What Is Digital Society?

You will also examine the idea that there may be multiple digital societies rather than one universal digital society. An important part of this discussion is the digital divide, which highlights the uneven access that different people and communities have to digital systems. You will investigate major milestones in the development of digital technologies, including:

  • Microprocessors

  • Personal computers

  • The internet

  • Online social networks

  • Mobile computing

  • Cloud computing

 

These developments provide historical context for understanding how contemporary digital systems emerged and how technological change has influenced society.

 

The course also introduces the fundamental difference between analogue and digital information. Analogue systems represent continuous physical qualities and signals, while digital systems represent information through discrete signals with a finite set of values. Digitization involves converting analogue data and information into digital form, as well as using digital systems to change the structure or operation of an organization. Examples can include digital preservation, digital archives, and the disruption of traditional education, businesses, and organizations through digitalization.

The IB describes these as perspectives that can be used to investigate digital society. You are not expected to memorize an exhaustive definition of every concept. Instead, you should develop an informed understanding of how different concepts can help you investigate digital systems and their consequences.

 

Change

 

Change refers to evolution, transformation, adaptation, or movement from one form, state, or value to another. You will investigate how technological developments transform societies over time and consider the forces that drive digital change. This includes examining technological revolutions, innovation, historical patterns, and possible future developments. You may also consider whether technological progress is necessarily positive and whether new technologies represent continuity with the past or a significant departure from established ways of doing things.

 

Key takeaway – When using Change, focus on what is changing, why it is changing, who is driving the change, and what its consequences may be for the future.

 

Expression

 

Expression concerns the representation of ideas, emotions, and experiences through different forms and media. You will explore how digital systems influence communication, storytelling, creativity, artistic innovation, and political activism. Digital technologies can bring communities together and provide new ways of expressing ideas, but they can also create dilemmas surrounding what forms of expression should be permitted.

Identity

Identity helps define individuals, groups, communities, and social entities. Power

 

Power refers to the ability of an individual or group to influence or control the actions of others. You will investigate how power operates through digital systems and how it can be embedded within organizations, institutions, and governments. Key takeaway – When studying Power, ask who has control, who benefits, who is excluded, and how digital systems influence the distribution of power.

 

Space

 

Space explores how people experience physical, geographic, cultural, social, and virtual environments. You will consider:

  • Local, regional, national, and global scales

  • Relationships between physical and virtual spaces

 

The concept encourages you to examine how digital systems change people's experiences of location and space.

Systems

 

Systems provides a framework for understanding interconnected elements within human, natural, and built environments. You will explore how digital systems interact with social systems and how changes within one part of an interconnected system can create both intended and unintended consequences. Models, maps, and visualizations can also help reveal relationships within and between systems.

 

Key takeaway – Systems requires you to look beyond individual technologies and consider how different people, technologies, organizations, and environments interact as interconnected systems.

 

Values and Ethics

 

Values and Ethics explores distinctions between concepts such as right and wrong, fair and unfair, just and unjust, and legal and illegal. You will examine how ethical principles influence human behaviour and technological decision-making. You may investigate:

 

  • Digital ethics

  • Ethical frameworks

  • Laws and regulations

  • Professional codes

  • Artificial intelligence and ethics

  • Responsibilities of technology designers

  • Ethical decision-making

 

The course also emphasizes that values and ethics can be personal, shared, collective, or professional and can shape digital systems and spaces.

Content

 

The Content section focuses on the digital systems and technologies that underpin digital society. There are seven content topics:

The IB does not expect students to develop an exhaustive technical understanding of every digital system. Instead, content provides the technological knowledge necessary to support inquiry into digitial impacts and dilemmas.

 

Data

 

Data examines the different types, uses, representations, and implications of data. You will study:

 

  • Data, information, knowledge, and wisdom

  • Quantitative and qualitative data

  • Cultural, financial, geographical, medical, meteorological, transport, scientific, and statistical data

  • Metadata

  • Data collection

  • Databases

  • The data life cycle

  • Data visualization

  • Data security

  • Encryption and data masking

  • Blockchain

  • Big data

  • Data analytics

 

You will also learn about the four characteristics of big data – volume, variety, velocity, and veracity. Applications include predictive analysis, modeling, and understanding past, present, and future human behaviour. This topic also introduces dilemmas involving data bias, reliability, integrity, ownership, access, privacy, anonymity, surveillance, and personally identifiable information.

