“Mrs. Eberhardt. She goes around looking at people’s feet in their own homes.”

“I like your dress,” remarked Mrs. McKee, “I think it’s adorable.”

Mrs. Wilson rejected the compliment by raising her eyebrow in disdain.

“It’s just a crazy old thing,” she said. “I just slip it on sometimes when I don’t care what I look like.”

“But it looks wonderful on you, if you know what I mean,” pursued Mrs. McKee. “If Chester could only get you in that pose I think he could make something of it.”

We all looked in silence at Mrs. Wilson, who removed a strand of hair from over her eyes and looked back at us with a brilliant smile. Mr. McKee regarded her intently with his head on one side, and then moved his hand back and forth slowly in front of his face.

“I should change the light,” he said after a moment. “I’d like to bring out the modelling of the features. And I’d try to get hold of all the back hair.”

“I wouldn’t think of changing the light,” cried Mrs. McKee. “I think it’s—”

Her husband said “Sh!” and we all looked at the subject again, whereupon Tom Buchanan yawned audibly and got to his feet.

“You McKees have something to drink,” he said. “Get some more ice and mineral water, Myrtle, before everybody goes to sleep.”

“I told that boy about the ice.” Myrtle raised her eyebrows in despair at the shiftlessness of the lower orders. “These people! You have to keep after them all the time.”

She looked at me and laughed pointlessly. Then she flounced over to the dog, kissed it with ecstasy, and swept into the kitchen, implying that a dozen chefs awaited her orders there.

“I’ve done some nice things out on Long Island,” asserted Mr. McKee.

Tom looked at him blankly.

“Two of them we have framed downstairs.”

“Two what?” demanded Tom.

“Two studies. One of them I call Montauk Point—The Gulls, and the other I call Montauk Point—The Sea.”

Last night at the Embassy Sir Dighton had said "If I want a fellow to hold my horse, I have only to put up my hand." But the religious question is far more serious than the economic, Sir Dighton had said, which she thought extraordinarily interesting, from a man like Sir Dighton. Mrs Dalloway

It is a big, airy room, the whole floor nearly, with windows that look all ways, and air and sunshine galore. It was nursery first and then playground and gymnasium, I should judge; for the windows are barred for little children, and there are rings and things in the walls.

The paint and paper look as if a boys’ school had used it. It is stripped off—the paper—in great patches all around the head of my bed, about as far as I can reach, and in a great place on the other side of the room low down. I never saw a worse paper in my life.

One of those sprawling flamboyant patterns committing every artistic sin.

It is dull enough to confuse the eye in following, pronounced enough to constantly irritate, and provoke study, and when you follow the lame, uncertain curves for a little distance they suddenly commit suicide—plunge off at outrageous angles, destroy themselves in unheard-of contradictions.

The color is repellant, almost revolting; a smouldering, unclean yellow, strangely faded by the slow-turning sunlight.

It is a dull yet lurid orange in some places, a sickly sulphur tint in others.

No wonder the children hated it! I should hate it myself if I had to live in this room long.

There comes John, and I must put this away,—he hates to have me write a word.

We have been here two weeks, and I haven’t felt like writing before, since that first day.

I am sitting by the window now, up in this atrocious nursery, and there is nothing to hinder my writing as much as I please, save lack of strength.

John is away all day, and even some nights when his cases are serious.

I am glad my case is not serious!

But these nervous troubles are dreadfully depressing.

John does not know how much I really suffer. He knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him.

Of course it is only nervousness. It does weigh on me so not to do my duty in any way!

I meant to be such a help to John, such a real rest and comfort, and here I am a comparative burden already!

Nobody would believe what an effort it is to do what little I am able—to dress and entertain, and order things.

It is fortunate Mary is so good with the baby. Such a dear baby!

### Who speaks, and who perceives?

A **narrator** is the textual voice that tells a fictional narrative. That voice shouldn’t automatically be identified with the author. Even if a narrator resembles the writer, they remain a constructed feature of the work. **Narrative voice** is the manner of telling produced through the narrator’s person, language, attitudes and degree of participation in the story.

**Focalisation** organizes narrative information through a particular position of perception or consciousness. The distinction is straightforward: voice concerns who tells, while focalisation concerns who sees, knows or experiences. A single narrator may shift between several focalising characters. A first-person narrator, meanwhile, may recount events perceived by an earlier version of the self.

