IB Group 2: Language acquisition

What is IB Subject Group 2?

Group 2 is a language-focused subject group in the IB program, dedicated to the study of an additional, second language. The subjects in this group are designed to develop language skills and cultural understanding, whether students are beginners or already have some experience with the language.

There are three types of courses within Group 2: Language Ab Initio, Language B, and Latin or Classical Greek. In this post, we’ll break down each option to help you choose the one that best suits your level and goals.

Language ab initio

This course is designed for students with little to no prior experience in the language. It focuses on building foundational skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while introducing students to the culture of the language they are studying. The course focuses on practical communication – teaching students how to express themselves effectively at a basic level.

Students explore a variety of topics, including personal relationships, leisure activities, and global issues, which help them build foundational language skills. Alongside language development, they gain insights into the culture of countries where the language is spoken.

This course is ideal for students eager to learn a new language from scratch.

Language B

IB Language B is designed for students with some prior experience in the language. The course focuses on further developing skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while deepening cultural understanding. Students are encouraged to communicate effectively in various contexts, with an emphasis on more complex language use and greater fluency compared to ab initio.

The course covers a wide range of topics, such as identities, social relationships, and global challenges, helping students expand their vocabulary and comprehension. Alongside language development, students explore the cultural and societal contexts of the language, gaining a broader appreciation of the perspectives and traditions of its speakers.

This course is ideal for students who have a basic foundation in the language and are keen to advance their skills while exploring the culture of its speakers in greater depth.

Latin or Classical Greek

IB Latin or Classical Greek is a unique course designed for students who are interested in learning Latin or Classical Greek. For those interested in taking this course it is important to mention that the course requires some foundational knowledge of the language and culture

The course focuses on developing competence in reading and understanding unadapted classical texts in their original form. The course explores key areas of the classical world, including linguistic, historical, archaeological, and art historical evidence. By studying these different aspects, students deepen their knowledge of the political, cultural, and artistic concerns reflected in ancient literature and the influence of the classical world on modern society. By the end of the course, students are expected to be able to read, analyze, and discuss classical literature in its original language.

This course is ideal for students who are passionate about classical languages and literature and want to deepen their understanding of the ancient world.
