### Speech does things

**Dialogue is an exchange of speech between two or more dramatic voices through which relationships, conflicts and events are enacted.** On stage, speech rarely just carries information. A demand puts someone under pressure. An apology asks for forgiveness, while a joke might deflect danger. Even a question can work as an accusation while pretending merely to inquire.

Begin the analysis with a verb: the speaker threatens, evades, bargains, provokes, reassures or performs submission. This says more than claiming that a line “shows anger”. It pinpoints what the character wants the words to make happen.

**A speech act is an utterance that performs a social action through being spoken.** Whether it succeeds depends on circumstance and power. An order carries a different weight when it comes from a ruler, a prisoner or someone whose authority is collapsing.

### Intention, effect and subtext

Keep three separate questions in mind, since the answers may not match:

- the speaker’s apparent intention
- the immediate effect on the listener
- the wider effect on the audience

A character might try to reassure someone on stage yet leave the audience deeply suspicious. That gap gives the line its dramatic force.

**Subtext is the implied meaning or motive operating beneath a character’s explicit words.** This doesn’t give the reader permission to invent a secret story. Subtext must come from textual evidence: hesitation, contradiction, repetition, evasive answers, changes of subject and accompanying stage directions.

Punctuation helps us hear the dialogue on the page. Dashes may signal interruption or broken thought; ellipses can stretch out reluctance. Short questions may apply pressure. An unfinished sentence can suggest that another character—or the speaker’s own fear—stops the thought from being completed. Read the passage as speech unfolding in time, not prose placed beneath character names.

### Dialogue and characterization

Drama builds characterization through patterns of conduct rather than a narrator’s settled explanation. Look at what a character says and what they repeatedly avoid saying. Notice how others respond, and ask whether the character’s actions support their professed values. When speech and conduct contradict each other, the gap may point to hypocrisy, self-deception or a painful inability to act on sincere beliefs.

A strong interpretation links technique directly to consequence. For example, an evasive answer delays disclosure, shifts power to the questioner and encourages the audience to distrust the speaker. That full chain—choice, action, effect—is the heart of dramatic analysis.

### Who holds the floor?

**Speech distribution is the pattern by which a dramatist allocates speaking time, turns and silence among characters.** It makes power audible. A character who gives an extended speech may control the encounter. Length, though, doesn’t guarantee authority. An anxious monologue can reveal a loss of control, while one well-timed reply may end an argument.

Map the scene before interpreting individual quotations. Look at who introduces topics and who answers instead of asking. Notice who changes the subject, then track whose words prompt the next physical action. This pattern often makes the scene’s hierarchy clearer.

### Turns, interruptions and overlap

**Turn-taking is the organization of successive contributions to a conversation.** Regular alternation may suggest cooperation or ritual restraint. Rapid exchanges can build intimacy or sharpen comic timing. They may instead show competition or escalating conflict, depending on what the speakers do with their turns.

**Interruption is a conversational act in which one speaker begins before another has willingly yielded the floor.** It may assert dominance or prevent disclosure; sometimes, it exposes panic. Check whether the interruption works. A character who repeatedly cuts in but fails to redirect the scene may sound less powerful than intended.

Shared or overlapping speech can briefly blur individual voices. It may signal agreement, rehearsed public behaviour or a struggle to be heard. In contrast, sharply unequal line lengths set verbal abundance against restraint, prompting the audience to compare the characters’ modes of power.

### Silence is still staged

**Dramatic silence is an authored absence of speech whose placement creates meaning in performance.** A pause or refusal to answer can communicate resistance, shame or calculation. So can a prolonged mute presence, which may also convey exclusion. Position and response shape the meaning: silence after an accusation works differently from silence before a confession.

Don’t automatically treat the silent character as powerless. Silence may push others to fill the gap and reveal more than they intended. It can also make them confront an answer they cannot obtain. Yet imposed silence may show that a character has no permission to speak. Ask who chooses the silence and who interprets it. Then consider who benefits.

Absence matters too. A character who is discussed but kept offstage may dominate the conversation without receiving a speaking turn. Drama distributes attention as well as words.

### More than scene-setting

**A stage direction is an instruction or descriptive cue in a dramatic text that guides performance or establishes theatrically significant action and conditions.** Directions do more than indicate where the furniture goes. They can qualify dialogue or expose a contradiction, making a physical claim about status or relationships.

