English A Paper 2 Tips

The IB English A Paper 2 is a written exam where students write a comparative essay based on the works studied during the course. In this exam, students choose from 4 essay questions that prompt them to compare and contrast two texts, focusing on themes, characters, stylistic features, or other elements of the texts. Both Lit and Lang&Lit students receive the same 4 questions and the essays are evaluated using the same criteria. For SL and HL, students have 1 hour and 45 minutes to complete their comparative essay. Here are our top tips to help you ace this exam:

  • Be creative. If you find that none of the four questions perfectly align with the texts you’ve studied, don’t panic. Approach the situation creatively by interpreting the prompts or texts in a way that plays to your strengths. Remember, there are no right or wrong answers as long as you provide a well-supported and logical analysis.

  • Ensure your essay is balanced. Aim to provide the same amount of detail and analysis for both texts. This means giving equal attention to evaluating each text's themes, stylistic features, etc. By doing so, you you ensure a fair comparison and demonstrate a thorough understanding of both works.

  • Focus on the key moments of your text. Realistically, you won't be able to memorise all quotes or scenes from your texts. Select the most significant ones and analyze them thoroughly during your exam preparation. This will ensure that you enter the exam room with a deep understanding and insightful analysis at your fingertips

  • Craft a strong thesis. Your thesis should present a specific, arguable point that your essay will support. Ensure it addresses the prompt and provides a roadmap for your argument.

  • Structure your essay Theme by Theme. To gain a better understanding of this recommended structure check out our English Paper 2 Format and Structure post.

  • Plan. Before you start writing your response, take at least 10-15 minutes to plan your response. Outline your thesis, the arguments you'll make, and the evidence you'll use to support them. Begin writing only after you’ve created a comprehensive essay plan. This approach will help keep your argument focused and your essay well-organized.

  • Include topic sentences. Begin each body paragraph with a sentence that outlines the main argument you will discuss. This approach helps to clearly convey the focus of each paragraph and guides the reader through your analysis. Additionally, well-crafted topic sentences provide a cohesive structure, making it easier for the reader to follow your argument and understand how each point supports your overall thesis.

  • Include conclusive sentences. Conclude each paragraph with a brief sentence that summarizes the main point discussed. This helps to reinforce the argument you've made and provides a clear transition to the next point. Conclusive sentences can also enhance the overall coherence of your essay by linking individual arguments back to your central thesis.

  • Use an academic tone. Avoid personal pronouns such as ''I'' or ''Me''. Instead, focus on presenting your arguments and analysis in a formal and objective manner. This approach maintains a professional voice and hence strengthens the credibility of your writing.

  • Be aware of the context the texts were written in. Examine the authors' backgrounds and the historical context in which the texts were written to understand how these factors might shape their interpretation.

  • Practice with past papers. Nothing will boost your skills as much as regularly sitting down to write essay responses. This routine helps you become familiar with different question formats and improves your ability to manage time effectively during exams. Additionally, reviewing your past work allows you to identify and address areas for improvement, leading to more refined and confident writing.

  • Time yourself. When practicing, time yourself to simulate real exam conditions. Set a clock for the duration of the exam and work on your essay within that time limit. This will help you manage your time effectively and ensure you can complete your responses comfortably within the allotted period.
