread awareness of a pressing issue. For instance, an example of a CAS Project could involve organizing a school football tournament where participants pay an entry fee, and the proceeds are donated to a charity. In those 4 (or more) weeks, students must satisfy the 5 CAS Stages:<ul><li>Investigation – identify their interests, talents and areas for personal growth as well as outline a pressing issue that will be addressed through the CAS Project</li><li>Preparation – divide their roles and responsibilities as well as create a plan of action and timeline for their project</li><li>Action – execute their project&nbsp;</li><li>Reflection – meaningfully reflect on their goals throughout the project. highlighting what went well and what could have been improved</li><li>Demonstration – evaluate the entire project, describe the things they have learned and reflect on the impact of their project, share their experience through their CAS Portfolio&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;Students must document this entire process. Since CAS is assessed internally, be sure to speak with your school's CAS Coordinator for detailed information on the form in which the CAS Project is expected to be recorded at your school.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>When must a CAS Project be completed?</h3>&nbsp;The CAS Project can be completed at any point during the duration of the IB Diploma Program. In this post we will clarify this term to ensure it no longer troubles you.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">IB CAS Hours</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The term CAS Hours refers to the number of hours a student must dedicate to CAS experiences in order to successfully complete their CAS. Previously, the IBO mandated that students engage in at least 150 hours of CAS experiences. However, this target was abolished a few years ago. Currently, the IBO does not specify a required number of CAS hours; instead, the organization allows individual schools to determine their own CAS requirements.&nbsp;&nbsp;Some schools may still adhere to the 150 hour requirement while others may adopt a different method of assessing CAS, sometimes one that doesn't even take into consideration the amount of hours. IB CAS Hours Requirements

If you're getting ready to embark on your CAS Project, you have come to the right place. In this post, we will provide you with all the requirements you must satisfy to successfully complete your CAS Project.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">CAS Project Requirements</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;<h4>Duration&nbsp;</h4>&nbsp;Students complete one CAS Project that must last at least 4 weeks.&nbsp;<h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>CAS Stages</h4>&nbsp;In those 4 (or more) weeks, students must satisfy the 5 CAS Stages:<ul><li>Investigation – students identify their interests, talents and areas for personal growth as well as identify a pressing issue that needs to be addressed&nbsp;</li><li>Preparation – students divide their roles and responsibilities as well as create a plan of action and timeline for their project</li><li>Action – students execute their project&nbsp;</li><li>Reflection – students create reflections throughout the project&nbsp;</li><li>Demonstration – students evaluate on the entire project, describe the things they have learned and reflect on the impact of their project, share their experience through their CAS Portfolio&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;For more information on the CAS Project Stages, make sure to check out our <a href="/blog/cas-project-stages" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">IB CAS Project Stages post</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>Reflections and evidence</h4>&nbsp;A minimum of three reflections and pieces of evidence is required for the CAS Project. In this post, we'll break down what the proposal is and the essential elements it must include.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">CAS project proposal form explained</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;The CAS project proposal form is the first document where students outline their CAS project idea. It must include key details about the project and receive approval from the school's CAS supervisor before students can begin executing their project.&nbsp;&nbsp;Although the IB does not provide a specific rubric, the proposal is typically created as a Word document and should include the following information:<h3>&nbsp;</h3><h3>Basic information&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;In this section the students should include the following information:<ul><li>The names of the students involved&nbsp;</li><li>The date of submission of the proposal&nbsp;</li><li>The title of the project&nbsp;</li><li>The supervisor's name and contact information&nbsp;</li><li>Start and end date (does not have to be very specific)</li></ul>&nbsp;<h3>Project description&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;In this section students should provide an overview of their project. Students should outline what the project is, its intended impact and the goals students aim to achieve. Students should also mention why they have chosen to engage in this particular project and how it aligns with their interests, skills, or values. Essentially, students must demonstrate personal motivation and the meaningfulness of the project.