Algorithms

 

An algorithm is a defined sequence of steps or instructions designed to solve a problem or perform a task. You will study:

  • Loops

  • Flow charts

  • Code and programming languages

  • Sorting

  • Searching

  • Filtering

  • Prioritizing

  • Classification

  • Machine learning

  • Neural networks

 

You will also examine algorithmic dilemmas, including algorithmic bias, fairness, accountability, transparency, black-box algorithms, and the potential loss or erosion of human judgment.

Computers

 

The Computers topic examines the machines that automatically execute instructions to perform specific tasks. You will explore different types of computers, including:

You will also study hardware such as CPUs, memory, storage, sensors, input and output devices, and graphics and sound components. You will also investigate coding, programming languages, the evolution of computing, different generations of computers, Moore's law, and emerging technologies such as quantum computing.

Networks and the Internet

 

Networks and the Internet examines how computers, people, and communities are connected so that data and information can be accessed and shared. You will study:

 

  • Wired and wireless networks

  • PANs, LANs, MANs, and WANs

  • Client-server networks

  • Peer-to-peer networks

  • Servers

  • Routers

  • Modems

  • Switches

  • Network interfaces

  • Network protocols and standards

You will also distinguish the World Wide Web from the Internet and examine URLs, HTTP, browsers, and the World Wide Web Consortium. Internet dilemmas include privacy, surveillance, identity theft, cybercrime, hacking, viruses, ransomware, social engineering, denial-of-service attacks, and other forms of harmful online activity.

Artificial Intelligence

You will also study machine learning, including:

Artificial neural networks and the historical evolution of AI are also covered, including AI winters and debates surrounding technological futures. Finally, you will examine AI dilemmas involving fairness, bias, accountability, transparency, regulation, governance, automation, and human displacement.

Robots and Autonomous Technologies

 

Robots and Autonomous Technologies examines systems that can sense, think, and/or act with some degree of independence. You will study:

  • Autonomous vehicles

  • Drones

  • Virtual assistants

 

You will examine how these technologies use sensors, machine vision, machine learning, logical reasoning, and physical interaction to operate within different environments. The topic also explores the evolution of robotics and more conceptual issues such as machine consciousness, cognitive robotics, robot rights, anthropomorphism, and the uncanny valley. Dilemmas include complex interactions between humans and environments, underdeveloped laws and regulations, and the displacement of humans from different roles.

Contexts

 

The seven Contexts allow you to apply the concepts and content of the course to different areas of life:

  5. Human Knowledge

  6. Political

  7. Social

 

The contexts are not intended to be studied as isolated units. Instead, they provide real-world settings for investigating how digital systems affect people and communities. By the end of the course, you should be able to analyze and evaluate unseen real-world examples within each context.

 

Cultural

 

The Cultural context examines how digital systems influence the ways people express themselves, experience entertainment, preserve traditions, and interact with communities. You may investigate:

 

  • Arts, entertainment, and popular culture – including digital art, online galleries, streaming platforms, memes, forums, and influencers.

  • Home, leisure, and tourism – including smart home technologies, gaming, sports, hobbies, travel platforms, and tourism.

  • Heritage, customs, and celebrations – including the digital preservation and transformation of cultural practices.

  • Subcultures – including youth cultures, online communities, and forums.

     

Key takeaway – The Cultural context is about how technology transforms creative expression, entertainment, cultural identity, heritage, and community formation.

 

Economic

 

The Economic context explores how digital systems are changing businesses, employment, markets, and globalization. You may investigate:

 

  • Business – including business organization and operations.

  • Employment and labour – including remote work, digital nomadism, crowd work, microwork, gig economies, and automation.

