Biology IA word count and page limit [2025 UPDATED]

Are you working on your Biology IA but you're feeling uncertain about the requirements and structure? If so this guide is just for you! Check it out to get familiar with the topic of this internal assessment and boost your chances of writing a great report.

Biology IA is a scientific investigation that should take up to 3,000 words. There is no page limit. It is recommended to use a 12-point font with double spacing. The basic structure includes an introduction, main body, and conclusion, which can be further subdivided. The report requires a purposeful research question based on which students conduct the investigation.

Introduction

Start your essay by presenting the research question and the context of your study. Present and justify your hypothesis based on the theory you’ve learned. Demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the topic by providing definitions and characteristics of the species, reactions, phenomena, etc. which are subject to your study. Make sure that you are using specific biological terminology in an appropriate context and that you demonstrate personal engagement. You need to show evidence of initiative and input in conducting the research, it is also good to underline the report's association with one’s areas of interest. The introduction should be around 500 words.

Main body

The main body covers your investigation and analysis. We suggest devoting around 2,000 words for this section. Start with methodology, detailing what kind and how many of the equipment and materials are needed to conduct the experiment. Include step-by-step instructions for the procedure and do not forget about the apparatus' measurement uncertainties throughout the report. Differentiate between the controlled and uncontrolled variables, and determine what could be their influence on the outcomes of the experiment. After having finished the methodology, move on to presenting the obtained results. Process them appropriately to find out the answer to the research question. Include formulas and calculations with well-described units. Analyze the data trends and investigate any anomalies, considering the factors that could have led to the observed deviations. Incorporate relevant quantitative and qualitative raw data that could support a valid conclusion. For clarity and data presentation use graphs, tables, and images.

Conclusion

Remember to clearly state the answer to the research question. Evaluate your investigation and results in line with the focus of your research. Show awareness of environmental concerns for instance regarding resource wastage during the experiment. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of your methodology and propose improvements that would increase the quality of your report. Finally, suggest potential extensions for further research. The conclusion should up to 500 words.
