Formatting your Internal Assessment and unsure about the correct spacing? You’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’ll break down exactly what spacing you should use for your IA to keep it clean, professional, and ready for submission.

Internal Assessment Spacing

The IB does not mandate a specific spacing for Internal Assessments. However, it is generally recommended to use 1.5 or double spacing. While using single or 1.15 spacing isn’t prohibited, it can make your IA harder to read and less visually appealing for the examiner. Although spacing alone won’t directly affect your marks, presentation matters – well-formatted work leaves a stronger impression and can give you that extra edge when aiming for top marks. We therefore recommend using a spacing of 1.5 or 2.0 and a font size of 12

The IB no longer sets strict page limits for Internal Assessments. These limits were mostly used in the Sciences, where students had to keep their reports under 12 pages, often squeezing in text with smaller spacing. But with the 2025 syllabus update, that’s no longer the case. Now, students are encouraged to use wider spacing to make their IA easier to read.

The IB does however enforce word limits so make sure to keep an eye on that! You can find word count information for each subject on our blog.
