Are you a high school senior getting started with your college applications? As application season approaches, you might be narrowing down options for colleges or universities you would like to apply to. If you are wondering how many colleges you should apply to, this post is for you! This guide will outline how many schools you should ideally apply to, as well as provide you with some tips on how to select colleges.
The simple answer is that you should apply to as many colleges as you want. That being said, you should be aware that the more colleges you apply to, the more time you will need to spend on crafting applications, answering essay questions, filling out financial aid forms, etc. Although there is no official limit to the number of colleges you can apply to, we generally recommend applying to at least 3 match, 3 reach, and 3 safety colleges so that you have a balanced portfolio.
To save time during college applications and prevent writing duplicate applications multiple times, you could also use college application tools such as the Common App, Coalition App, or the UC App which allow you to apply to multiple colleges using a single application, thus saving time.
Carefully research: Conduct thorough research to shortlist colleges that align with your interests. For example, do they offer the exact courses/majors you want to take? What is the proximity to home? Will you need to budget for living expenses if you are moving out? What are the scholarship opportunities available to you?
Create a balanced list: This should include a mix of reach, match, and safety schools. This means having a mix of schools with high acceptance rates as well as schools with lower acceptance rates. This leaves room for a backup in case you do not get accepted by the more selective schools.
Attend college tours: These should preferably be done in person, however, if that is not possible you can also do virtual college tours. Seeing the campus can give you a feel of what the campus environment is like, which could help you make your decision.
Don't go overboard: Although there is no upper limit to the number of colleges you can apply to, each application takes a significant amount of time and resources. Even when using a standardized application platform where you technically only need to submit 1 application, many colleges ask for further supplementary essays and information that can lengthen the application process. Our recommendation is to apply to a maximum of 12-15 colleges so that you can effectively complete each application.
We hope this guide has helped you identify how many colleges to apply to. Good luck with your applications!