&nbsp;<h3>CAS strands</h3>&nbsp;Students should identify which CAS strands (Creativity, Activity, Service) the project covers and how are exactly are they addressed. Note that the CAS project may focus on one, two, or even all three of the strands.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>Learning outcomes</h3>&nbsp;It is also imperative you identify which of the seven learning outcomes (Identify strengths and develop areas for growth, Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, Initiate and plan a CAS experience, Show commitment to and perseverance in CAS experiences, Demonstrate skills and recognize the benefits of collaboration, Engage with global issues, Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions) are addressed by your CAS project. It is important you detail how exactly these learning outcomes will be fulfilled. While it is not required to meet all learning outcomes, we advise to fulfill at least 4.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>Planning and timeline</h3>&nbsp;Outline all key stages of your CAS project (investigation, preparation, action reflection, and demonstration) and mention what and how will it be done for each stage. Make sure to also create a timeline and set deadlines, keeping in mind that the CAS project must last 4 weeks.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>Roles and responsibilities</h3>&nbsp;Detail each person's role in the project. Make sure to mention how the interplay of the distributed responsibilities will shape a comprehensive and impactful CAS project.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>Resources required</h3>&nbsp;Mention any resources or funding that will be required for your project. The CAS Project consists of five essential stages. Over the course of their four-week project, students are required to demonstrate how they have successfully completed each of these stages. In this post, we will outline the five stages and explain what they involve.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">CAS Project Stages&nbsp;</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The five stages of the CAS Project are as follows:<ol><li>Investigation&nbsp;</li><li>Preparation&nbsp;</li><li>Action&nbsp;</li><li>Reflection&nbsp;</li><li>Demonstration&nbsp;</li></ol>&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>Stage 1: Investigation&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;In the first stage students identify their interests, talents and areas for personal growth as well as a pressing issue that needs to be addressed.&nbsp;&nbsp;For instance, a student passionate about helping those in need might decide to help the homeless in their neighbourhood. In the first stage they'll collect relevant information such as identifying areas where they are primarily concentrated and the key challenges they face, like food insecurity or lack of access to clean water. The student could reach out to local shelters or social services to understand the community's needs better and gather insights from individuals experiencing homelessness to ensure the project addresses their most pressing concerns.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>&nbsp;</h3><h3>Stage 2: Preparation &nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;In this stage students divide their roles and responsibilities as well as create a plan of action and timeline for their project.&nbsp;&nbsp;For instance, after gathering information, the students find that apart from food insecurity the homeless also suffer great risk during the winter when the temperature drops. As a result, students may decide to organise a soup kitchen initiative in order to provide the homeless with warm meals as well as deliver blankets and clothes to keep them warm during the cold winter months.&nbsp;&nbsp;At this stage, students would develop a detailed plan of action. They would decide precisely how they will collect clothing, obtain soup, and determine the best time to distribute these items to the homeless. For instance, they would need to establish a strategy for gathering clothes – such as initiating a campaign where students in their school donate items of their own – and outline how they will communicate their initiative to the school community. Similarly, they would plan how the soup will be provided, whether by purchasing it or preparing it themselves. Additionally, they must determine how to fund the project; for example, organizing a sports competition with an entry fee, with the proceeds going toward the soup kitchen initiative.&nbsp;&nbsp;The students must also assign roles and responsibilities, ensuring that each CAS Project member has clearly defined duties. This is crucial as it demonstrates that every member actively participated and made meaningful contributions to the project.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>&nbsp;</h3><h3>Stage 3: Action&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;In this stage students execute their planned CAS Project.