English A: Literature Paper 1 Format and Structure

The English A: Literature Paper 1 is a critical analysis exam where students are required to write a commentary on an unseen literary text. Students may encounter a variety of texts, including fictional prose, non-fiction prose, poetry, and even dramatic plays. The goal is to demonstrate the ability to analyze and interpret the text's meaning, structure, and language.

SL students have 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete a commentary on one of the two provided texts, while HL students must write two commentaries in 2 hours and 15 minutes. Despite the difference in time and number of commentaries, the format and structure for both levels are the same and are as follows:

Introduction

  • State the text type, its author and audience.
  • Then, it is best to state the text's purpose - i.e. the effect the author aimed to achieve with their text.
  • After that, include a thesis - i.e. a single sentence in the Introduction that highlights how the writer achieves their overall purpose. The thesis essentially serves as a broad summary of your argument, which you will then substantiate with evidence and analysis throughout the body of the essay.

Body

  • The body of the essay is where the main analysis takes place. In the body paragraphs, students aim to provide textual evidence and analysis to support their thesis.
  • Each paragraph should focus on a specific aspect of the text. Students have the flexibility to organize their text as they see fit. They may choose to structure their analysis by:
    • ideas/themes
    • sections (stanza by stanza)
    • literary devices
    • SPECS (Summary, Purpose, Emotion, Craftmanship, Structure)
    • as well as other ways.
  • We however strongly advise students to structure their essay by ideas/themes as this will make the arguments flow much more naturally. It is more effective to analyse the literary devices, structure and other authorial methods in the context of the theme they craft and how it affects the purpose of the text, rather than grouping these authorial literary methods together. This approach ensures that the overall argument feels cohesive and fluid, rather than appearing artificial through a disjointed, one-by-one analysis.
  • Make sure that each paragraph begins with a topic sentence that reflects the ideas presented in the thesis.
  • Do not forget to also include a conclusive sentence at the end of each paragraph that links the analysis back to the thesis.

Conclusion

  • Restate your thesis. It is best to do this in a non-repetitive way.
  • Synthesize the main points discussed in the body paragraphs of their commentary. Instead of merely summarizing the arguments, it is crucial to emphasize how the interplay of these factors contributes to the author's intended purpose.
  • At the very end, it is good to offer a final insight or interpretation of the text.
