I was born in Tuckahoe, near Hillsborough, and about twelve miles from Easton, in Talbot county, Maryland. I have no accurate knowledge of my age, never having seen any authentic record containing it. By far the larger part of the slaves know as little of their ages as horses know of theirs, and it is the wish of most masters within my knowledge to keep their slaves thus ignorant. I do not remember to have ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday. They seldom come nearer to it than planting-time, harvest-time, cherry-time, spring-time, or fall-time. A want of information concerning my own was a source of unhappiness to me even during childhood. The white children could tell their ages. I could not tell why I ought to be deprived of the same privilege. I was not allowed to make any inquiries of my master concerning it. He deemed all such inquiries on the part of a slave improper and impertinent, and evidence of a restless spirit. The nearest estimate I can give makes me now between twenty-seven and twenty-eight years of age. I come to this, from hearing my master say, some time during 1835, I was about seventeen years old.

My mother was named Harriet Bailey. She was the daughter of Isaac and Betsey Bailey, both colored, and quite dark. My mother was of a darker complexion than either my grandmother or grandfather.

My father was a white man. He was admitted to be such by all I ever heard speak of my parentage. The opinion was also whispered that my master was my father; but of the correctness of this opinion, I know nothing; the means of knowing was withheld from me. My mother and I were separated when I was but an infant—before I knew her as my mother. It is a common custom, in the part of Maryland from which I ran away, to part children from their mothers at a very early age. Frequently, before the child has reached its twelfth month, its mother is taken from it, and hired out on some farm a considerable distance off, and the child is placed under the care of an old woman, too old for field labor. For what this separation is done, I do not know, unless it be to hinder the development of the child’s affection toward its mother, and to blunt and destroy the natural affection of the mother for the child. Every New Englander might easily raise all his own breadstuffs in this land of rye and Indian corn, and not depend on distant and fluctuating markets for them. Yet so far are we from simplicity and independence that, in Concord, fresh and sweet meal is rarely sold in the shops, and hominy and corn in a still coarser form are hardly used by any. For the most part the farmer gives to his cattle and hogs the grain of his own producing, and buys flour, which is at least no more wholesome, at a greater cost, at the store. I saw that I could easily raise my bushel or two of rye and Indian corn, for the former will grow on the poorest land, and the latter does not require the best, and grind them in a hand-mill, and so do without rice and pork; and if I must have some concentrated sweet, I found by experiment that I could make a very good molasses either of pumpkins or beets, and I knew that I needed only to set out a few maples to obtain it more easily still, and while these were growing I could use various substitutes beside those which I have named. “For,” as the Forefathers sang,—

Let me reason with the supporters of this opinion, who have any knowledge of human nature, do they imagine that marriage can eradicate the habitude of life? The woman who has only been taught to please, will soon find that her charms are oblique sun-beams, and that they cannot have much effect on her husband's heart when they are seen every day, when the summer is past and gone. Will she then have sufficient native energy to look into herself for comfort, and cultivate her dormant faculties? or, is it not more rational to expect, that she will try to please other men; and, in the emotions raised by the expectation of new conquests, endeavour to forget the mortification her love or pride has received? When the husband ceases to be a lover--and the time will inevitably come, her desire of pleasing will then grow languid, or become a spring of bitterness; and love, perhaps, the most evanescent of all passions, gives place to jealousy or vanity.

I now speak of women who are restrained by principle or prejudice; such women though they would shrink from an intrigue with real abhorrence, yet, nevertheless, wish to be convinced by the homage of gallantry, that they are cruelly neglected by their husbands; or, days and weeks are spent in dreaming of the happiness enjoyed by congenial souls, till the health is undermined and the spirits broken by discontent. How then can the great art of pleasing be such a necessary study? it is only useful to a mistress; the chaste wife, and serious mother, should only consider her power to please as the polish of her virtues, and the affection of her husband as one of the comforts that render her task less difficult, and her life happier. He advises them to cultivate a fondness for dress, because a fondness for dress, he asserts, is natural to them. I am unable to comprehend what either he or Rousseau mean, when they frequently use this indefinite term. If they told us, that in a pre-existent state the soul was fond of dress, and brought this inclination with it into a new body, I should listen to them with a half smile, as I often do when I hear a rant about innate elegance. But if he only meant to say that the exercise of the faculties will produce this fondness, I deny it. It is not natural; but arises, like false ambition in men, from a love of power.

