Is IB Respected In The USA?
The IB program is globally recognized and is renowned for its academic rigour. Hence, it is well-respected in the USA, including at rigorous universities such as Harvard and Stanford. That being said, US universities often also accept candidates from a wide range of other programs such as Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors students. Although students are free to choose any curriculum they wish, IB students are looked at more favourably during college admissions than other candidates. This is because US colleges prefer to have well-rounded candidates, compared to UK universities that focus more on academics.
The IB program is well-rounded and requires students to complete components outside of their main subjects, thus aligning with the holistic requirements of many US colleges. Examples include the completion of the DP core, where students have to complete a 4000-word Extended Essay (EE), TOK essay and exhibition, and engage in Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) extracurriculars. This develops skills outside the classroom and makes students more prepared for US college life since extracurriculars are just as important as academics.
Additionally, IB courses are graded both externally using exams and internally using projects, lab reports, oral presentations, etc. depending on the subject. This ensures that students develop their critical-thinking skills and are not simply just memorizing content to score well on exams. IB may even give students an edge over AP or Honors applicants due to the rigorous nature of the IB program which can show admissions officers that you are ready for the level of work required at college.