A character may declare affection while moving away. In that moment, the distance argues with the words. If a supposedly helpless character handles the object everyone else fears, the prop changes the apparent hierarchy. Read the verbal and physical channels as interacting parts of the same design.

### Movement and proxemics

**Blocking is the planned positioning and movement of performers in a theatrical space.** Entrances and crossings can direct attention, as can stillness or a change of level. A seated figure who keeps standing characters waiting may control the scene without moving at all.

**Proxemics is the use of physical distance and spatial relationship to communicate social or emotional meaning.** Nearness may suggest intimacy, threat or enforced confinement. Separation might indicate estrangement, ceremony or safety. Don’t give distance a fixed meaning without considering the dramatic circumstances.

### Props and lighting

**A prop is a movable object used by performers as part of the dramatic action.** Notice who possesses it, who is allowed to touch it and whether its function changes. An everyday object might become evidence or a bargaining tool. It could also serve as a visible reminder of an absent person. Repeated handling may carry an argument that the dialogue never states directly.

**Dramatic lighting is the designed use of illumination, colour, direction and darkness to shape visibility and atmosphere in performance.** Lighting controls what can be seen and, therefore, what can be known. A change may isolate one figure, reveal a previously obscured area or make a public space suddenly feel private.

Stage directions regulate pace as well. A delayed movement can stretch anticipation, while simultaneous actions may divide attention. A sudden blackout can deny both the characters and the audience the comfort of resolution.

### Reading performance possibilities

A play text allows for performance choices, but interpretation must stay anchored in its cues. Separate what the text requires from what it strongly encourages, then consider what a production could plausibly add. This keeps performance open without turning analysis into unsupported directing.

When discussing a direction, follow a clear sequence. Identify the physical choice first. Next, explain how it modifies the spoken exchange, then evaluate its effect on the audience’s understanding of the conflict.

### The knowledge gap

**Dramatic irony is a form of irony in which the audience possesses relevant knowledge that one or more characters lack, causing the characters’ words or actions to carry an additional meaning.** It isn’t enough to say that the audience “knows more”. Analysis needs to pinpoint the exact information, identify which character doesn’t have it, and explain how this gap changes the significance of a speech or action.

When the audience knows that a sincere promise cannot be kept, it may sound ominous. A confident plan can become comic, painful or frightening if it rests on a false premise. Genre and stakes shape the tonal effect, as does the audience’s relationship with the mistaken character.

### How the gap is created

A dramatist may divide knowledge through an earlier scene or an overheard conversation. Other methods include a concealed identity, a private confidence or information revealed while another character is absent. **An aside is a brief utterance conventionally understood as unheard by some or all of the other characters.** **A soliloquy is an extended speech in which a character voices thoughts without addressing another character in the immediate dramatic exchange.** Both forms can give the audience privileged access. However, neither guarantees that the speaker is truthful or self-aware.

Watch how the knowledge pattern shifts. The central effect might occur when one character starts to suspect the truth. It may instead come when another wrongly believes the secret remains safe, or when the audience discovers that its own earlier interpretation was incomplete.

### Audience position and ethical effect

Privileged knowledge can make the audience complicit: spectators wait for the consequences while a character remains exposed. It may also create discomfort. The audience recognizes the danger but cannot intervene. Dramatic irony therefore affects the audience’s ethical relationship with a character as well as its intellectual one.

Not every contradiction is dramatic irony. **Verbal irony is an utterance in which the intended meaning differs significantly from the literal wording.** **Situational irony is an outcome that sharply conflicts with a reasonable expectation.** Dramatic irony depends specifically on unequal knowledge within the theatrical situation, although these forms can overlap.

### A scene as a changing unit

**A dramatic scene is a bounded unit of action in which a particular configuration of characters, place and conflict develops.** Even a brief extract has its own shape. Pin down the situation at the start, then track what changes and what remains unresolved.

Entrances and exits shape the scene. An entrance might interrupt a private moment, bring in authority or turn recollection into confrontation. An exit can release pressure, avoid judgment or force those left behind to reinterpret what has happened. Watch who controls the movement: a character who chooses to leave is in a different position from one who is dismissed.

