Correct

Criterion A: The choice of the topic is justified through apparent personal significance, interest, or curiosity

Comment: The student's choice to investigate how the pressure of a soccer ball affects its bounce height is clearly justified by their experience and interest in playing soccer - a personal connection to the topic is clearly presented

Incorrect

Criterion A: Evidence of personal input and initiative in the designing, implementation, or presentation of the investigation is present

Comment: The student is advised to include a description of the preliminary trial conducted before the actual experiment and describe any methodological issues found during the trial. It is highly advised that students include this description in their work as some strict examiners might require it to be present. Hence, the point for this subcriterion was subtracted

Incorrect

Criterion A: Evidence of personal input and initiative in the designing, implementation, or presentation of the investigation is present

Comment: The student is advised to include a self-made diagram and an annotated photograph of the experimental setup. If possible, it is advised to use diagrams created by the student, in contrast to pictures acquired from the internet or a textbook. Otherwise, the external source of the figure should be referenced. If the diagram is created by the student, it should be stated below the figure

Correct

Criterion B: A focused and detailed topic of the investigation is identified

Comment: The topic of the investigation is correctly stated on the title page

Incorrect

Criterion B: A relevant and fully focused research question is clearly described

Comment: The student has successfully identified the variables, however, to make the research question more focused, the student is advised to note the range of values of the independent variable (pressure) and state the units of the independent and dependent variables. Moreover, the research question could still be improved by changing the question tag "how" to "to what extent" to allow the student to pursue research that is more detailed and has a wider range. Then, the answer to the research question will not impose a short and limited answer such as "affects greatly", "or increases". Instead, a more detailed analysis with discussion can be pursued

Incorrect

Criterion B: The physics is explained well enough for the reader to fully and easily understand it without the need of rereading

Comment: The student makes some attempts to describe the theory behind their experiment while describing the aim and the hypothesis of the investigation. However, the explanation of the physics in the investigation lacks clarity and depth. The essay fails to provide a thorough explanation of the physics concepts involved in the study. A more comprehensive explanation of these concepts is necessary to meet the criterion. To improve, the student should include a separate section "Background Information" after the Introduction where all concepts associated with the topic (the definitions of the variables, theories, and equations used) would be described and referenced using in-text citations or footnotes

Correct

Criterion B: The methodology of the investigation is focused on addressing the research question

Comment: The student correctly identifies the independent (pressure) and dependent (bounce height) variables to pursue the research question

Correct

Criterion B: The methodology of the investigation is focused on addressing the research question

Comment: The student correctly identifies the independent (pressure) and dependent (bounce height) variables to pursue the research question

Incorrect

Criterion B: The methodology of the investigation includes steps to assure the relevance and reliability of the collected data

Comment: The student correctly lists variables that need to be maintained constant for the results to be valid, however, each of the variables should be provided with specific methods and reasons for its control (preferably in the form of a table)

Correct

Criterion B: The student shows full awareness of safety hazards that can arise during the procedure

Incorrect

Criterion B: The student shows full awareness of the ethical issues that are relevant to the procedure

Comment: No statement regarding ethical issues or their lack of is stated. If there are none according to the student, it should be clearly stated in the Risk Assessment section at the end of the methodology (e.g. discussion on whether the experiment may be harmful to other humans or animals)

Incorrect

Criterion B: The student shows full awareness of environmental issues that are relevant to the procedure

Comment: No statement regarding environmental issues or their lack of is stated. If there are none according to the student, it should be clearly stated in the Risk Assessment at the end of the methodology (e.g. discussion on whether the experiment may harm the environment in any way or whether any materials go to waste due to the experiment)
