Are you a current IB English B student and wondering how to get a perfect score? This post is here to provide you with some guidance on how you can achieve your goal of getting a 7. Read on for some of our top tips to help you succeed in IB English B.

How to get a 7 in IB English B

Master the fundamental concepts

The main purpose of IB English B is to develop students' ability to communicate effectively in English if it is not their first language. IB English B focuses on improving reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills and understanding how English is used in daily situations. The course emphasizes language acquisition where students are expected to develop their oral and written production and comprehension skills. To succeed in IB English B, make sure you are constantly developing your reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills by mastering fundamental concepts like grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, etc. Students should also learn to be familiar with the various types of English (e.g. British, American).

Understand, don't memorize

IB English B assesses how well students can analyze texts and understand the impact of the English language in various social contexts and is highly focused on application rather than memorization. Students cannot focus solely on memorization as exam prompts rely on the student's understanding of vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, etc. Students should make sure they have a strong foundation in these concepts as exam questions will often require students to read and understand texts of various lengths (e.g. ads, letters, news articles, etc.), along with having to demonstrate writing skills in different scenarios (e.g. writing a letter to a friend, arguing a point of view, etc.).

Improve vocabulary and grammar

Improve your vocabulary by reading a wide range of texts to learn new words. Create flashcards for challenging words and practice using them in different contexts to reinforce retention. Read simple books in English that will allow you to understand the context while learning new words. Ensure you practice grammar skills such as tenses, direct/indirect object pronouns, etc. Use resources such as Youtube tutorials to help you learn the use of English in spoken contexts.

Complete past papers

The best way to revise for an exam and get a 7 on it is to do past papers. The exam format is very similar from year to year, and questions can often follow the same patterns. Aim to do past papers dating back at least 5 years from the exam session you are planning to sit for. Older papers can also be done, however, you should be mindful that the IB changes their syllabi regularly, so older papers may not be representative of the current testable content. Nevertheless, you can still do older papers as extra practice. To simulate exam conditions, you could even set a timer to see if you can finish the past papers within the time allotted for your actual exam.

Immerse yourself in the language

The best way to learn a foreign language is to practice language immersion. Try to find groups or tutors online or in-person where you can try speaking or texting in English. If you have any friends who are native English speakers, don't hesitate to ask them for any tips on how to improve your language skills! If you want an extra challenge you could try setting your phone's default language to English so that you can refine your reading and comprehension skills while using your phone for daily activities.

Prepare for the IO

The IO makes up 20% of your final grade in IB English B, which is a significant amount. Students will receive a previously unseen photograph and will have to describe what is going on in the photograph, followed by a brief discussion. This requires students to have a strong command of the language and think quickly to find the best ways to describe the image. Practice speaking in front of the mirror to master your timing/pacing, intonation, clarity of speech, etc. You should start the IO process as early as you can to give yourself enough time to practice your speaking skills and get feedback from your teacher regarding how to improve pacing, use of vocabulary, etc.

Improve listening skills

Listen to English podcasts, news, and interviews with different accents to prepare for the listening comprehension part of your exam. This will help you learn how to listen for key information as well as get a feel of how fast native speakers might talk. If they are speaking too fast for you to understand, try to find beginner English resources such as shows for teenagers that generally use more simple language compared to watching advanced videos such as new channels, for example.
