Text types are structured ways of communicating information through style, form, and language. Understanding the different text types in the English A Literature course allows students to engage critically with literary works, demonstrating knowledge of authorial choices, purpose, audience, and context. In this post, we'll dive into the various text types you may encounter in IB English A Literature.

IB English A Literature Text Types

Poem

A poem communicates emotion and imagery through rhythm, structure, and figurative language. It uses patterns to create meaning beyond literal interpretation, often exploring themes such as love, loss, nature, or identity. In IB English A Literature, poems frequently appear in Paper 1 as unseen texts. Students must analyze how poetic techniques such as diction, enjambment, rhythm, etc. convey meaning. Students may also have to analyze changes in mood or perspective and explain how these changes reflect the poet’s main message. Typical poetic features include rhythm patterns, lineation, figurative language (metaphor, simile, personification), sound devices (alliteration, assonance), and tone variation

Fictional Prose (Novels, Excerpts, and Short Stories)

A novel is an extended narrative exploring characters, ideas, and conflicts over time. It allows for thorough plot development, making it one of the most popular literary works seen in IB English A Literature. Students often analyze unseen novel excerpts in Paper 1 or write their Paper 2 analysis using a prescribed novel studied throughout the IB English A Literature course. Key elements from novels include motifs, setting, voice, and narrative perspective. Typical features also include descriptive prose, dialogue, imagery, symbolism, flashbacks/flashforwards, or internal monologue

A short story uses similar literary techniques to a novel, but has a much more concise plot, often centred on a single event or theme. In IB English Literature, short stories may also appear in Paper 1 or be studied as part of a prescribed work. Students should analyze narrative structure, character development, and point of view, identifying key turning points within the work. Typical features include concise plotlines, few characters, and a focus on internal conflict.

Drama/Play

Drama is a literary text that focuses on dialogue, conflict, and action. It relies on character interaction and stage settings rather than narration to communicate meaning. A play is a drama acted out on stage and explores relationships, power, and morality through both spoken and unspoken tension. In IB English A Literature, students analyze how playwrights use techniques such as dialogue, play acts, and stage directions to express emotions. In Paper 2 or the Individual Oral, students can explore how performance choices such as lighting, movement, and tone shape meaning. Typical features include dialogue-driven scenes, stage directions, dramatic irony, soliloquies, and tension between characters

Autobiography/Memoir

An autobiography or memoir is a personal narrative that explores memory, identity, and self-perception, often aiming to find meaning in the author's lived experience. In IB English A Literature, students analyze how narrative voice, structure, and tone convey the author's self-awareness and emotions. Students also learn how memories and subjectivity shape perspective, and how the use of language shows intimacy or reliability. Typical features include first-person narration, a reflective tone, chronological organization of ideas, and sensory descriptions. Themes such as the author's growth and resilience are often explored.
