The IB film portfolio is a key assessment component of the IB Film course that allows students to showcase their practical filmmaking skills alongside critical reflection. It emphasizes creative decision-making and understanding of film language through collaborative and independent film productions. This post will provide a brief overview of the IB film portfolio requirements.
The IB film portfolio is part of the Internal Assessment (IA) for the IB Film course, comprising 40% of the course grade for SL students and 25% for HL students. For the film portfolio, students are required to submit portfolio pages and a film reel.
Portfolio pages – These are descriptions of the written and visual components that demonstrate a student's knowledge and skills related to their chosen film production roles. The portfolio pages must include a description of the student's contributions as part of this role, visual evidence from the film reel with timestamps, and a reflection on difficulties faced during the filmmaking process. The portfolio pages should have a balance of text and visuals. and should be presented in a maximum of 9 pages (3 pages per production role), along with a list of sources at the end. Each production role should include a discussion of 3 clips from each film. See this exemplar for a more detailed insight.
Film reel – Students must choose some clips of evidence from their film production work and create a film reel that is submitted to the IB as a single video file. The film reel should contain three chapters - one chapter per film production role. Each chapter should be a maximum of 3 minutes (excluding the black slate), and the entire film reel should not exceed 9 minutes. For film production roles 1 and 2, there should be a black slate (10 seconds) and 1-6 clips of evidence from exercises, experiments, completed films, or excerpts from the role. For film production role 3, there should be a black slate (10 seconds) and 1 completed film without credits.
