With its broad range of contemporary issues and interdisciplinary approach, the IB Digital Society syllabus can seem challenging when you first encounter it. Rather than following a traditional textbook-style structure, the course asks you to investigate how digital systems, people, communities, and society interact. In this post, we'll break down each part of the syllabus and explain what you can expect to study throughout the course.

Digital Society

Introduction

You will explore different terms used to describe technologically transformed societies, including:

You will also examine the idea that there may be multiple digital societies rather than one universal digital society. An important part of this discussion is the digital divide , which highlights the uneven access that different people and communities have to digital systems. You will investigate major milestones in the development of digital technologies, including:

These developments provide historical context for understanding how contemporary digital systems emerged and how technological change has influenced society.

The course also introduces the fundamental difference between analogue and digital information . Analogue systems represent continuous physical qualities and signals , while digital systems represent information through discrete signals with a finite set of values . Digitization involves converting analogue data and information into digital form , as well as using digital systems to change the structure or operation of an organization. Examples can include digital preservation, digital archives, and the disruption of traditional education, businesses, and organizations through digitalization.

Key takeaway – The Introduction establishes the idea that digital society is not simply about computers or smartphones. It is about the large-scale transformation of information, organizations, communities, and everyday life through digital systems.

“Digital society” is a contested term used to describe contemporary life. There may be multiple digital societies rather than just one.

Digital society involves the transformation of analogue processes and objects into digital forms.

Digital society is characterized by uneven access to digital systems

Milestones in the development of digital society

Digital systems use binary digits to represent data and information

The digital is different from the analogue

Digitization changes data and information from analogue to digital

Digitalization is the use of digital systems to change the structure and/or operation and of an organization concept must be addressed. Students are encouraged to
