Do IB students need to take the SAT? cover image

Are you planning on applying to colleges in the US after your IB Program ends? You may be wondering if completing the IB Program exempts you from having to take the SAT. This post will provide some more guidance regarding this common misconception, so keep reading for more details!

Do IB students need to take the SAT?

Students should remember that IB and SAT are two completely different things when it comes to college admissions. The IB Program is a high school program aimed at students aged 16-19 and covers subjects chosen from 6 different subject areas. It can be considered similar to taking AP or Honors courses in the American curriculum or A-levels in the British curriculum. For a more in-depth guide to the IB program, check out this post.

SATs, on the other hand, are NOT a high school program but rather a form of standardized testing that students take in addition to whatever high school curriculum they are enrolled in. Students may also have to take subject-specific SATs if their respective college or program requires them.

Therefore, completing the IB program does NOT exempt students from having to take the SAT if it is required by the college or university they are applying to. That being said, there are always colleges or programs that do not require the SAT, so it is not mandatory for IB students to take the SAT. Students should make sure to carefully check each institute's website to confirm the admission requirements and see if the SAT is required for admission.

We hope this guide has helped you understand whether IB students need to take the SAT. Good luck with your college applications!
