How to Address Cultural Identity in Your Common App Essay
It is important to note that not all prompts require you to discuss your cultural identity. Hence when writing your Common App essay, you should carefully read and understand what the prompt is asking you to talk about and only include a discussion of your cultural identity if applicable.
For example, Prompt 1 from 2024-25 is "Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story."
This prompt explicitly asks students to talk about their identity, which could include cultural identity (among other identities such as religious identity, gender identity, etc). Talking about cultural identity would be a viable way for a student to answer this prompt.
Students can also talk about cultural identity in other prompts even though it may not be asked so directly. For example, Prompt 2 from 2024-25 is "The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?"
When answering this prompt, a student could discuss their cultural identity in terms of challenges faced. How did the student's cultural identity present challenges for the student? Were there any social struggles or setbacks due to having this cultural identity? Since the prompt asks the student to describe any challenge, setback, or failure, this could range anywhere from sports to academics, cultural identity and so on. In prompts like this, it is up to the student's interpretation of what challenges they would like to discuss.
However, it would not make sense to discuss cultural identity for some prompts. For example, Prompt 5 from 2024-25 is "Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others."
In this case, the prompt is not asking for anything about the student's identity but is rather asking the student to discuss their accomplishments or something that made them undergo personal growth. Discussing cultural identity would not be well-suited for this prompt as it would distract from the main focus.
Now that you know how to analyze prompts to see if writing bout cultural identity is applicable, let's go over some things to keep in mind if you do choose to write about your cultural identity:
Reflect carefully: Think about what your cultural background means to you and how it has influenced your values, beliefs, and perspectives.
Focus on one aspect: Cultural identity can mean different things to different people. For example, cultural identity could include race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, immigration, languages, customs, etc. A focused narrative is more compelling than trying to cover everything so choose only 1-2 aspects to from the above list to include in your essay.
Be descriptive: Share anecdotes and events that highlight how your culture has shaped your character. Avoid using generic statements and instead, provide vivid descriptions to help the reader visualize your story.
Talk about challenges: If applicable, discuss any challenges you faced due to your cultural identity. Discuss the steps you took to overcome these challenges and explain how you grew as a person due to these challenges. For example, did they help strengthen your cultural identity?
Avoid stereotypes: Be careful not to portray your culture in a stereotypical manner. Your essay should discuss your personal experiences instead of describing generalizations about your culture.
