Are you currently an IB student who needs to get started on writing their IAs? You may be wondering if it is possible to write an IA in one day, as IB is a rigorous program and the work can pile up fast if you are not organized. But is it possible to write an IA in one day? This post is here to provide some clarity regarding this!

Is it Possible to Write an IA in One Day?

Writing an IA in one day is a challenging task and can often lead to the work being rushed and containing errors that could otherwise have been prevented. Hence, it is not advisable to write an IA in one day. That being said, to answer the above question, yes it is possible to write an IA in one day but it is unlikely to be of as high a quality compared to if you start earlier and write the IA over several days. This is because it takes a significant amount of time to conduct background research to find sources, conduct experiments, do any calculations or mathematical transformations, etc. Writing an IA last minute also does not give you enough time to proofread and edit your work, which could be detrimental.

Before you begin writing your IA, make sure you have all the information needed to answer all parts of the IA effectively. For example, for science IAs make sure you have conducted all your experiments and have obtained sufficient data. Ensure you have done a bit of background research and compiled all your references before you officially begin writing. This is because it is easier to have all your references in a list so you can quickly refer to them when writing the introduction/background of your IA rather than wasting time searching for reliable sources. If you have done the above steps and are still pressed for time, see the tips below:

  • Create a schedule: When you have limited time, it is important to use each minute effectively. Create a schedule that has a detailed outline of the time you will allocate to each section of the IA (eg: 1 hour for the background, 3 hours for the data analysis and discussion, etc). Make sure you budget time for breaks and meals as overworking yourself can result in errors being made.

  • Follow IB guides: Make sure you follow all the requirements for your IA as outlined in the IB guides for the respective subject that you are writing the IA for. Many times schools or teachers will also provide students with a checklist or information on what should be included in an IA so make sure you follow these instructions if your teacher has given them to you.

  • Focus on the main parts: Focus on the time-consuming parts first (eg: data analysis, discussion, evaluation) rather than the easier parts (eg: introduction, variables, hypothesis, proofreading, etc). You can do these easier aspects once the more difficult ones are out of the way.

  • Use a spellchecker: If you don't have time to manually proofread, use a spellchecker to help you edit your work as you write it as this can help save you time.

We hope this guide has given you some useful tips on how to write an IA quickly if you are pressed for time. However, make sure you start early to avoid any issues in the IA-writing process.