&nbsp;&nbsp;In this stage, students would put their plan into action by actively participating in the soup kitchen initiative. They would start collecting clothing donations as planned and organizing them for distribution. At the same time, they would arrange for the soup, whether by cooking it themselves or sourcing it from elsewhere. They would also handle logistics, such as transportation, setting up the location, and creating a welcoming space for the homeless. Each student would focus on their assigned roles to ensure the project runs smoothly and achieves its goals.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<pre><code class="language-plaintext">CAROUSEL</code></pre><h3>&nbsp;</h3><h3>Stage 4: Reflection&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;The reflection stage requires students to consistently document their thoughts, experiences, and progress throughout the entire CAS project process. This ongoing reflection is essential as it ensures that every step of the project is recorded, providing proof of each participant's effort. Students are advised to use various means of documentation, including written reflections, photos, videos etc.&nbsp;<h3>&nbsp;</h3><h3>Stage 5: Demonstration</h3>&nbsp;In the demonstration stage, students would evaluate their experiences and the overall impact of the project. They would reflect on what went well, the challenges they faced, and how they overcame them.&nbsp;&nbsp;It is also crucial for students to identify which of the seven <a href="/blog/ib-cas-learning-outcomes" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">learning outcomes </a>were achieved in the context of the soup kitchen project. CAS Project Stages

CAS is a crucial part of the IB Diploma Programme, yet its ungraded nature often leaves students wondering – can you actually fail CAS? In this post, we’ll clear up any confusion and set the record straight.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">Can you fail IB CAS?</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;As mentioned, CAS is not graded, but meeting its requirements is essential. While students don’t receive a specific score, it is indeed possible to fail CAS. This can happen for several reasons, such as not completing the CAS project, participating in too few experiences, failing to meet the learning outcomes, or providing insufficient evidence and documentation. &nbsp;&nbsp;Your school’s CAS coordinator is responsible for determining whether you pass or fail. Fortunately, they will typically give you notice if your CAS portfolio is not meeting the required standards. Since CAS can usually be completed up to one or two months before final exams, students have plenty of time to ensure their portfolio is in good shape. &nbsp;&nbsp;So, what happens if you fail CAS? Unfortunately, failing CAS means an automatic failure of the entire IB Diploma – regardless of how well you perform in your exams. Can you fail IB CAS?

If you're wondering what's the difference between the CAS Project and CAS experiences, you've come to the right place. In this post, we will compare the two, providing you with the necessary information to embark on your CAS journey with confidence.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">CAS Project vs Experience</h2>&nbsp;<h3>&nbsp;</h3>CAS Experiences are short-term or ongoing activities that students undertake, focusing on the three strands of CAS – Creativity, Activity, and Service. These experiences are often smaller and more regular. For creativity, students may for instance learn how to cook; for activity, take up a new sport; and for creativity, for instance, learn to play a new instrument.&nbsp;&nbsp;The CAS Project on the other hand is a larger, more structured endeavour that students must complete in a group. The CAS Project requires in-depth planning and preparation. Students might, for example, decide to organize a school basketball tournament with an entry fee, the proceeds of which would be used to set up a soup kitchen initiative for those in need.&nbsp;<h3>&nbsp;</h3><h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>Quantity</h4>&nbsp;CAS Project: Students must only complete one CAS Project.&nbsp;&nbsp;CAS Experiences: The IB does not set a minimum number of Experiences that students must complete. Ultimately, the school's CAS supervisor is responsible for assessing students' CAS. However, it is generally recommended that students complete at least four different Experiences for each strand.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h4>Duration</h4>&nbsp;CAS Project: The CAS Project must last at least 4 weeks. In those 4 weeks students must fulfil all <a href="/blog/cas-project-stages" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">CAS Project Stages</a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;CAS Experiences: On the other hand, there is no set duration for CAS Experiences. As mentioned, the IB gives quite a lot of freedom to the school's CAS Coordinator to manage and assess the CAS Project and therefore it is up to them to decide on the duration of CAS. Some schools may require students to fulfill a certain amount of hours dedicated to CAS experiences while other may require a certain amount of months during which students are engaged in CAS experiences. Whichever method of your school uses, remember that there should be no gaps in your CAS timeline - at any given point of the duration of CAS there should always be at least one ongoing experience&nbsp;&nbsp;<pre><code class="language-plaintext">CAROUSEL</code></pre>&nbsp;&nbsp;<h4>Reflections and evidence</h4>&nbsp;CAS Project: A minimum of three reflections and pieces of evidence is required for the CAS Project. Students are however encouraged to include more.