A **first-person narrator** refers to the narrating self as “I” or “we” and participates in, witnesses or retrospectively reconstructs the events. First person gives direct access to one account—not to objective truth. Ask what the speaker could reasonably know, what has been forgotten or suppressed, and how hindsight reshapes the past.

A **third-person narrator** ordinarily refers to characters as “he”, “she”, “they” or by name instead of speaking as a participant. Third person doesn’t automatically suggest breadth or neutrality. The narration may stay closely attached to one consciousness, shift between several characters, or observe largely from outside.

**Omniscient narration** is a mode in which the narrator can disclose information beyond the knowledge of any single character. This apparent freedom may allow movement across places, times and minds, along with commentary on the characters. Yet omniscience still has practical limits: the text selects what to reveal, withhold and emphasize.

### Access to consciousness

**Free indirect discourse** is a mode of third-person narration that presents a character’s thoughts or idiom without direct quotation or a reporting clause. The grammar may stay in the third person and past tense, while the vocabulary, judgments or exclamations belong to the character. The result is a productive ambiguity: narrator and character seem to speak at once.

An **unreliable narrator** gives the reader substantial reason to doubt the accuracy, completeness or judgment of their account. Contradictions, factual gaps, evasions, implausible certainty, limited self-knowledge or discrepancies between the narrator’s claims and the scene presented may act as signals. Unreliability must be demonstrated through patterns; it isn’t a label to apply simply because a narrator is biased. Every narrator selects, but not every narrator is meaningfully unreliable.

**Narrative distance** is the degree of apparent closeness between the narration and a character’s immediate experience. Detailed sensations, fragmented syntax and character-coloured diction can reduce that distance. Summary, abstraction or retrospective commentary can increase it. Shifts in distance often guide sympathy: closeness may create intimacy or expose self-deception, whereas distance may produce judgment, irony or emotional numbness.

When analysing a passage, follow the changes instead of merely naming the person of narration. A shift from detached description into a character’s idiom—or from confident assertion to hesitant qualification—usually matters more than the bare statement “this is third person.”

### How prose constructs a person

**Characterisation** is the set of textual methods a literary work uses to construct a character and shape the reader’s understanding of them. A character isn’t simply a person waiting inside the story. Instead, the reader builds an impression from selected evidence.

**Direct characterisation** occurs when the narrator or another character explicitly states a quality, motive or judgment. The statement may be authoritative, partial or ironic. Ask who provides the description, then check whether the surrounding evidence supports it.

**Indirect characterisation** requires the reader to infer qualities from actions, speech, thoughts, appearance, relationships, setting or other characters’ responses. Repeated actions or verbal habits usually provide stronger evidence than an isolated detail. Inconsistency, though, may reveal inner conflict.

### Speech and silence

Dialogue builds character through diction, syntax, register and rhythm. Forms of address, interruptions and avoidance matter too. What someone refuses to answer may reveal as much as what they say. Look for differences between public and private speech, as well as gaps between a character’s words and the narrator’s description of their delivery. A courteous sentence paired with clenched gestures, for instance, creates tension between social performance and felt emotion.

Conversation also distributes power. One speaker might ask all the questions, control the topic, interrupt or issue imperatives. They may force someone else into brief replies. These formal patterns help explain a relationship without reducing the analysis to plot summary.

**Interiority** is the representation of a character’s inward thoughts, sensations, memories or emotions. A text may present it through direct thought, interior monologue, free indirect discourse or narration closely focalised through the character. Access to interiority can create sympathy, but it may also expose prejudice, rationalization or self-division.

### How the reader is invited to judge

Judgment usually develops through the relationship between several cues:

- what the narrator claims about the character
- what the character says and does
- how other characters react
- which motives or memories are disclosed
- which consequences the narrative emphasizes
- whether irony creates distance from the character’s own account.

Use precise wording. A text can invite, complicate or resist a judgment; it doesn’t mechanically force every reader to respond identically. Convincing analysis explains the textual invitation and any tension within it.

### Story order and telling order

**Narrative structure** is the arrangement of events, perspectives and units of narration into a meaningful sequence. First, separate the order of events in the fictional world from the order in which the narrator reveals them. Any difference between these orders is an authorial choice, not simply an inconvenience to untangle and then forget.