All this is easy, but it is neither sensible nor just. Someone had blundered, but that was long before Oliver Howard was born; there was criminal aggression and heedless neglect, but without some system of control there would have been far more than there was. Had that control been from within, the Negro would have been re-enslaved, to all intents and purposes. Coming as the control did from without, perfect men and methods would have bettered all things; and even with imperfect agents and questionable methods, the work accomplished was not undeserving of commendation.

Such was the dawn of Freedom; such was the work of the Freedmen’s Bureau, which, summed up in brief, may be epitomized thus: for some fifteen million dollars, beside the sums spent before 1865, and the dole of benevolent societies, this Bureau set going a system of free labor, established a beginning of peasant proprietorship, secured the recognition of black freedmen before courts of law, and founded the free common school in the South. On the other hand, it failed to begin the establishment of good-will between ex-masters and freedmen, to guard its work wholly from paternalistic methods which discouraged self-reliance, and to carry out to any considerable extent its implied promises to furnish the freedmen with land. Its successes were the result of hard work, supplemented by the aid of philanthropists and the eager striving of black men. Its failures were the result of bad local agents, the inherent difficulties of the work, and national neglect.

Such an institution, from its wide powers, great responsibilities, large control of moneys, and generally conspicuous position, was naturally open to repeated and bitter attack. It sustained a searching Congressional investigation at the instance of Fernando Wood in 1870. Its archives and few remaining functions were with blunt discourtesy transferred from Howard’s control, in his absence, to the supervision of Secretary of War Belknap in 1872, on the Secretary’s recommendation. Finally, in consequence of grave intimations of wrong-doing made by the Secretary and his subordinates, General Howard was court-martialed in 1874. In both of these trials the Commissioner of the Freedmen’s Bureau was officially exonerated from any wilful misdoing, and his work commended. Nevertheless, many unpleasant things were brought to light,—the methods of transacting the business of the Bureau were faulty; several cases of defalcation were proved, and other frauds strongly suspected; there were some business transactions which savored of dangerous speculation, if not dishonesty; and around it all lay the smirch of the Freedmen’s Bank.

O, what days and nights of fear and sorrow that man caused me! Reader, it is not to awaken sympathy for myself that I am telling you truthfully what I suffered in slavery. I do it to kindle a flame of compassion in your hearts for my sisters who are still in bondage, suffering as I once suffered.

I once saw two beautiful children playing together. One was a fair white child; the other was her slave, and also her sister. When I saw them embracing each other, and heard their joyous laughter, I turned sadly away from the lovely sight. I foresaw the inevitable blight that would fall on the little slave’s heart. I knew how soon her laughter would be changed to sighs. The fair child grew up to be a still fairer woman. From childhood to womanhood her pathway was blooming with flowers, and overarched by a sunny sky. Scarcely one day of her life had been clouded when the sun rose on her happy bridal morning.

How had those years dealt with her slave sister, the little playmate of her childhood? She, also, was very beautiful; but the flowers and sunshine of love were not for her. She drank the cup of sin, and shame, and misery, whereof her persecuted race are compelled to drink.

In view of these things, why are ye silent, ye free men and women of the north? Why do your tongues falter in maintenance of the right? Would that I had more ability! But my heart is so full, and my pen is so weak! There are noble men and women who plead for us, striving to help those who cannot help themselves. God bless them! God give them strength and courage to go on! God bless those, every where, who are laboring to advance the cause of humanity!

VI. The Jealous Mistress.

I would ten thousand times rather that my children should be the half-starved paupers of Ireland than to be the most pampered among the slaves of America. I would rather drudge out my life on a cotton plantation, till the grave opened to give me rest, than to live with an unprincipled master and a jealous mistress. The felon’s home in a penitentiary is preferable. He may repent, and turn from the error of his ways, and so find peace; but it is not so with a favorite slave. She is not allowed to have any pride of character. It is deemed a crime in her to wish to be virtuous.

### What makes prose non-fiction literary?

**Prose non-fiction is writing in sentences and paragraphs that presents people, events or ideas as belonging to the real world while using deliberate literary shaping.** Unlike a novel, it doesn’t invent its material. The form, though, is still constructed. Writers choose details, order events, build patterns and work with rhythm, imagery and voice.

“Non-fiction” doesn’t mean uncrafted, neutral or automatically factual in every detail. A writer might compress a remembered scene. An argument can foreground some evidence while omitting other evidence, and a self-portrait may be consciously stylized. Analysis therefore needs to consider what the text claims about reality, as well as how its language turns that claim into an experience for the reader.

