IB English A Paper 2
Paper 2 is a comparative essay that assesses students’ ability to analyze and evaluate at least two works previously studied throughout the IB program.
Paper 2 tests students' ability to demonstrate their understanding of literary conventions, authorial choices, and thematic or structural connections between texts.

How to Succeed in English A Paper 2
Solve past papers – This helps you get used to the type of questions that could be asked on the exam and helps you develop skills in learning which literary devices to look for. You should try to solve past papers using a timer to simulate exam conditions and check your answers against a markscheme to identify areas for improvement.
Study your texts well – The key to success in English A Paper 2 is thoroughly knowing and understanding your prescribed course texts in depth. Ensure you understand your chosen works’ central themes, characters, symbols, and contexts. Try memorizing some important quotes or storylines from the texts that you can use in your analysis. Read each course text at least 5 times to ensure you have somewhat memorized the main plot, themes, and character development.
Make a list of similarities and differences – Read through both your course texts and find similarities and differences between each work in terms of literary devices used, plot structure, character development, etc. Based on questions from past papers, make a list of common topics that could be asked on the exam (e.g. relationships, power dynamics, society, etc). From there, try to find similarities and differences between the texts so that you are prepared for all types of exam questions.
Plan before writing – Organize your thoughts before beginning your essay to ensure your response stays focused and well-structured. Before you start writing, create a quick draft in bullet points of what you want to base your answer on. This helps you gather and organize your thoughts.
