This post will provide a brief overview of the IB film portfolio requirements.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">IB Film Portfolio Requirements</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;The IB film portfolio is part of the Internal Assessment (IA) for the IB Film course, comprising 40% of the course grade for SL students and 25% for HL students. For the film portfolio, students are required to submit portfolio pages and a film reel.&nbsp;&nbsp;<ul><li>Portfolio pages –&nbsp;These are descriptions of the written and visual components that demonstrate a student's knowledge and skills related to their chosen <a href="/blog/ib-film-portfolio-roles" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">film production roles</a>. The portfolio pages must include a description of the student's contributions as part of this role, visual evidence from the film reel with timestamps, and a reflection on difficulties faced during the filmmaking process. The portfolio pages should have a balance of text and visuals. and should be presented in a maximum of 9 pages (3 pages per production role), along with a list of sources at the end. Each production role should include a discussion of 3 clips from each film. In this post, we will break down the Collaborative Film Project and share practical tips to help you excel.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">IB Film Collaborative Film Project</h2>&nbsp;<ul><li>At HL, the Collaborative Film Project component accounts for 35% of the final grade. &nbsp;</li><li>This component is unique to HL students and is not required for those taking the course at SL. &nbsp;</li><li>Students work collaboratively in a core production team to create an original short film, lasting a maximum of 7 minutes.</li><li>Alongside the film, each student submits a project report of no more than 2000 words, in which they explain their contributions and analyze the collaborative process. &nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3>The Film&nbsp;</h3>&nbsp;This project is all about teamwork. HL students are grouped into production teams (usually 2–4 people) and must work together to produce an original short film. The idea is to simulate the professional experience of working on a real film set – with each team member taking on a defined production role such as director, screenwriter, editor, or sound designer. The film itself must be completely original. That means students are not permitted to remake or adapt existing existing films and scripts or to borrow copyrighted music or footage. Students must brainstorm, plan, shoot, and edit the entire film from the ground up. The IB is looking for a high level of collaboration and professionalism in both the process and final product. Choose a story that excites your team and can realistically be produced within your timeframe and resources. The idea doesn’t have to be overly complex – even a simple story can be powerful if told well. Avoid overly ambitious ideas that require special effects, large casts, or exotic locations – unless you have access to them.</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li>Be intentional with your role. Whether you’re the editor, sound designer, or director, own your role. Think about how your creative choices will shape the overall film, making sure it significantly impacts the final result. However, at the same time, make sure you're communicating with the rest of the team regularly to ensure everything stays aligned with the shared vision.&nbsp;</li></ul>&nbsp;<ul><li>Planning is key. Plan everything out – storyboard, create shot lists, write detailed scripts, and organize your shooting schedule. A well-organized team will find the production process much smoother and more rewarding.&nbsp;</li><li>Communication is everything. The collaborative nature of this project means conflicts or disagreements may arise. That’s okay – in fact, it’s expected. What matters is how you respond. If you are in the process of completing your IB Film Portfolio and are wondering if there is a word count, this post is for you! In this guide, we will outline whether the IB Film Portfolio has a word count, as well as provide a suggested word count range for you to follow.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">IB Film Portfolio Word Count</h2>&nbsp;&nbsp;There is no strict word count for the IB film portfolio. However, students must ensure their film portfolios are detailed yet concise and cover various aspects of the filmmaking process related to the IB film portfolio roles they have chosen (e.g. director, cinematographer, etc.). For a detailed insight into the various IB film portfolio roles available to choose from, see <a href="/blog/ib-film-portfolio-roles" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">this guide</a>.&nbsp;For the film portfolio, students are required to submit portfolio pages and portfolio reels. The portfolio pages are descriptions of the written and visual components that demonstrate a student's knowledge and skills related to their chosen film production roles. The portfolio pages must include a description of the student's contributions as part of this role, visual evidence from the film reel with timestamps, and a reflection on difficulties faced during the filmmaking process. The portfolio should have a balance of text and visuals. and should be presented in a maximum of 9 pages (3 pages per production role), along with a list of sources at the end. Each production role should include a discussion of 3 clips from each film. Apart from the portfolio pages, the portfolio reels are also submitted as part of your IB film portfolio.