The guide recognizes that autobiography and biography, diary entries, essays, letters, magazine articles, manifestos, memoirs, opinion columns, parodies, pastiches, speeches and travelogues may be literary or non-literary. It depends on the particular text. A text is treated as literary and studied as part of a literary work if its author appears on the *Prescribed reading list*, is recognized as a literary writer, or gives it a clear aesthetic purpose.

An **aesthetic purpose is an intention to shape language and form so that the manner of expression carries artistic significance as well as information.** Don’t focus only on whether the subject is interesting. Look for pattern, voice, symbolism, tonal control and structural design.

### Readers, writers and texts

Cultural, historical and literary contexts shape how literature is produced and received. Writers draw on the forms and traditions available to them, while readers bring their own beliefs, knowledge and expectations. Meaning emerges through the interaction between textual detail, the writer’s choices and the reader’s interpretation.

That doesn’t make every interpretation valid. A defensible reading uses precise textual evidence and accounts for the passage as a whole. Discussion with other readers may change the reading because meaning is constructed and negotiated. Even so, the text limits what can reasonably be claimed.

This interaction is particularly visible in prose non-fiction. Readers must respond to real-world claims while staying alert to the creativity used to make them. Language can inform, persuade and move us; it can also transform how a person, community or event is understood.

### The self on the page

A first-person speaker may resemble the historical writer, but they aren’t perfectly interchangeable. A **persona is a textual version of the speaker or writer constructed through selected language, details and attitudes.** Even an apparently candid “I” depends on choices: what the writer discloses or withholds, which experiences are narrated, and how the voice sounds.

The person who originally underwent an experience is different from the later persona narrating it. Looking back can produce tenderness, embarrassment, irony or judgment. A mature narrator may grasp what the younger self could not, so a single voice contains two perspectives.

**Stance is the position or attitude a writer adopts toward a subject, audience or disputed idea.** A stance may be confident, tentative, indignant, reflective, detached or ambivalent. Rather than giving the whole passage one vague label, track modal verbs and evaluative adjectives, as well as sentence patterns and shifts in tone.

### How credibility is constructed

**Credibility is the impression that a speaker is knowledgeable, honest or otherwise worthy of trust.** The text creates this effect, but it doesn’t prove that every claim is true. Precise observation or relevant experience may build credibility. So can apparent candour, acknowledgement of uncertainty or fair treatment of an opposing position.

Small admissions can be especially persuasive. A persona who concedes faulty memory or personal involvement may seem to limit their authority, yet the admission can strengthen trust. The speaker comes across as self-aware rather than falsely omniscient. Polished certainty, meanwhile, may establish authority—or reveal arrogance. Its effect depends on the context and the reader the voice seems to imagine.

When analysing credibility, first identify the choice. Explain what version of the speaker it constructs, then connect that persona to the reader’s likely response. “The first person makes it personal” is only a starting point. The real question is what kind of person the first-person voice asks us to trust.

### Purpose is usually layered

**Purpose is the intended work a text seeks to perform for an audience.** Prose non-fiction might argue for a position or testify to an experience. It can preserve a memory, or persuade readers to think or act differently. Often, these purposes overlap. A remembered episode might defend an identity at the same time; an essay might explore uncertainty instead of offering a settled conclusion.

Don’t reduce purpose to an infinitive such as “to inform.” Ask what the reader is supposed to understand, feel, question or reconsider—and about whom. For example, a public account of a private experience might seek sympathy for an individual while also asking for recognition of a group.

**Audience is the readership or group of listeners a text anticipates and addresses through its language, assumptions and form.** The actual audience may be wider than the intended audience, or may encounter the text much later. Clues to the anticipated audience include background explanations, specialist vocabulary and shared values. Forms of address and the objections a writer expects can also help us infer that audience.

Purpose and audience influence each other. Technical terminology might establish authority among informed readers, yet estrange newcomers. Inclusive pronouns can create solidarity. Commands, on the other hand, may mobilize sympathetic readers or provoke resistant ones. Name the relationship being constructed rather than simply claiming that a device “engages the audience.”

### Context and reception

**Context is the set of historical, cultural, social and personal circumstances relevant to a text’s production or reception.** It can explain why a claim feels urgent, why the writer chooses a particular form or why communities respond in different ways. Context should clarify textual details, not stand in for analysis.

Texts also interact with literary tradition. A writer may follow the reflective movement of an essay, the public urgency of a speech or the chronological expectations of life writing, then resist those conventions. Readers who know the form will notice these departures. Readers from different cultural belief systems may judge authority, privacy or testimony differently. Literary meaning is therefore negotiated rather than mechanically extracted.

