IB Group 1: Studies in Language and Literature

What is IB Subject Group 1?

Group 1 is a language-focused subject group in the IB program, dedicated to first languages (referred to as "Language A"). These courses assume proficiency in the language and are designed to explore how it is used rather than to teach the basics. Language A courses are offered in over 50 languages.

There are three distinct Language A courses: Literature, Language and Literature, and Literature and Performance. In this post, we’ll break down each option to help you choose the one that best suits your interests and goals.

Language A: Literature

This course is focused on the in-depth study of literary texts across genres, cultures, and historical periods. It places a strong emphasis on comparative analysis, encouraging students to explore common themes, motifs, and stylistic devices across different works.

The course also introduces various literary theories, such as feminist and postcolonial criticism, to help students analyze texts from diverse perspectives.

This course is ideal for students with a strong interest in literature and a passion for analyzing texts in depth. It suits those who enjoy exploring ideas critically and expressing their insights through analytical writing and discussion.

Language A: Language and Literature

Language and Literature is a course that examines both literary and non-literary texts. Students engage with a wide variety of texts, including media, photography, and other non-traditional forms, alongside traditional literary works (poems etc.).

The course emphasizes the exploration and analysis of how texts are constructed, focusing on their target audience, purpose, and context. This approach encourages students to think critically about how meaning is shaped and how texts interact with cultural and historical influences.

This course is best-suited for those who do not enjoy engaging into extensive literary analysis.

Language A: Literature and Performance

This is an interdisciplinary course that combines the study of literary texts with the art of performing. It focuses on the interplay between literature and its transformation into live performance, allowing students to explore how meaning and emotion are conveyed through performance. It is important to keep in mind that this course is offered only at SL.

Students engage in analyzing literary works and then bringing them to life on stage. This encourages students to interpret literature in innovative ways and consider modern contexts.

This course is ideal for students who have a passion for performing. This course is also a great way to develop presentation and public performance skills.
