  • Describe the challenge: Provide context for the challenge, setback, or failure. Explain the situation you were in and why was it difficult for you. This will help the reader to see the reasoning behind this issue and its significance in your life.

  • Acknowledge your feelings: Describe how this challenge, setback, or failure made you feel. Were you frustrated, disappointed, fearful, embarrassed, etc? Talking about your true emotions will help your narrative feel more authentic to the reader.

  • Describe your turning point: Explain when you overcame your initial negative feelings and realized that you had to take steps to solve the problem. What sparked this realization that you needed to change something? For example, a conversation with a friend or family member could have helped you see a new perspective, etc.

  • Perseverance: If it took you some time to see the meaningful impact of your solutions to the issue, discuss how you persevered even though you may not have seen the effects of your actions immediately. This shows your commitment and dedication to admissions officers.

  • Support system: Explain if there were people such as family, friends, teachers, etc. to support you as you navigated the challenge, setback, or failure. How did their support benefit you? This shows admissions officers that you are open to seeking help from others.