### Structural building blocks

**Structure is the designed arrangement and relationship of a text’s parts.** In prose non-fiction, these parts might be claims, scenes, reflections, evidence, counterarguments or conclusions. Structure is more than an account of what happens in each paragraph. The order of those paragraphs creates its own logic.

An **argument is an organized line of reasoning that advances or tests a claim.** **Evidence is material offered to support, qualify or challenge a claim.** This evidence might appear as an observed detail, a documented fact, a quotation or personal experience. Its value rests on its relevance and sufficiency, as well as the authority behind it.

An **anecdote is a brief narrative of a particular incident used to illuminate a person, issue or broader claim.** It can make an abstraction concrete and give it emotional force. Still, one incident cannot automatically prove a universal rule. A **generalisation is a broad claim drawn from, or applied to, a class of people, events or experiences.** Look closely, then, at the move from anecdote to generalisation: has the writer earned that wider conclusion?

One common structure begins with a particular scene, moves into broader reflection, then returns to the scene after its significance has changed. A cumulative structure works differently, using several examples to make a claim seem increasingly unavoidable. Writers may also hold back the main claim so that readers experience events before being told how to interpret them.

By connecting scene, reflection, evidence and claim, a writer can build a developing argument instead of simply following chronological order.

### Organizing remembered life

Life unfolds continuously; life writing doesn’t reproduce that uninterrupted flow. Instead, selection and arrangement make remembered experience intelligible. **Chronology is an arrangement of events according to their order in time**, while a **non-linear structure is an arrangement that departs from continuous time order through devices such as retrospection, anticipation or association.**

Returning to an earlier event may mirror the movement of memory. It can reveal a cause only after its consequence or bring the past and present selves into contact. A gap might suggest forgetting, trauma, privacy or strategic omission. Don’t assume every discontinuity is accidental.

Useful structural markers include paragraph openings and endings, tense changes, repeated images and shifts between scene and commentary. After locating a shift, explain what has changed: perhaps the scale of the claim, the persona’s certainty, the emotional pressure or the reader’s understanding of an earlier detail.

### Rhetoric as purposeful shaping

**Rhetoric is the purposeful use of language and structure to influence an audience’s understanding, feeling or judgment.** Describing a feature as rhetorical doesn’t imply dishonesty. Rather, the expression has been shaped to produce an effect.

**Direct address is a rhetorical technique in which a speaker explicitly addresses a person or audience.** Names, second-person pronouns, questions or commands can create intimacy and solidarity; they may also convey accusation or pressure. Focus on the relationship created by the address.

**Repetition is the deliberate recurrence of a word, phrase, sound or syntactic pattern.** It may establish rhythm, emphasize a claim or connect separate moments. It can also reveal fixation. Look closely at whether repeated language keeps its original meaning or takes on a different force in a new context.

**Concession is a rhetorical move in which a writer acknowledges part of an opposing position or a limitation in their own case.** By making a concession, the writer may appear fair and credible before redirecting the argument. Consider its boundaries: exactly how much has been granted, and what remains firmly asserted?

**Irony is a disparity between an expressed or expected meaning and another meaning made available by the context.** A persona might say one thing but invite the reader to understand another. Alternatively, an outcome may contradict an earlier expectation. Irony can produce humour or criticism, as well as a painful distance between the narrating self and the remembered self.

### The turn

A **turn is a noticeable shift in a text’s thought, tone, direction or perspective.** A conjunction or short sentence may signal it, as might a paragraph break, change of tense or altered image. The turn reorganizes the material around it. An anecdote becomes evidence, certainty gives way to doubt, or private memory opens into public argument.

When analysing a technique, follow the full chain. Identify the specific choice, establish its immediate effect, then explain how that effect develops the text’s larger purpose or stance. Spotting a technique is only description; analysis explains how the choice shapes meaning.

### Different kinds of truth claim

A **truth claim is an assertion presented as an accurate account or valid interpretation of reality.** In prose non-fiction, a writer might claim factual truth about events or experiential truth about what something felt like. They may also offer interpretive truth about an event’s meaning. These claims can support each other, but they aren’t the same.

A **memoir is a form of life writing that selects and shapes remembered experiences around a particular period, relationship or concern.** A memoir may assert both that events happened and that the writer remembers them in a certain way. Memory, though, is retrospective and selective. Vivid detail creates immediacy, but it doesn’t verify accuracy by itself.

A **literary essay is a prose form in which a writer explores or argues ideas through a deliberately shaped personal or reflective voice.** Rather than following a strictly demonstrative path, it may move through exploration, qualification or digression. Uncertainty can be part of the writer’s intellectual honesty too.

