Are you a current IB Physics student and are wondering what you need to do to achieve a perfect score? Look no further as this post is here to provide you with some guidance on how you can achieve a 7 in IB Physics!

How to get a 7 in IB Physics

Master the fundamental concepts

IB Physics requires students to understand and apply many complex topics such as kinematics, forces, energy, waves, electricity, and magnetism. Students should ensure they can understand the theory behind these concepts as well as their application in the real world.

Understand, don't memorise

A thorough understanding of physics is necessary during exams as students are often required to apply knowledge from various disciplines in physics. Rather than simply memorizing the theory or formulas, students are encouraged to understand the theory and reasoning behind what they are studying in IB Physics. This is because most questions are application-based rather than memorization-based. For example, exam questions will never just ask you to state a formula or explain what a symbol in an equation means; rather you could be asked to use a formula to calculate an unknown value.

Learn the IB command terms

Pay attention to words like "explain," "describe," "calculate," and "justify" in exam questions. Each type of command term has a different meaning and requires you to answer exam questions in a certain way. For example, "explain" and "describe" might sound quite similar but may have different meanings on a test. A full list of IB Physics command terms can be found here.

Complete past papers

The best way to revise for an exam and get a 7 on it is to do past papers. The exam format is very similar from year to year and questions can often follow the same patterns (i.e. values change but question style stays the same). Aim to do past papers dating back at least 5 years from the exam session you are planning to sit for. Older papers can also be done, however, you should be mindful that the IB changes their syllabi regularly so older papers may not be representative of the current testable content. Nevertheless, you can still do older papers as extra practice. You could even set a timer to see if you can finish the past papers within the time you will be given during your actual exam.

Practice mathematical skills

IB Physics is highly math-dependent and involves many equations and formulae. Students should ensure they are comfortable with the different types of equations used in IB Physics. Students must also be familiar with rearranging equations to solve for unknown variables.

Craft a strong IA

The IA makes up 20% of your final grade in IB Physics, which is a significant amount. You should start the IA process as early as you can to give yourself enough time to choose a topic, conduct experiments, write a draft, and finalize your IA. Make sure to follow a logical structure as outlined in this post, including an introduction, methodology, data presentation, analysis, evaluation, and conclusion. Submit your draft to your teacher for feedback on how to improve. For further guidance, check out our wide range of Physics IAs to see detailed comments on what makes a good IA. To be sure your IA is of the highest quality, you can also submit it to Clastify's review service

Practice data questions

A significant portion of the IB Physics examination focuses on data-based questions. These require you to interpret experimental results, analyze graphs, identify trends, and perform calculations based on provided information. Practice data-based questions and look at the mark schemes to understand what examiners are looking for when it comes to data analysis responses.

Study consistently

IB Physics is a demanding course and is one of the most challenging science subjects. Ensuring consistent study habits is crucial to achieving a 7 as you need to practice questions and revise the material weekly (or biweekly at least) to ensure it stays fresh in your mind. Create a dedicated study schedule and practice IB Physics at a fixed date and time weekly. Ensure your study space is free of any distractions and allows you to focus thoroughly on the material.
