As you approach the process of writing your Extended Essay, you may have heard about the EE Supervisor. This post will clarify the role of the EE Supervisor, aiming to ensure you fully understand how to leverage their support for a successful Extended Essay experience.
EE Supervisor Explained
The EE Supervisor provides crucial support and guidance during the entire EE journey. EE Supervisors are your school's subject teachers in the field you’ve chosen for your Extended Essay. They will provide you with detailed advice and suggestions for improvement to help ensure your essay meets high academic standards. Your assigned EE Supervisor will:
- help you come up with and refine a research question that satisfies the IB Criteria
- answer any of your questions
- offer insights and advice on academic sources, methodologies, and theoretical frameworks relevant to the student’s topic
- monitor your progress and ensure you meet all EE deadlines
- provide one-time detailed feedback on your EE First Draft
- ensure that students adhere to academic integrity standards, including proper citation practices and originality
- provide a predicted grade for your Extended Essay
The EE Supervisor will also facilitate 3 mandatory interviews based on which students produce 3 reflections in which they reflect on the entire EE writing process.
The limits of your EE Supervisor's help
- Your EE Supervisor cannot come up with a research question for you
- Your EE Supervisor cannot write any sections of your essay for you
- Your EE Supervisor can only review your work once, providing feedback solely on your First Full Draft
- Your EE Supervisor can only provide suggestions but cannot implement them
- Your EE Supervisor can provide general advice on citation methods but they cannot check and correct all of your references
How are EE Supervisors assigned?
Your school will assign an EE Supervisor who specialises in the subject you have chosen to write your Extended Essay in. Note that you cannot choose your EE Supervisor yourself.
When are EE Supervisors assigned?
Students are assigned an EE Supervisor once they have declared the subject area for their Extended Essay. This usually takes place around the middle of the Diploma Programme Year 1 (DP1). At this stage, students are matched with a supervisor who is knowledgeable in their chosen field and will be able to provide tailored guidance and support for their research and writing process.