A **testimony is an account in which a witness presents experience as evidence of events, conditions or wrongdoing.** Presence and lived experience may give it authority. At the same time, fear or trauma can complicate what the witness can tell, as can elapsed time and the pressure to represent others. Such limitations don’t automatically invalidate testimony; instead, they help define the kind of claim it makes.

### Selection, omission and uncertainty

No account can include everything. A writer chooses where to begin and end. They decide which voices to include and which events deserve more space. **Omission is the exclusion of potentially relevant material from an account.** It may result from the ordinary limits of memory or from ethical restraint. It can also involve deliberate manipulation. Whichever interpretation you make must be supported by the text and its context.

Pay close attention to markers of certainty and uncertainty. Precise dates can make a claim appear firm, as can declarative sentences and authoritative verbs. By contrast, modal verbs, approximations or self-corrections may reveal limitations. So can direct admissions of doubt. Qualification sometimes weakens a claim. In other cases, it makes the claim more trustworthy because the persona refuses to present false certainty.

### Positioning the reader

**Reader positioning is the use of textual choices to encourage readers to adopt a particular emotional, ethical or intellectual relationship to the subject.** The writer might place us beside a witness or within a collective “we.” We could instead be held at a critical distance from the writer’s former self, or put in the uncomfortable position of someone being accused.

Positioning invites a response; it isn’t mind control. Depending on their contexts and beliefs, readers may accept that invitation, resist it or renegotiate it. A strong interpretation therefore separates what the text encourages from what every reader supposedly feels. A useful phrasing is “the passage invites the reader to…” followed by precise evidence and an explanation of how the text creates that invitation.

### The task and its focus

**A guided analysis in this context refers to an exploration of the passage supported by a guiding question, which asks students to consider a technical or formal aspect of the passage.** The question offers a useful lens rather than a checklist of devices.

For the SL Paper 1 described by the guide, students have 1 hour 15 minutes. It carries 20 marks and is worth 35%. Students receive two previously unseen literary passages, each from a different literary form, and choose one to analyse. The passage may be a complete piece or an extract from a longer work. Wherever possible, the writers do not appear on the *Prescribed reading list*, and the passages are not taken from works likely to have been studied in class.

One guiding question accompanies each passage and focuses on a central technical or formal feature. Students don’t have to answer that exact question, though their analysis should maintain a clear focus. They may instead choose another significant technical or formal point of entry, provided it creates an equally coherent lens.

In prose non-fiction, the lens may connect several elements. A student could explore how shifts between anecdote and generalisation construct credibility, for instance, or how a retrospective persona positions readers toward a disputed memory. Whatever the focus, the analysis should cover the passage rather than remain fixed on one isolated occurrence.

### What the four criteria reward

Criterion A covers understanding and interpretation. It rewards accurate comprehension of literal meaning, reasoned conclusions about implications and subtleties, and well-chosen textual references that genuinely support the interpretation. Evidence needs to prove an idea, not simply be inserted and then abandoned.

Criterion B rewards analysis and evaluation: students explain how textual features and authorial choices shape meaning. Description identifies what the writer does. Analysis traces the effect, while evaluation considers how effectively or significantly that choice contributes to the passage’s larger work.

Criterion C focuses on organization and a coherent line of thought. Each paragraph should develop a distinct stage of the central interpretation while connecting with the others. It is usually stronger to organize the response around meaningful developments—such as the construction, testing and revision of the persona’s authority—than to work through an unrelated catalogue of techniques.

Criterion D covers clarity, variety, accuracy and appropriateness of language. **“Register” refers, in this context, to the candidate's use of elements such as vocabulary, tone, sentence structure and terminology appropriate to the analysis.** Literary terminology should sharpen the reasoning, while syntax and vocabulary stay controlled and readable.

Each criterion is marked out of five. At the highest level, they work together: apt references support a perceptive interpretation, convincing analysis develops it, a sustained focus gives it shape and precise language communicates it.

### The learner portfolio

The learner portfolio is not specifically assessed, but the guide presents it as an important space for developing Paper 1 skills. For this form, students can use it to:

- record an initial response to a prose non-fiction passage;
- devise guiding questions and test how each one changes the reading;
- identify less secure analytical skills and track their development;
- keep a record of the literary forms practised, ensuring coverage of the possible Paper 1 forms and noting the challenge each presents;
- compare later guided analyses with the first attempt and monitor changes in overall performance.

This practice follows the wider course movement from personal response toward interpretations tested against textual detail and the perspectives of other readers. It doesn’t erase the first response. Instead, it makes that response more precise, reasoned and defensible.