**Analepsis** is a narrative movement from the present point of the telling to an earlier event. It may provide withheld context or revise an initial judgment. It can also connect a present stimulus with memory, or show how the past still governs the present. Ask why this earlier event appears at that precise moment and who controls the version being told.

A passage may anticipate later possibilities through prediction or foreboding. A retrospective narrator might also know the consequences of events. Even if no complete future event is narrated, this anticipation can create suspense, fatalism or dramatic irony.

### Pace, scene and summary

**Narrative pacing** is the manipulation of how much textual space and attention a span of story time receives. Dialogue and sensory detail often slow the telling into a scene, as does moment-by-moment action. Summary compresses repeated or extended events, while ellipsis leaves out a period altogether. A pause can suspend the action for description or reflection.

Pace creates emphasis. When several paragraphs focus on a single gesture, that instant may seem psychologically or symbolically weighty. Compressing years into one sentence can suggest emotional detachment, routine or loss. State the relationship clearly: identify the technique, show the change in speed, then explain the resulting emphasis or reader experience.

### Beginnings, endings and turns

The point at which an extract begins shapes what the reader initially lacks. It might open in the middle of action or after an unexplained rupture. Alternatively, it may begin with an apparently stable routine or at a moment of arrival. The ending might resolve an immediate tension, interrupt the action, return to an earlier image or leave a recognition incomplete.

Treat these boundaries as deliberate structural choices. Consider the expectation created by the opening, then ask what the final sentence confirms, unsettles or transforms. Within the passage, turning points may emerge through shifts in location, time or speaker. Changes in focalisation, pace, syntax or emotional pressure can serve the same purpose. A paragraph break often makes a turn visible, but you still need to explain what changes across it.

### More than backdrop

**Setting** is the constructed time, place and social environment in which a narrative takes place. It covers the physical surroundings, historical conditions, cultural expectations, institutions, weather and atmosphere. Stating that a scene occurs in a room gives its location. Analysis goes further by examining which details the writer selects and how the characters inhabit that space.

A setting can do several jobs at the same time. It may:

- establish material or social conditions
- limit or enable a character’s movement
- embody hierarchy, exclusion or belonging
- heighten conflict through exposure, confinement or surveillance
- reflect, contrast with or complicate a character’s state of mind
- carry memories and historical pressures
- create symbolic patterns while remaining a credible place.

Spatial relations often reveal a great deal. Thresholds separate inside from outside, while windows allow sight without participation. Borders and locked spaces control access. Elevated positions may suggest command or isolation. None of these meanings is automatic; context determines them. A house doesn’t always represent security, darkness doesn’t always signify evil, and weather doesn’t automatically mirror emotion.

### Character, perspective and setting

Narrative perspective filters description. A crowded street might feel like freedom to one character and a threat to another. The setting remains the same, but focalisation alters its significance. Look closely at evaluative adjectives, sensory selection and comparisons. They reveal the environment as well as the consciousness perceiving it.

Setting can also shape social and cultural identity. Details of labour, housing, ritual, language, dress or public behaviour may place characters within systems of class, gender, nationality, race or belief. Analyse how the text represents these systems instead of treating contextual information as background that can be detached from the passage.

One useful analytical sequence begins with a concrete detail. Work out how the prose frames it, then link that framing to character, conflict or a wider implication. This keeps symbolic interpretations grounded in the passage.

### Diction and register

**Diction** means the words a writer selects, together with their associated meanings, connotations and levels of formality. Look for patterns in those choices: concrete or abstract nouns, forceful or tentative verbs, evaluative adjectives, euphemism, repetition, technical vocabulary or words from a shared semantic field. One unusual word may be significant. A pattern, though, supports a stronger conclusion.

**Register** refers, in this context, to the candidate's use of vocabulary, tone, sentence structure and terminology suited to the analysis. Shifts in formality, vocabulary and sentence construction within the prose passage may also reveal situation, relationship or social position. Keep the two uses separate. The passage has stylistic registers; your analytical register should be precise and appropriately formal.