&nbsp;&nbsp;CAS Experiences: For CAS Experiences which last for a longer period of time a minimum of three reflections and pieces of evidence are advised (one at the beginning, one mid-point, and a final one at the end). For CAS experiences that are brief, single events, one reflection, and one piece of evidence are sufficient.<h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>CAS Strands</h4>&nbsp;Both for the Project and Experiences, students are not required to cover all three CAS strands at once. A CAS Project or Experience can focus on one, two, or all strands. However, students must engage with each strand at least once over the course of their CAS journey.&nbsp;<h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>&nbsp;</h4><h4>Deadline</h4>&nbsp;Both the CAS Project and Experiences do not have an official deadline. It is the school's CAS Coordinator that decides on the internal deadline by which the CAS Project and CAS Experiences must be complete. CAS Project vs Experiences

One of the components of the CAS Assessment is the CAS Project. It is a collaborative series of sequential CAS experiences, engaging students in one or more of the CAS strands of creativity, activity, and service. If you are an IB Diploma student, you already know that the Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) program is a huge part of your life outside the traditional classroom. But while you are busy planning your CAS project, practicing an instrument, or volunteering, there is one person that you must build a good relationship with – your CAS Supervisor. In this post, we'll break down exactly who this person is, why they matter, and how to work with them effectively.&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;"> IB CAS Supervisor Explained</h2> &nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Who is a CAS Supervisor?</h3> A CAS Supervisor is an adult who oversees and validates a specific CAS experience you are undertaking. A CAS Supervisor is not the same person as your school’s main CAS Coordinator. Your Coordinator manages the entire school's program, while your Supervisor is the person directly on the ground with you for a specific activity. For example, if you are coaching a junior soccer team for your "Activity" strand, your Supervisor might be the head coach of the club. If you are taking pottery classes for "Creativity," it could be your art teacher or studio instructor.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Who Can Be a CAS Supervisor?</h3> The IB is incredibly strict about this rule to ensure the integrity of your portfolio:&nbsp;<ul><li data-list-item-id="ed8f5d7c8e46b23b4fa9485f944af62a9">Who it can be – A teacher, a club leader, a coach, a camp counsellor, or a community supervisor. It must be a responsible adult who is present during your activity and can confirm that you have completed it effectively.&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li data-list-item-id="e2db0b7b35f4ecd8d0726f766680c86a8">Who it cannot be – Your parents, siblings, or friends. Even if your mom is the certified instructor of your yoga class, the IB will not accept her signature. You must find an independent adult to vouch for you.</li></ul>&nbsp;If you are doing a self-directed activity where an adult isn't physically there (e.g. teaching yourself to cook at home), you generally won't have a traditional supervisor. Instead, you will need to discuss with your CAS Coordinator beforehand how to provide solid evidence (like videos, photos, or logs) instead of a supervisor's report.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">What Does the CAS Supervisor Do?</h3> Your CAS Supervisor has three main jobs:&nbsp;<ul><li data-list-item-id="e89dba390a6fa2c8944b518f4619e872e">Safety and Guidance – They make sure you are actually showing up, staying safe, and behaving appropriately during the CAS experience.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li data-list-item-id="ee583ef5a0647984a522aee0fb2a511ce">Mentorship – They are there to offer advice on completing the CAS activity. If you hit a roadblock, a good supervisor will help you problem-solve and identify what CAS learning outcomes you developed from the experience.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li data-list-item-id="e9c88f0c95879c3ea01f38971e8af4e79">The Final Review – At the end of your experience, they need to verify that you completed the hours or goals you set out to achieve. This is usually done via a quick online form or an email confirmation sent through your school’s CAS tracking platform (e.g. ManageBac).</li></ul>&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;"> How to Build a Good Relationship with your CAS Supervisor</h3><h3 style="text-align:justify;">&nbsp;</h3>Managing your CAS supervisors doesn't have to be difficult if you follow a few basic professional habits, as outlined here:&nbsp;<ul><li data-list-item-id="e9f202728d4705a6acda6d9e74f129035">Ask them before you start – Never add an adult's email address into your CAS portal without asking them first. Give them a quick heads-up about what CAS is and what will be expected of them.