The IB Language B course aims to develop students' proficiency in a foreign language. However, in addition to focusing on key grammar and vocabulary development, students are encouraged to link their learning to five global themes, where students learn how language connects people, cultures, and ideas, while developing their communication skills and intercultural awareness. This post will outline the main text themes encountered in IB Language B courses.
All IB Language B courses follow the same syllabus and have the same five global themes. Hence, this guide applies to all IB Language B courses (e.g. English B, French B, Spanish B, German B, etc.). The five main global themes are Identities, Experiences, Human Ingenuity, Social Organization, and Sharing the Planet. The IB broadly defines the themes and provides a general framework, allowing for flexible interpretation of what is covered and how it is approached, ultimately depending on your school or teacher's choice.
This theme focuses on what defines individuals and groups. Students explore questions such as "Who am I? How do language and culture shape my identity?" Topics covered in this theme include lifestyle, health, personal relationships, beliefs, and cultural expressions. Through texts like diary entries and personal journals, students examine how identity can be expressed and interpreted differently across cultures. This theme often encourages personal reflection and helps learners develop empathy for others’ perspectives. This theme covers topics such as:
Lifestyles and personal attributes
Health and well-being

In this theme, students will explore how human creativity and innovation affect the world. Students will focus on how developments in science and technology improve our lives, and how arts and culture can help us understand society through a more creative lens. Students will also consider what we can learn about a culture through its artistic expression and how the media influences the way we connect with each other. Through texts such as news articles, documentaries, and opinion pieces, students evaluate how human creativity solves real-world problems. This theme covers topics such as:
Entertainment
Art, design, and culture
Communication and media
Science and technology
Innovation and social change
In this theme, students explore how societies function and how individuals interact within them. Students examine an individual’s role within the community, the importance of rules and regulations in society, and how systems and institutions influence people’s opportunities and challenges. This theme covers topics such as:
Social relationships and equality
Community engagement
Education and work
Law and order