**Rhythm** is the pattern of movement and emphasis created by syntax, punctuation, sound and sentence length. Short independent clauses may quicken the action or produce blunt finality. Extended sentences can accumulate perceptions, delay completion or recreate a mind working through uncertainty. None of these effects is fixed—the surrounding context decides.

### Imagery and syntax

**Imagery** is language that represents sensory experience or forms a figurative picture. Follow what an image leads the reader to imagine, then consider how it develops an attitude, connection or pattern. When several images draw on enclosure, decay or performance, their recurrence may organize the passage’s larger concerns.

**Syntax** is the arrangement of words, phrases and clauses within sentences. Coordination may set perceptions alongside one another, while subordination can establish hierarchy, cause or qualification. Fragments might convey interruption or deliberate compression. Notice sentence openings and endings too, since these positions control emphasis.

Name a device only if the term helps explain the writing. “The author uses short sentences” is still descriptive. A stronger observation pinpoints where the rhythm changes, explains what the new rhythm emphasizes and shows how the shift affects the representation of a character or event.

### The paragraph as a unit of thought

A prose paragraph is more than a block of lines. It may contain one phase of perception, a stage in an action or a particular narrative distance. Find the **pivot**: the point where the paragraph changes direction through a contrast, disclosure, qualification, image, temporal movement or syntactic break.

Watch transitional words, repeated motifs, shifts in pronoun or tense, and the paragraph’s final sentence. A paragraph may open with confident external description, then finish inside an anxious consciousness. That turn is structural, grammatical and psychological at once.

### From response to interpretation

**Close analysis** is an interpretive method that focuses on precise textual details, then explains how they work together to create meaning and effect. It links small choices—a pronoun, pause or image, for instance—to larger patterns without claiming that each detail has one fixed meaning.

Literary meaning emerges from the interaction between writerly choices, the text and its readers. Writers use language creatively while working within particular contexts and literary traditions. Readers, meanwhile, bring their own knowledge, values and assumptions. The text’s actual words and structures place limits on interpretation, though readers may notice different implications. Meaning is constructed and negotiated, not simply extracted.

Study therefore needs to move beyond a private reaction such as “I disliked the narrator.” A reader should identify the textual patterns that prompted the response, consider plausible alternatives, then refine the interpretation through discussion with a wider community of readers. Critical perspectives may uncover assumptions missed in an individual reading.

### Context, culture and literary tradition

The writer’s context shapes production, while readers’ contexts affect reception. Cultural beliefs influence what appears normal, transgressive, comic or tragic. Literary traditions also create expectations about narrators, plots and endings. Context should clarify textual choices rather than replace close analysis of them.

Literature may represent the world, but it also constructs versions of that world through selection, naming and perspective. This applies equally to social and cultural identities. Prose fiction can reinforce familiar categories, expose their effects or imagine how they might be transformed. Its language carries aesthetic force as well as informational content.

Literary creation and response can also be performative and transformative. Through voice and form, a work can make a viewpoint present. Reading and interpretation may then change how individuals or communities understand an experience. Creativity belongs to both writer and reader, although readers must still support their interpretations with textual evidence.

### Building a reasoned interpretation

A sound analytical paragraph normally carries out four connected actions:

1. advances an interpretive claim relevant to the passage’s central concern
2. selects a precise textual reference
3. analyses how the relevant choice works
4. evaluates how that choice shapes meaning, response or a larger implication.

References can take the form of brief quotations or exact descriptions of structure. Their analytical value matters more than their length. Strong discussion often connects two details—for example, a narrator’s confident assertion and a later contradiction—because that relationship can support an inference about reliability.

### The task

**Guided analysis** refers to “an exploration of the passage supported by a guiding question, which asks students to consider a technical or formal aspect of the passage.” That question gives students a productive way into the passage; it isn’t a checklist of features to find.

At standard level, Paper 1 lasts 1 hour 15 minutes and contributes 35% of the final result. Students receive two previously unseen literary passages from different literary forms and analyse one of them. The passage may be a complete work or an extract from a longer one. Wherever possible, it won’t be taken from an author on the *Prescribed reading list* or from a work likely to have been studied in class.

One guiding question accompanies each passage, focusing on a central formal or technical feature. Students don’t have to answer that exact question: they may choose another significant technical or formal point of entry. Even then, the response needs a clear analytical focus. Moving away from the question only helps if the alternative lens explains the passage more effectively.

