Geography IA word count and page limit

Struggling with your Geography IA, uncertain about the word allocation in your report? Look no further than Clastify - the world’s most extensive library of exemplar essays. Dive into our guide to dispel doubts about the structure of your Geography report and improve your grade.

The Geography IA is based on fieldwork investigation on a topic that relates to the IB syllabus. Your work cannot exceed 2500 words, however, there is no page limit. The IB prepared a suggested word breakdown to guide students with appropriate word allocation within this limit. Read further to learn more about the proposed structure.

Fieldwork question and geographic context

At the beginning of your report, you should devote around 300 words to introduce the fieldwork question and describe the geographic context of your study. You should state hypotheses in relation to this question and test them through the report. When it comes to the geographic context, you should describe your study’s location and its basic features, its relevance, and its relation to the syllabus. The IA should be backed with geographical theory and include all background information and concepts necessary to understand the exploration.

Check out a well-executed introduction here.

Methods of investigation

The next 300 words should be allocated for methods of investigation. In this part, you should present and explain your approach to the fieldwork. Describe how the collected data is relevant to the theory and what instruments, technologies, sampling, or surveying techniques are used to ensure the quality of your research.

And this example is a perfect explanation of it.

Quality and treatment of information collected

After having established the methods of data collection you should move to the data itself, this part should take up to 500 words. You must ensure that the quantity and quality of your findings are appropriate to answer the research question and address the hypothesis. The data should be displayed in graphical forms such as graphs, tables, diagrams, or other illustrations.

This exemplar has a great pattern which you can use as an inspiration.

Written analysis

The written analysis is worth the highest portion of your grade thus it is the longest section of the report - around 850 words. The analysis should consist of interpretation and explanation of the collected information in relation to the focus of the study using descriptive and statistical methods. This section includes identifying trends, spatial patterns, and anomalies.

See this one to get a glimpse of this matter.

Conclusion

The conclusion of about 200 words is the part for summarizing the findings and clearly stating the answer to the fieldwork question. It is acceptable for the findings to be different than the preliminary assumptions, however, they must be supported by the research.

And you can check perfectly structured conclusion in this IA

Evaluation

The main purpose of the evaluation is to review the methodology of data collection, including additional factors such as the weather, technical difficulties, or bias. You should suggest how the study might have been improved and could be extended in the future. This part should take around 300 words.

Last but not least, this exemplar shows how it should be done.

Be careful! Make sure to deduct the following because they are not included in the word count.:

  1. Acknowledgments
  2. Contents page
  3. Diagrams
  4.  Labels — of five words or fewer
  5. Headings on diagrams — of 10 words or fewer
  6. Tables of statistical data
  7. Equations, formulae and calculations
  8. Citations (which, if used, must be in the body of the commentary)
  9. References (which, if used, must be in the footnotes/endnotes)
