Research Experience Dos

  • Highlight your role: At the high school level, it is often difficult to secure research positions so if you have successfully done so, make sure to clearly highlight your role and how you obtained it. How did you network to find a supervisor? How did you decide on a topic?

  • Emphasize skills learned: Talk about the skills you learned and developed during the research experience, such as data analysis, critical thinking, teamwork, etc. You can also discuss subject-specific skills that you gained as part of the research process - for example in chemistry, were there any specific instruments that you had to learn how to use as part of your research?

  • Connect to the future: Describe how this research experience will help you in the future. How will the skills you gained through this experience contribute to your academic success at college? For example, if you learned to use new chemistry instruments as part of your research, you can explain how this will help you at college where you may have to use similar instruments or techniques.

  • Show personal growth: Explain how this research experience has helped you grow as a person. For example, did it improve your critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork skills, etc? You can also explain if this research experience solidified your academic interests or if it made you realize you wanted to take a different path.

  • Be specific: Clearly describe your research goals and outcomes with reliable evidence. Don't just make statements like "I learned so much" or "This helped me gain skills" but rather be descriptive and explain your research experience in depth to help the reader gain a better understanding.

Research Experience Don'ts

  • Don't be too technical: Although it is beneficial to provide as clear a description as possible, you should consider that admissions officers are a general audience who may not have in-depth knowledge of technical terms. Avoid using highly technical terms or jargon that could confuse the reader and make your description less appealing.

  • Don't forget collaboration: Although it is good to highlight your own research, many research experiences are often conducted as part of a larger team. You should discuss any collaboration you had on your research experience. What did you learn from others and what did they learn from you? This is a chance to showcase your teamwork skills which will be important in college.

  • Don't leave out challenges: Research involves doing experiments or looking up literature in order to answer your research question or hypothesis. Many times, experiments go wrong or the available literature is unable to effectively answer what you are looking for. You should discuss these challenges faced during the research process and explain how you overcame them. This shows admissions officers your resilience and determination to succeed.
