Robots and autonomous technologies

IB Digital Society Syllabus

SL & HL

Robots and Autonomous Technologies examines systems that can sense, think, and/or act with some degree of independence . You will study:

You will examine how these technologies use sensors, machine vision, machine learning, logical reasoning, and physical interaction to operate within different environments. The topic also explores the evolution of robotics and more conceptual issues such as machine consciousness, cognitive robotics, robot rights, anthropomorphism, and the uncanny valley . Dilemmas include complex interactions between humans and environments, underdeveloped laws and regulations, and the displacement of humans from different roles .

Key takeaway – This topic asks you to consider what happens when digital systems gain increasing physical and decision-making autonomy, and how that changes the relationship between humans, machines, and their environments.