### Reading prose fiction as a whole passage

Start with the literal situation. Who is present? What happens, where and when does the scene take place, and what changes? Next, identify the controlling pattern. In prose fiction, this could involve a change in focalisation, a revision of judgment, an interruption by memory, a shift in pace or a contrast between speech and interiority.

Build the analysis around developments or relationships rather than producing a catalogue of devices. If a passage moves from public composure to private panic, for example, the response might follow the stages of that movement. Voice, syntax, setting and imagery can then be considered together at each stage.

### The four assessment criteria

Paper 1 is marked out of 20, with five marks available under each criterion.

Across Criteria A and B, performance moves broadly from limited literal understanding and description, through generally appropriate interpretation and analysis, to perceptive understanding and convincing evaluation. For Criterion C, higher achievement depends on genuinely coherent organization and a sustained focus. Increasing control under Criterion D brings greater clarity, accuracy, variety and precision, along with an effective analytical register. A mark of zero applies when the response does not reach the standard described by the criterion’s positive levels.

In practice, interpretation needs evidence, just as technique needs discussion of effect. Perceptive ideas without textual support won’t reach the strongest levels. Neither will naming numerous features without evaluating what they contribute.

### Prose fiction within the literature course

The literature course explores how literature has taken shape across different cultures and historical periods. Through close analysis, students examine the creativity of writers and readers, the ways they interact with context and literary tradition, and how language produces meaning and effect. They also consider the performative or transformative possibilities of literary creation and response.

Prose fiction forms one part of this broader study. Course selections should balance literary form with period and place while representing varied forms of human and artistic experience. The *Prescribed reading list* includes authors who write in a wide range of languages. Its suggested author groups offer starting points; they are not compulsory packages.

At standard level, students study at least seven works across the three areas of exploration. At least three must have been written originally in the course language by authors on the *Prescribed reading list*. At least two must be translations into the course language, written in another language by listed authors. Students may choose two further works freely, either from the list or elsewhere, and these may be translated.

Students study at least two works in each area of exploration. Across the standard-level course, their selections cover at least three literary forms, three periods and three countries or regions, spread across at least two continents. Some text types may count as literary or non-literary depending on the particular text. These include autobiography, biography, memoir, diaries, essays, letters, speeches, parody and travel writing. A text may be treated as literary when it is written by a recognized literary writer, appears on the prescribed list or has a clear aesthetic purpose.

The area of exploration focused on readers, writers and texts gives close attention to formal choices and to the reader’s role in generating meaning. Discussing a work with other readers reveals how interpretation is constructed and negotiated.

### Using the learner portfolio

The **learner portfolio** is an ongoing record where a student documents reading, inquiry, practice and reflection throughout the course. It isn’t specifically assessed, but it offers a practical space for developing Paper 1 skills.

During prose-fiction work, students can use the portfolio to capture an initial response to an unfamiliar passage before polishing it. They might formulate possible guiding questions and test how each one changes the reading, identify weaker analytical skills and track their development, or keep an accurate record of the literary forms practised so that preparation covers every form that may appear. Comparing later analyses with the earliest attempt makes progress in interpretation, organization and language visible.

External assessment contributes 70% of the final result at standard level. The shared external components use four assessment criteria that reflect the course assessment objectives. For shared components, the descriptors are the same at standard and higher level.

### Work requirements

Higher-level students study at least ten works during the course. At least four must have been written originally in the course language by authors on the *Prescribed reading list*. At least three others must be works by authors on that list, translated into the course language from another language. Students may choose the remaining three freely, either from the list or elsewhere; these works may also be translations.

This broader range allows students to make sustained comparisons across forms, places, periods, languages and traditions. In prose fiction, it should build a deeper awareness that familiar narrative conventions are not universal but shaped by history and culture. These include the authority given to a narrator and the handling of chronological order.

External assessment accounts for 80% of the final higher-level result. When higher level and standard level share an assessment component, the same four criteria and descriptors apply.

English A (Lit)

English A: Literature focuses on the study and analysis of literary works from various cultures, periods, and genres. Students engage with 13 works at higher level or 9 works at standard level, developing their ability to interpret texts critically and appreciate the artistry of literature.
