Bennington College Essay Prompts

Answer only 1 out of the following prompts

At Bennington, students don’t just study; they’re makers and doers who create original work on their own and in collaboration with others. Tell us about something you’ve created that you’re proud of. Why is it important to you? Alternatively, tell us something you look forward to creating when you get to college. Optional: We’d love to see your work if you’d like to share it with us. You’ll receive instructions for submitting your work after we process your application. (250 words)

  • Clearly describe the project, work, or creation you are proud of, providing enough detail for the reader to understand what it is and its significance.

  • Explain what inspired you to create this work and what motivated you to see it through to completion.

  • Discuss the process you went through to create it, including any challenges you faced and how you overcame them.

  • Highlight the skills you developed or enhanced through this project and what you learned from the experience.

  • Explain why this creation is important to you, touching on its personal, academic, or social significance.

  • If applicable, mention any collaboration with others during the creation process and how their input shaped the final product.

  • If choosing to discuss a future creation, describe what you look forward to creating in college, including the inspiration behind it and its potential impact.

  • Connect your creation or future project to Bennington's emphasis on being a maker and doer, showcasing how you embody or plan to embody these values.

What piece of media do you think we should all know about and what makes it interesting to you? (250 words)

  • Identify the piece of media (e.g., book, TV show, movie, etc.) and its title, giving a brief overview of its content or storyline.

  • Explain why this piece of media is interesting or meaningful to you personally, sharing any specific experiences or emotions it evokes.

  • Highlight what makes this media unique or stand out, such as innovative storytelling, exceptional performances, or unique artistic style.