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li data-list-item-id="e7c4216066ef33419c86045cdab4eb3d7">Keep them in the loop – If you are going to miss a session of the activity or if your project goals change midway, communicate with your supervisor early. While many students focus entirely on their final written exams, there is one crucial milestone you cannot afford to overlook – the IB CAS Final Interview.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">IB CAS Final Interview</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;The CAS final interview is a mandatory conversation with your CAS coordinator or advisor, and is the formal conclusion of your Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) requirement.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Why is the CAS Final Interview Important?</h3> The CAS final interview is not just a formality, but a core component of the IB program. The IB values holistic education, and CAS is designed to develop your character outside the classroom. You cannot achieve your IB Diploma without successfully completing CAS. This interview serves as the official sign-off by your coordinator, confirming you have met all <a href="/blog/ib-cas-requirements">requirements</a>. The interview is your opportunity to prove that you have achieved the <a href="/blog/ib-cas-learning-outcomes">seven distinct CAS learning outcomes</a>, ranging from identifying your own strengths to demonstrating global engagement. The CAS coordinator will specifically look for evidence of your long-term commitment over the 18 months of the program and verify that your reflections genuinely show personal development, rather than just summarizing what you did.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">How to Prepare for Your CAS Final Interview</h3> Entering your interview unprepared can lead to difficulty articulating your achievements. Use these strategies to ensure a smooth conversation:&nbsp;<ul><li data-list-item-id="e5680a62b1f594f8fe0f6f6222f184e9a">Go Over Your CAS Portfolio – Before the interview, make sure your portfolio is perfectly up to date. Are you currently an IB student or thinking of pursuing IB? If so, you have probably heard about CAS, which makes up the IB Diploma Programme core requirements along with the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge. If you want to learn more about what IB CAS entails, this post is for you! Keep reading for more details about CAS, such as deadlines, requirements, and ideas for activities you can do.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">What is IB CAS?</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">Overview</h3>&nbsp;&nbsp;CAS stands for Creativity, Activity, Service and is a core part of the IB Diploma Programme. CAS is designed to develop well-rounded students and ensure that IB learners develop themselves beyond academics. CAS promotes personal growth through experiential learning, requiring students to participate in activities in each of the following categories:&nbsp;<ul><li>Creativity – Engaging in arts, music, drama, writing, or other innovative projects.&nbsp;</li><li>Activity – Participating in physical activities like sports, dance, or outdoor adventures.&nbsp;</li><li>Service – Volunteering and community work to develop social responsibility and give back to the community.&nbsp;</li></ul>CAS is not graded but its completion is mandatory for earning the IB diploma. You can think of CAS as being "graded" on a Pass/Fail basis. Failing CAS can mean that you do not obtain the IB Diploma even if you have an overall passing mark. CAS is designed to help students meet certain learning outcomes such as identifying their strengths and weaknesses, planning a CAS project, showing commitment, and engaging with global issues. Students are expected to complete experiences in all three strands of CAS. Although there is no maximum or minimum number of experiences, students should aim to have at least 4 in each category. At least one reflection must be included per activity. However, if a student participated in an activity for an extended period, they may have to include 2-3 reflections to show their progress throughout the experience. CAS reflections must show evidence of reflective and critical thinking and should not simply be descriptions of what the activity consisted of. There is also no fixed minimum number of CAS hours that students need to complete. In previous years, a minimum of 150 hours was required, although this requirement has now been removed. However, some schools may still require students to submit these many hours, depending on the IB coordinator. Students should always make sure to check their school's policies regarding the CAS hours requirement and deadlines to avoid making any mistakes that could lead to failing CAS. It is a collaborative project between at least 2 students that can address any single strand of CAS (Creativity, Activity or Service), combine any two strands, or even include all three strands. The CAS project should have meaningful outcomes and help students grow and give back to the community.