### The turn

**A dramatic turn is a point at which the direction, balance of power, emotional temperature or audience understanding of a scene changes significantly.** A revelation can cause the shift. So can a refusal, pause, physical movement or subtle change in address. The turn isn’t always the loudest moment.

First, establish the scene’s dominant pattern. At the turn, pinpoint the choice that breaks it. Then follow the effects on pace, language, movement and power. The analysis now develops as an argument rather than becoming a catalogue of devices.

Several smaller shifts may surround one decisive reversal. A character might gain verbal ground, for instance, while losing moral credibility. Power rarely works as a single quantity. Specify whether authority, knowledge, emotional control or audience sympathy has changed.

### Endings and the curtain

**A curtain is a scene-ending device that closes or suspends the visible action at a strategically chosen moment.** The term still applies to the structural close when a modern production has no physical curtain. Some scenes end with closure; others stop on an unanswered question, suspended gesture, departure, tableau or blackout.

Because nothing immediately replaces it, the final image or line carries particular emphasis. Ask what the audience is led to anticipate during the break or transition. An unresolved ending may hand the work of interpretation to the audience. A neat ending, though, can feel unstable when the scene has revealed problems that the characters refuse to acknowledge.

### Whole-scene pattern

Structure arranges dramatic pressure over time. A scene might move through escalation and release, concealment and disclosure, approach and withdrawal, or repeated attempts that produce altered outcomes. Trace the sequence in the passage before naming its pattern. The label matters less than showing how that sequence shapes expectation and interpretation.

### Register within the play

**Dramatic register is a variety of language selected for a particular social situation, relationship or purpose.** It covers levels of formality, vocabulary, syntax, forms of address and culturally specific conventions of politeness. Register depends on relationships. A character may speak one way to a superior and quite differently to a rival, stranger or intimate.

Changes in register can reveal accommodation, disguise, mockery or a shift in power. Formal courtesy might genuinely restrain conflict. Equally, it can sharpen hostility by placing aggression under ceremonial control. Analyse what changes and what the change does; don’t treat “formal” and “informal” as complete interpretations.

### Verse and prose

**Dramatic verse is speech arranged through deliberate rhythmic or line-based patterning rather than solely through ordinary grammatical sentences.** **Dramatic prose is speech arranged primarily in sentences and paragraphs without a governing metrical line pattern.** Neither form is automatically elevated or natural. Verse can feel intimate and fractured, while prose may be highly ceremonial.

When examining verse, look at how line and syntax interact. **Enjambment is the continuation of a grammatical unit beyond the end of a poetic line.** It may drive the speech forward or strain against formal control. **An end-stopped line is a verse line that concludes with a grammatical pause.** Repeated end-stopping can produce deliberation, finality or rhetorical balance.

A regular rhythm may suggest confidence, ritual or self-command. Disruption, by contrast, can register pressure or divided thought. Take care: broken rhythm shows change, but it doesn’t diagnose a particular emotion. Local context decides whether the effect is hesitant, furious, ecstatic or strategically manipulative.

With prose, pay attention to sentence length, coordination, fragments, repetition and idiom. Prose has rhythm too. It can create conversational immediacy, comic expansiveness, bureaucratic control or blunt confrontation.

### Shifts between forms

Treat a move from verse to prose, or from prose to verse, as a dramatic event. Pinpoint the change, then ask what shifts alongside it: the addressee, status, topic, emotional control or degree of public performance. Such a transition may uncover a private voice, signal entry into ceremony or show that an established social script no longer holds.

### The analyst’s register

For the student’s own writing, the guide states: **Register refers, in this context, to the candidate's use of elements such as vocabulary, tone, sentence structure and terminology appropriate to the analysis.** The analysis should sound precise and literary, not inflated. Use technical terms when they clarify a choice, then explain the dramatic effect of that choice.

### Reading drama as literature and performance

A play is a literary form, yet its words create an event meant to take shape in space and time. Analysis therefore needs to link language to voice, movement, silence, objects and light, while also tracking the audience’s changing knowledge. Television and film screenplays belong to a different textual category in the guide. Their camera and editing conventions shouldn’t automatically be applied to a stage play.