  • Goods, services, and currencies – including e-commerce, targeted marketing, cryptocurrency, NFTs, cashless societies, and micro-transactions.

  • Globalization – including global sourcing, outsourcing, offshoring, reshoring, and insourcing.

 

Key takeaway – The Economic context asks how digital technologies are changing how businesses operate, how people work, how consumers purchase goods and services, and how economies interact globally.

 

Environmental

 

The Environmental context examines interactions between digital technologies and the natural and built environment. You may investigate:

 

  • Natural resources and ecosystems – including resource use, biodiversity, ecosystems, and natural disasters.

  • Pollution and waste – including recycling, waste management, green computing, e-waste, and planned obsolescence.

  • Cities, infrastructures, and built environments – including urban design, transportation, GPS, and GIS.

  • Agriculture – including digital systems used in agricultural production and distribution.

Health

 

The Health context explores how digital systems affect physical health, mental health, healthcare, and our understanding of the human body. You may investigate:

  • The human body – including human enhancement, bio-hacking, implants, exoskeletons, organ printing, and accessibility technologies.

Human Knowledge

 

The Human Knowledge context investigates how digital systems affect learning and the creation of new knowledge. You may investigate:

HL Extension

 

The HL Extension is designed for Higher Level students and takes the inquiry-based approach of the core course a step further. Students conduct extended inquiries into major challenges in digital society, investigate the relationship between digital systems and those challenges, identify interventions, evaluate them, and recommend future action. The three HL extension topics are:

 

  1. Global Well-being

  2. Governance and Human Rights

  3. Sustainable Development

 

These challenges should not be treated as completely separate units. They are deliberately designed to connect with multiple concepts, content topics, and contexts. You are expected to develop a challenge mindset, meaning that you should consider not only what a problem is, but also who is affected, how digital systems contribute to it, and what could realistically be done about it.

 

Global Well-being

 

Global Well-being examines significant challenges affecting people and communities and explores the ways digital systems can help understand or address those challenges. You will investigate:

 

  • Local and global inequalities – including economic inequality, stratification, food insecurity, and access to healthcare and medicine.

  • Changing populations – including population growth, demographic changes, aging and youth populations, and migration.

  • The future of work – including automation, employment, meaningful and secure employment, and the collective needs of workers.

 

Possible interventions could include a digital track-and-trace system used during a pandemic, big-data approaches to understanding refugee crises, or digital worker organizations designed to advocate for improved working conditions.

 

Key takeaway – Global Well-being requires you to investigate how digital systems can influence inequality, healthcare, migration, population change, and employment, while considering the needs of the specific communities affected.

 

Governance and Human Rights

 

Governance and Human Rights focuses on the relationship between digital systems, political participation, security, representation, diversity, and discrimination. You will investigate:

 

  • Conflict, peace, and security – including wars, civil conflicts, and regional, national, and global security.

  • Participation and representation – including political speech, activism, and representation within governing bodies and institutions.

  • Diversity and discrimination – including gender equality, racial and ethnic discrimination, accessibility, inclusion, and tolerance of religious and cultural differences.

 

Possible interventions include online networks connecting peace activists, digital campaigns promoting awareness of local government meetings, or automated systems designed to identify and moderate hate speech.

 

Key takeaway – This challenge topic asks you to evaluate how digital technologies can influence governance, political participation, security, representation, equality, and human rights.

 

Sustainable Development

 

Sustainable Development explores how digital systems interact with environmental challenges and efforts to create more sustainable societies. You will investigate:

 

  • Climate change and action – including global, national, regional, and local efforts to address climate change.

  • Responsible use of resources – including responsible consumption, production, distribution, energy, transportation, and shared infrastructure.

  • Managing pollution and waste – including pollution and waste monitoring, prevention, and reduction.

 

Possible interventions include using livestreaming to raise awareness of climate change, using 3D printing with recycled materials, or creating augmented reality tools that visualize the waste associated with everyday purchases.

 

Key takeaway – Sustainable Development asks you to consider how digital systems can contribute to climate action, responsible resource use, and pollution and waste management, while also considering the costs and limitations of technological solutions.
