Are you beginning the process of applying to college and figuring out all the essays you need to write? If so, you may be wondering what the difference is between the Common App essay and supplemental essays. This post is here to help provide some clarification regarding these essays so that you are well-versed in the differences before you begin your college application process!

Common App Essay vs Supplemental Essay

Aspect

Common App Essay

Supplemental Essay

Word Limit

There is a word limit of 250-650 words. See this post here for more information on the word limit of the Common App essay.

The word limit can vary depending on the supplemental essay prompts given by each school. Supplemental essay word limits usually range anywhere from 50-300 words, although some schools may have word limits that are higher or lower than this.

Purpose

The purpose of the Common App essay is to provide the admissions committee with a broad overview of the student's abilities, growth, and personality. It is meant to give a general overview of some aspects of the student, but does not give any school-specific information about them.

Supplemental essays give admissions committees more information in addition to the Comon App essay on an applicant's fit for a school, such as their academic background or interests in certain faculties within the school. Many schools often have a "Why us?" question that aims to assess a student's passion for attending that particular school and how well they would fit into the community.

Prompts

There is a fixed list of prompts given by the Common App. The 2024-25 prompts can be found here.

The prompts are based on the unique values, programs, and requirements of each school and can hence vary between different colleges and universities.

Main Focus

The main focus is on the student as a person rather than on academic achievements, although they may discuss academic successes if they wish. However, the Common App essay is designed so that the admissions committee gets to know the student better as a person - what are their beliefs, values, motivations, ability to grow, etc?

The main focus is for admissions officers to see the school-specific fit of the student. The main focus varies among schools, with some prompts being more academic-focused and other prompts being more extracurricular-focused.

Audience

Since the Common App essay is accepted by so many schools (see the full list here), the audience of this essay is general admissions officers across many institutions.

The audience of supplemental essays is the specific admissions committee at the respective schools the student has chosen to apply to.

Requirement

The Common App essay is required by most of the schools that accept applications using the Common App.

Supplemental essays are required only by schools that specifically request them, which varies based on the respective schools the student is applying to. In many cases, supplemental essay prompts are provided by the school while answering them is optional but may strengthen a student's application.

Structure

This essay has a traditional structure of an introduction, body, and conclusion. Some flexibility in structure is allowed to show the student's creativity.

Since the word limit is much less than the Common App essay, students usually answer these prompts in 1-2 paragraphs rather than following a traditional structure of introduction, body, and conclusion. Alternatively, if students wish to follow a traditional structure, they must ensure that their introduction, body, and conclusion are concise enough to fit within the word limit.

Reusability

One essay can be used to apply to up to 20 institutions.

Supplemental essay prompts vary between schools so the student will need to write a brand new customized essay for each school they are applying to. Some institutions may even require more than one supplemental essay.

Length

The Common App essay is longer, allowing for a more  in-depth exploration of the prompt.

Supplemental essays are shorter, often asking for direct and concise responses to the prompt.

Impact on Application

This is a main component of the application of students who choose to apply using the Common App portal, and hence has a high impact on a student's application.

Supplemental essays may be optional in some cases, but will greatly help strengthen an application when included as they show admissions committees more school-specific information regarding the student.

We hope that this guide has helped you understand the differences between the Common App essay and supplemental essays. Good luck with your college applications!