The course treats literature as a powerful form of writing, produced and received across cultures and historical periods. In drama, attention falls on the creativity of writers and audiences, as well as literary tradition and context. It also involves examining how language produces meaning and how staging and response can have performative or transformative possibilities. Plays represent the world, but they also help construct social and cultural identities.

Context should illuminate a textual choice rather than stand in for analysis. A convention involving rank, gender, family or public ceremony becomes relevant when the passage activates it—for example, through a form of address, a spatial arrangement or a restriction on speech. Audiences may negotiate its significance in different ways because cultural beliefs and communities of readers or spectators shape interpretation.

### The Paper 1 task

The guide defines **guided analysis** as “an exploration of the passage supported by a guiding question, which asks students to consider a technical or formal aspect of the passage.” That question offers a productive lens, but students don’t have to use it. They may choose another technical or formal point of entry if it provides a clear focus.

For SL Paper 1, students receive two unseen literary passages from different literary forms. They analyse one passage in 1 hour 15 minutes. The task is worth 35% of the SL course and carries 20 marks. The passage may be a complete work or an extract from a longer one. As far as practicable, it won’t be taken from a familiar classroom work or from an author on the prescribed list. Drama is one of the literary forms that may be selected.

On a first reading, establish the literal situation: who is present, what each character wants, what has happened and what changes. A second reading can trace a central dramatic relationship, perhaps between speech and movement, knowledge and ignorance, or verbal control and silence. The guiding question should shape this investigation, not become a phrase repeated mechanically in every paragraph.

### Building an interpretation

**Interpretation is a reasoned account of a text’s meaning that connects details with larger implications.** Start with an arguable view of how the scene works. Develop that view by following patterns and changes rather than compiling an inventory of terminology.

Evidence in drama may include short quotations, stage directions, punctuation and line arrangement. Entrances, exits and the passage’s structural position also matter. Select references that reveal how the scene develops. Strong analysis moves from a particular choice to its immediate dramatic effect, then considers a larger implication involving relationships, values, identity or the audience’s position.

Performance allows for alternatives, which makes evaluation necessary. When the text genuinely supports more than one staging or motivation, acknowledge the ambiguity and explain why one reading remains especially persuasive. This reflects the course’s view that readers help generate meaning while the text still constrains them. Meaning is constructed and negotiated, not simply invented.

### What the criteria reward

Paper 1 uses four criteria of equal weight:

- **Criterion A: Understanding and interpretation** rewards an accurate grasp of the literal situation, reasoned conclusions about implications and well-chosen textual support.
- **Criterion B: Analysis and evaluation** rewards convincing explanations of how textual features and authorial choices shape meaning. Description by itself is not enough.
- **Criterion C: Focus and organization** rewards a coherent line of argument, with paragraphs that develop the central interpretation rather than repeat it.
- **Criterion D: Language** rewards clarity, precision, variety and accuracy, using a register appropriate for literary analysis.

Organize the response around interpretive claims. A paragraph might follow one stage of the scene, track a developing relationship or examine how techniques interact. This creates structural progression without losing sight of the guiding focus.

Where an assessment component is shared, the same criteria apply to SL and HL. External assessment contributes 70% of the final result at SL and 80% at HL. The supplied guide extract gives the Paper 1 format and weighting stated above for SL.

### Using the learner portfolio

The learner portfolio isn’t directly assessed, but it supports preparation. For drama, students can use it to keep first responses to unfamiliar passages, self-created guiding questions and successive analyses that use those questions as lenses. It should also record which Paper 1 literary forms have been practised and identify weaker skills. Comparing later work with the earliest attempt makes progress visible.

### Drama within the course requirements

The course balances literary form, period and place. SL students study at least seven works. At least three must have been originally written in the course language by prescribed-list authors, while at least two must be translated from another language and written by prescribed-list authors. Two works may be chosen freely. Students study at least two works in each area of exploration. Across the selection, they must cover three literary forms, three periods and three countries or regions spanning at least two continents.

HL students study at least ten works. At least four must have been originally written in the course language by prescribed-list authors, and at least three must be translated from another language and written by prescribed-list authors. Three works may be chosen freely. A play can help meet this balance, but studying one play doesn’t remove the requirement to encounter literature across forms, cultures and historical settings.
