The Group 4 Project is an exploration that brings together students from science subjects, including Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ESS, and Design Technology, to explore a common scientific topic. The goal of the Group 4 Project is to help students develop critical thinking and allow them to build interdisciplinary scientific knowledge. All Group 4 projects must be accompanied by a reflection outlining what each student has learned from the project. This post will explain the requirements for the Group 4 Project, so that you can tackle the task effectively.

IB Group 4 Project Reflections Explained

The Group 4 project reflection consists of a brief, 50-word paragraph that must be written outlining your learning journey throughout the Group 4 Project. The Group 4 reflection is a required component of the IB Diploma Program and helps the examiner understand the thought and effort you put into your Group 4 project.

Purpose of the Reflection

  • Thought-provoking – The group 4 reflection encourages students to think deeply about their learning experience throughout the project. Students are encouraged to think about what went well and what could have been improved, rather than just writing descriptions of what they did in the project.

  • Holistic development – The reflection allows students to focus on both the scientific nature of the process (e.g. combining skills in chemistry/physics/biology/ESS, etc.) as well as personal growth from the project (e.g. teamwork, collaboration, time management).

  • Connection between theory and real life – The reflection helps students demonstrate how they connected classroom concepts to real-world scientific applications to solve a pertinent issue related to their project.

Key Reflection Areas

It is important to note that there will not be enough space to describe your experiences in all of the areas below, as 50 words is very limited. Ideally, you should pick 1 subtopic from each area below and then briefly explain each one in your reflection.

  • Cross-disciplinary learning – Explain how your project used knowledge from various subjects. For example, you could mention how your project tackled biodiversity issues by combining knowledge from biology and ESS. In your reflection, you can also be more specific and note the exact subtopics within each subject that helped you in your project.

  • Collaboration – Describe how your team members worked together towards a common goal, divided tasks, and navigated any issues along the way. Explain how each team member contributed knowledge from their scientific background. How did it complement your own knowledge? What did you learn from others?

  • Evaluation: Discuss what went well in your project, what challenges arose, and what improvements could be made in future. Make sure you explain each statement holistically rather than just stating the pros and cons of the project with no further explanation.
