Are you considering choosing IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) for the IB program but need to know if it will be a good fit? If you’re looking at different options and wondering about the challenges IB ESS might pose, this guide will provide you with some information so that you can make a well-informed decision.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h2 style="text-align:center;">How Hard is IB ESS?</h2>&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">&nbsp;</h3><h3 style="text-align:justify;">Difficulty</h3>&nbsp;Official IB statistics show that IB ESS is a difficult subject, with only 4.8% of students achieving a grade of 7, according to data from the May 2024 exam session. ESS used to be offered only at the Standard Level (SL), however from May 2026 it will be offered at the Higher Level (HL) as well. The low percentage of 7s achieved in IB ESS could be because students taking this subject generally are not interested in pursuing science beyond IB, so they only take IB ESS to fulfil the IB science requirement as it is much easier than IB Biology, Chemistry, or Physics, for example.&nbsp;Most students admit that IB ESS is a mildly challenging IB subject. It requires a significant amount of memorization regarding environmental theory. However, concepts are simple and easier to understand than in other more complex IB subjects such as IB Geography, which also has a significant environmental focus.&nbsp;&nbsp;<h3 style="text-align:justify;">What are some of the challenges of IB ESS?</h3>&nbsp;<ul><li>Students must understand natural processes (e.g., climate change, tectonic activity) and human activities (e.g., urbanization, migration), as well as the interconnectedness between humans and nature.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li>ESS is interdisciplinary and combines environmental science, ecology, and geography with ethical and social perspectives, requiring students to think scientifically and critically.&nbsp;</li><li>Students must memorize how food chains, energy flows, and biogeochemical cycles work, which requires a good understanding of the functioning of an ecosystem.&nbsp;&nbsp;</li><li data-start="318" data-end="512">Students must use the systems thinking approach and analyze the situation as a whole as well as look at individual components. However, students should be mindful that ESS is currently only offered at SL and is hence not accepted by many universities as an entry requirement to competitive programs. Students wishing to take the above majors might be better off choosing a similar subject such as IB Geography.
