The CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) learning outcomes define the skills and personal growth students are expected to achieve through their experiences. They guide reflection and help students develop attributes such as collaboration, perseverance, and global awareness. Through this guide, you will find out what CAS Learning Outcomes are and how you can use them effectively in the IB Program.

IB CAS Learning Outcomes

Fulfilment of CAS requires students to attain the seven CAS learning outcomes. Via their CAS portfolio, students provide evidence showcasing their achievement of each learning outcome.

  1. Identify own strengths and develop areas for growth - Students learn to recognize their personal skills, talents, and abilities, understanding that some areas are more developed than others. This outcome encourages self-awareness, prompting students to reflect on their capabilities and limitations. This allows students to set realistic goals for personal development across creativity, activity, and service.

  2. Demonstrate that challenges have been undertaken, developing new skills in the process - This outcome focuses on stepping out of comfort zones and embracing challenges. Students engage in activities that may be unfamiliar while acquiring new skills or refining existing ones. Reflection on these challenges helps build confidence and appreciate the value of learning from both successes and setbacks. A fresh challenge could manifest as either an unfamiliar encounter or as an extension of a pre-existing one.

  3. Demonstrate how to initiate and plan a CAS experience - Students develop the ability to conceptualize, plan, and execute CAS experiences, whether individually or collaboratively. This involves setting objectives and anticipating challenges. Students learn to take responsibility for their actions, apply organizational skills, and reflect on how careful planning impacts the success and outcomes of their CAS activities.

  4. Show commitment to, and perseverance in, CAS experiences - Students exhibit consistent participation and enthusiastic engagement in CAS activities as well as effort in long-term or challenging activities. Commitment shows responsibility and motivation even when progress is slow or tasks are demanding. Reflecting on these experiences allows students to appreciate the value of persistence and personal growth.

  5. Demonstrate the skills and recognize the benefits of working collaboratively - Students can critically analyze the advantages and obstacles of collaboration acquired through CAS engagements. Students engage with peers, mentors, or community members, learning how to contribute effectively within a group. They develop communication, negotiation, leadership, and conflict-resolution skills through this process.

  6. Demonstrate engagement with issues of global significance - This outcome encourages students to explore and act on issues that extend beyond their immediate environment. Students learn to display their comprehension of global issues, make conscientious decisions, and take suitable actions in response to these issues, whether at the local, national, or international level. Through thoughtful decision-making and responsible initiatives, students develop an awareness of how individual contributions can affect communities on a broader scale.

  7. Recognize and consider the ethics of choices and actions - Students reflect on the moral implications of their decisions and actions within CAS activities. They consider fairness, honesty, and responsibility, ensuring that their engagement is respectful and just. This outcome develops ethical reasoning, promoting accountability and conscientious behaviour. By evaluating the potential consequences of their actions, students learn to make decisions that positively impact themselves, others, and the wider community.

What next?

Now that you are familiar with the 7 learning outcomes, you should employ them in your CAS portfolio. We prepared a couple of tips that will help you! By incorporating them into your work, you can effectively demonstrate your achievement of the learning outcomes and showcase the depth of your CAS experiences.

  • Reflection - ensure each CAS experience includes thorough reflection on how it demonstrates each learning outcome. Reflect not only on what you did but also on what you learned from the experience.

  • Planning and Initiative - document the process of planning and initiating your CAS activities. This could include setting goals, creating action plans, and taking the initiative to start new projects or activities.

  • Collaboration - highlight instances where you collaborated with others in their CAS experiences. This could involve working with classmates, community members, or organizations to achieve common goals.

  • Commitment - reflect on your level of commitment to each CAS experience. How consistently did you participate? Did you overcome challenges or setbacks?

  • Ethical Considerations -  consider the ethical implications of your CAS activities. How did your actions impact others, and how did you ensure you acted responsibly and ethically?

  • Personal Growth - reflect on how each CAS experience contributed to your personal growth and development. What new skills did you acquire? How did you challenge yourself?

  • Global Engagement - explore the global dimensions of their CAS experiences. How did they engage with global issues or perspectives? Did they take action to address issues at the local, national, or international level?
