The IB Visual Arts Artist Project is your opportunity to emerge as an artist by creating and situating an artwork of your choice. If you are currently working on your artist project and are wondering about word counts and requirements, this post is for you! In this guide, we will outline the specific components of the project and the word count ranges you must follow.
The artist project is a stand-alone task for Higher Level (HL) students that focuses on creating and situating an artwork in a specific context. Unlike other components, this project allows you to follow your individual interests without needing to maintain visual coherence with your other course submissions. To complete this task, you must submit a PDF portfolio of up to 12 screens and a three-minute video documenting your artwork in its chosen context.
While there is a maximum limit of 2,500 words for the entire PDF, the artist project has strict word count limits for each of its discrete sections. You must state the exact word count for every section in your submission, as follows:
Project Proposal: Maximum 500 words across up to three screens, detailing your initial technical and conceptual intentions and your research into the chosen context.
Connections: Maximum 1,000 words across up to four screens, investigating the cultural significance of at least two artworks by different artists that inform your project.
Dialogues: Maximum 500 words across up to two screens, documenting how you responded to critical feedback and refined your work for your audience.
Finalized Artistic Intentions: A short text of maximum 100 words submitted alongside your video to present your final intentions.
Project Evaluation: Maximum 300 words across up to two screens, evaluating how successfully your artwork communicated with its audience in context.
Future Development: Maximum 200 words on one screen, proposing new directions for your practice based on your project evaluation.
Beyond the word count, the quality of your visual evidence is paramount. We recommend a horizontal on-screen format with approximately 250 words per screen to ensure your work remains clear and legible for the examiner. A good example of a strong Artist project can be found here.
